WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - BEN KENNEDY

Featured Replies

Give me a spell. Over his career, Howe has never been close to getting dropped. Under Roos, he's been shuffled from one end of the ground to the other. Roos' mantra has been all about defence, and Howe has been played there to bolster it. Now Roos talks about becoming more attack minded, and we've lost a player that can make an impact up forward.

And what are you basing Melksham's instant success on? Lumumba had a far more impressive CV, and he hardly set the world on fire.

Wasn't close to getting dropped? We just moved him out of the club?! You do realise that we did not want to keep him, yeah?

We never really tried to keep him.

If your not in the 44 it's going to be difficult to be in the 22...

Note: Do people realise that we never really wanted him? Just a question - I thought we as a fandom were aware that clubs lowball players and offer them contracts they couldn't possibly sign, and value them so low, they couldn't possibly stay.

Even if Kennedy turns out to be the next Ablett, on what he's shown so far we come out the clear losers in this deal.

Well that's one of the dumbest things I've read here in a while

Even if Kennedy turns out to be the next Ablett, on what he's shown so far we come out the clear losers in this deal. Roos can complain about the air of negativity around the club all he wants, but how else can we react to [censored] like this?

What?

If Kennedy turns out to be the next Ablett, we should build a gold plated statue for Mahoney and Roos outside gate 2.

There's a difference between a player having more currency than what the club believes he's worth to them, and not being best 22. Same thing applied to Frawley last year.

The club clearly saw an opportunity with GC to get something big, and Howe was the only player with currency. Collingwood scuppered that potential deal, and we've been left with a trade that's fair, but doesn't necessarily improve our list.

Collingwood scuppered nothing. It was Collingwood all along. Buckley and Howe had been organising it for a long time.

you know that for sure?

Doesn't suprise me at all if true. Howe visibly tuned out during this season apart from taking speccies...Those i shall miss.

You're probably right, but that was unbeknownst to Melbourne and GC.

First interview with the filth he confirms that he and Buckley had been organising for a fair while and that the Bali meeting was just a catch up for a drink and to celebrate their shifty dealings.

He is a class act isn't he?

Explains why he was a Collingwood fan growing up.

I don't want players like that at our club, no matter how good they are. And he isn't even very good.

Enjoy your lazy turnover merchant Pies.

You're probably right, but that was unbeknownst to Melbourne and GC.

Correct. As is the rest of the post I was responding to. With Frawley it was simply a deal too good to refuse.

Happy to have Brayshaw in place of Frawley.

Back on topic, i'm very happy with kennedy (wish he was taller haha), but he shoes everything i could want in a young footballer and i remember rating him in his draft year. Even though they are highlights they show enough for me to be more excited for him already than Toumpas.. But i really hope Toumpas does well in port adelaide..

I'm excited for next year :)

To be fair, rpfc's post (which is no longer there) referred to Kent as being 'effective' on the forward flank. It said nothing about 'consistency'.

"He has to perform consistently to be near as effective as Kent is on a flank, then Kent has to adapt to being in the midfield well enough not to just abandon it and put him back on the HFF."

The inference I read from that was he thought Kent was consistent.

He has missed 34 games in three seasons mainly through injury and at 20 in 2014 was very impressive on a HFF.

I thought he performed his role consistently for a young player dealing with injuries. Kent is effective because he makes things happen and makes his touches count.

I don't see Kennedy as that type of player - hence why he is at the club.

Fair enough. We disagree then.

Exactly my thoughts... What on earth has the football department just done.

Kennedy is a hack. Too small for the midfield and unproven as a small forward.

Toumpas for pick 29??? Wtf!!!

Pick 4 in the draft a couple of years back. Makes me sick to the stomach that we passed on wines, McRae and stringer.

The drafting department needs to be shown the door after such a poor choice.

would have also preferred to keep him on the list as pick 29 in a weak draft as almost worthless.

put your faith in the decision makers. They wish to get it right. They are well considered decisions I'm sure. We just have to accept what we front up with and support the team once again. He looks hard at it at least, as does Melksham and so does this Bugg lad, so all I see is the club bringing in two hungry players, maybe a third for Howe and the Toump. Take it.

Paul Roos rarely gets it wrong with bringing in underrated talent, and letting players go. Kennedy looks alright to me. Worth the punt. He is manic and quick.

I rate Howe more than most here, and would have been more comfortable with a higher price for him. But having said that, I have faith in Roos.

So TGR you'd be prepared to have paid Howe $550K+ per year?

We never wanted him because we thought we would get overs for him in a trade.

That never happened and we couldn't all of a sudden change our mind.

We misjudged the situatuon

so.. there wasn't a dumb club that fell for the trick, and we only got a fair deal for him. That's a break-even, not a loss.

What?

If Kennedy turns out to be the next Ablett, we should build a gold plated statue for Mahoney and Roos outside gate 2.

perhaps he was referring to Nathan Ablett?

Admittedly a highlights package only on the MFC website, but to me Kennedy's skills are close to elite. Good kick, tough in and under, quick and knows where to run. If he can replicate those skills consistently, then I will be very happy we got him.

'We' did?

Spokesperson for the club.

We misjudged the situation

Yeah, you always do that for good players...

I have no doubt that we saw his value to GC as a boon - but we really didn't see him as a player to keep and that is how Collingwood got him at market value...

This isn't the disaster you are spruiking that it is...

Knightmare from bigfooty

Ben Kennedy (SA –Fwd/ Mid)
Height: 174cm, Weight: 76kg, DOB: 03/03/1994
Recruited from: Glenelg
Style: Brent Harvey
Player comparison:
Range: 13-30
Profile: Very small midfielder, but he can play. Has really elite explosive pace which would be in the very top percentile. As well as that pace he also uses it effectively and willingly takes on opposition players to effect. More than has the performances on the board and showed a lot during the 2011 and 2012 U18 championships. Kennedy is a big accumulator and can hit the scoreboard for a number of goals. Ball use generally very good. Has a neat left foot kick with nice real penetration and hurt factor with it. Very capable of winning his own ball. Marking ability good for a player of his height. I have some queries about eventual position. Not an elite inside ball winner or stoppage player to suggest his inside game develops into anything particularly outstanding, doesn’t really have much of an outside game, not finding enough outside ball then as a forward despite his pace his tackling game is good but not elite as you’d probably expect in a player of this type. Likely he develops into a rotation forward who can push into the midfield with his explosiveness for periods but it will be interesting to see if he can develop into more than a rotation/role player. Kennedy has a big chance of doing what Dion Prestia and Devon Smith have done in recent years in getting drafted early despite lack of height.

I have a feeling (and I've expressed it before) that we may not be going after Prestia all that hard.

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

The final score in Saturday's game against Hawthorn was almost identical to that from their last contest three months ago. Melbourne suffered comprehensive defeats in both games, but the similarities ended there. When they met in Round 9, the Demons were resurgent, seeking to redeem themselves after a lacklustre start to the season. They approached the game with vigour and dynamism, and were highly competitive for the first three quarters, during which they were at least on par with the Hawks. In the final term, they lapsed into error and were ultimately overrun, but the final result did not accurately reflect their effort and commitment throughout the match.

  • CASEY: Box Hill

The Casey Demons ended the regular season on a positive note and gained substantial momentum leading into the finals when they knocked the Box Hill Hawks off the top of the VFL ladder in their final round clash at Casey Fields. More importantly, they moved out of a wild card position in the finals race and secured a week's rest as they leapfrogged up the ladder into fifth place with their decisive 23-point victory over the team that had been the dominant force in the competition for most of the season.
