FAREWELL JIMMY TOUMPAS

Featured Replies

I would be surprised if Toumpas gets us anything but a third round pick. And I don't think he deserves more than a one-year deal on base wage.

We have to weigh whether it's worth hanging on to him for another year and seeing how he goes, or whether we trade for a late pick. I think the Toump has more chance of becoming a solid player than, say, pick 60 in a shallow draft. I'd back him in for another year and see how he goes.

Here we go again

This club should learn from the past and cut and run

Get what we can and stop deluding ourselves that we can make a silk purse out of this guy

He has shown absolutely zero lets just move on!

To what? Another player you can abandon in a few years?

Attributing the failure of the past to every thing you see similar in the future is not the way you get out of a rut - it's how you create a quagmire.

We are trying to get out of one.

Keeping people like Toumpas keeps us in the quagmire we need brave decisions this year

Whats the upside in keeping him for another contract, Hope and blind faith, A miracle that he will come good.

Clear him and move on

GTG..the thing I wonder about is why when many talk of Toumpas being let go etc is that its simply for a pick or a player. I.e him for something scenario.

I would think Toumpas will ( should he go ) be as a 'sweetener' to another deal. On his tod he might not fetch much in the market but as part of some package it might be the difference between us gaining something...or not.

I choose the word GAIN specifically because if Toumpas can help facilitate us getting something we need and can use then we have gained. If he ( JT ) gets to clear the decks and reboot...so does he.

I see nothing wrong with this.

For what though?

Have you thought about that?

Bring in a talent as speculative, or moreso?

Answer me these questions three...

I refer you to my comment above.

Toump may be part of a swap that lands something "non-speculative"

You re assuming only a narrow style of departure for him Id suggest

Well there is as much chance of getting a better player (We already know JT is no good) as not there for the odds are better

But even if he were to be a sweetener in any deal, his value is low. So he's not much of a sweetener.

The argument for keeping him therefore remains the same. Given his current value, another year isn't going to do much damage either way.

Imagine the razor blade shortage if we give him the boot merely to free up a spot on the list, and he goes on to excel elsewhere. Which is entirely possible. The kid has talent. It's between the ears that he seems to be struggling.

Often clubs evaluate players as to where and what as a role they can fill. They sometimes look at other club's lesser lights and wonder if a new environment , fresh start , different development might turn out a player different to the one that languishes etc at the 'other ' club. It happens.

We took on Michie..Riley ...they were speculative in nature. Another club may well do the same

So an empty chair is a better bet?

So an empty chair is a better bet?

No a chair filled by someone who hasn't yet proved to be a dud

Interesting sign that we announced the re signing of 4 young fellas and jimmy is not one of them

Has talent, all between the ears. Where have we heard that before....

IMO the only way he will be at the MFC in 2016 is that a deal with any value could not be done

thats about the length and breadth of it OD

why would he do better elsewhere?

we have spent a fortune on the footy department including specialists in player development

Toump has gone backwards in this great enviorement. We just have to accept that another year or two isn't going to make any difference and we are better using his spot for someone else to develop into.

maybe he just needs a fresh start.. It often works in many walks of life.

Thank you for highlighting one of the main things working against Toumpas with the fambase. He's come to a a club where failed first round picks has become a trademark. The patience here is a lot thinner than it would be at another club.

Treat his case on its own merits. The past is irrelevant.

True.

And we hang on to them and hang on to them and hang on to them.

Just like Watts... What's the point in trading him ? His potential is greater then his value. What would we get a pick in the late 20s, early 30s ? What's the point, would rather hold onto him then go with an unknown in the draft. If he doesn't cut it in the end like Morton then so be it

  • PREVIEW: St. Kilda

The media has performed a complete reversal in its coverage of the Melbourne Football Club over the past month and a half. Having endured intense criticism from all quarters in the press, which continually identified new avenues for scrutiny of every aspect, both on and off the field, and prematurely speculated about the departures of coaches, players, officials, and various employees from a club that lost its first five matches and appeared out of finals contention, the narrative has suddenly shifted to one of unbridled optimism.  The Demons have won five of their last six matches, positioning themselves just one game (and a considerable amount of percentage) outside the top eight at the halfway mark of the season. They still trail the primary contenders and remain far from assured of a finals berth.

  • REPORT: Sydney

A few weeks ago, I visited a fellow Melbourne Football Club supporter in hospital, and our conversation inevitably shifted from his health diagnosis to the well-being of our football team. Like him, Melbourne had faced challenges in recent months, but an intervention - in his case, surgery, and in the team's case, a change in game style - had brought about much improvement.  The team's professionals had altered its game style from a pedestrian and slow-moving approach, which yielded an average of merely 60 points for five winless games, to a faster and more direct style. This shift led to three consecutive wins and a strong competitive effort in the fourth game, albeit with a tired finish against Hawthorn, a strong premiership contender.  As we discussed our team's recent health improvement, I shared my observations on the changes within the team, including the refreshed style, the introduction of new young talent, such as rising stars Caleb Windsor, Harvey Langford, and Xavier Lindsay, and the rebranding of Kozzy Pickett from a small forward to a midfield machine who can still get among the goals. I also highlighted the dominance of captain Max Gawn in the ruck and the resurgence in form in a big way of midfield superstars Christian Petracca and Clayton Oliver.
