True, but it also tells you that clubs prefer to take a player that they think can provide a particular role, rather than go into the draft and spend 2/3 years developing a kid taken as a late pick, and hoping he can perform the same role.

Nothing wrong with clubs getting role players.

You follow the wrong club if you eye-roll recruitment of a bit part player that may or may not be able to play at a higher level.

Roos has had us recruit 11 AFL experienced players in his short tenure. From the summer of 2007/8 to 2011/12 we only recruited Meesen and MacDonald from other clubs. Only Vince and Tyson were recruited as something more than 'role players.'

It is a reason for our great malaise post 2007. Having no top end talent doesn't send you off the cliff, having a lack of AFL standard players to fill a team does that.

I can't see Richmond being a premiership team with their current list-building strategy. They're finishing high enough that they aren't getting high draft picks, they're not trading in or signing any gun players, and the players that they have added struggle to have an impact at AFL level. I think they'll be competitive for a few more years until Riewoldt/Deledio/Maric start to drop off, but I would bet that they won't win a flag unless something radically changes with their list.

I feel bad for them, as I think their supporters deserve some success almost as much as we do. I also like Damien Hardwick as he's previously stuck up for us when the media have bashed us.

Fair, it may not be an indictment on their list building strategy, but it's an indictment on them as a club. They should be in a position now where they're viewed as a "destination club" that players like Treloar, Motlop and Bennell want to get to. I don't know what exactly it is that they need to do to get good players to want to play for them, whether it be offering them more money or longer contracts, but it's something they need to figure out quickly if they're ever going to contend for a premiership with their current core.

The way I see it, they're topping up with players that will enable them to be competitive without ever actually being a legitimate premiership threat. They're treading water and I'm quite certain that unless they can find a way to lure some gun players to top off their list, they'll be rebuilding before they're hoisting a cup.

Still hopeful we land Parella, but if Andre is gone by the time we get around to picking a ruckman (likely rookie draft) then Gorringe was an option I was hoping we'd have.

I did say compared to us and also noted will it make them actual contenders. Us vs Richmond vs being a flag contender are all poles apart.

Have you not seriously kept up with it all. Josh Mahoney has already said that they will NOT be targeting any DFA.

Couldn't hold his spot down back. Went forward and managed some junk time goals in different games. With the recruitment of Bugg and Melksham he wouldn't be best 22 down back and would only waste a spot as a forward. So it's a no.

When you go through the list of delistings I don't think there's anyone worth more than a rookie spot.

Which is why Mahoney has rightly said we will take the 4 picks to the National Draft.

I expect we will think about the best options come the rookie draft if there aren't any kids we like. A depth state league or delisted ruck or forward/ruck might be on the cards for the one live pick we have.

While i agree, i don't think it's through lack of trying so much,

they threw everything at Treloar and it didn't work out, tried for Trengove last year but it fell through,

I just think they're a mediocre team and people can see that, where we are already beating them and have a lot of improvement to go.
