Eddie McGuire: Paul Roos "obvious choice" to fix Carlton

Featured Replies

On his radio show this morning he was talking about gambling in the AFL. It was an excellent segment - except that gambling advertising wasn't mentioned once. It's a pretty big hole to leave in the conversation.

They were talking about players and punters getting help etc, but nothing about how the AFL condones this behaviour with the constant adds and odds splashed at us on telecasts and at the ground.

Funny about that Choke

You will not hear much criticism from the Footy media it pays half their wages

Would demonlanders trade hogan for fyfe?

nooo,,, only if Hoges had his mind set on Perth... only then would I consider some sort of trade for him.

  • 3 weeks later...

Was listening to the radio this morning and they were talking about the possibility of Brisbane getting a priority pick.

Eddie was saying: Brisbane should not get a priority pick, they got one last year in the form of dayne beams.

Agreed with the first part but that second part just sounds to me like he has his ass he can't see daylight. Pretty sure Collingwood were more than fairly compensated for Beams. He went on to say that priority picks are not needed now because free agency is the new priority picks.

Gerard Healy was pushing the idea on On the Couch. Personally I think the AFL needs to do more to help struggling clubs. I know we were left to hang out to dry due to the tanking episode, but the competition needs to revisit the draft order as an equalization mechanism. It takes too long for clubs to rebuild and players can now manipulate the system to get to the top clubs.

If we didn't get a priority pick the last 2 years nobody should get a priority pick ever again.

Show me a club that has been so consistently hopeless for as long as us, and I will consider giving them a pick.

We were struggling way back when Brisbane won 3 flags in a row.

Cry me a bloody river.

My solution to draft picks. This is every year no priority picks.

Finish 1 round 2nd round 3rd

18 1 & 9 37 55

17 2 & 11 38 56

16 3 & 13 39 57

15 4 & 15 40 58

14 5 23 41

13 6 24 42

12 7 25 43

11 8 26 44

10 10 27 45

9 12 28 46

8 14 29 47

7 16 30 48

6 17 31 49

5 18 32 50

4 19 33 51

3 20 34 52

2 21 35 53

1 22 36 54

The change to the top 7 teams is that they are pushed back 4 positions in the first round.

Finish 8th drop 3 positions - 9th drop 2 positions - 10th drop 1 position.

This will help the bottom 4 sides get back up more quickly without too much pain to other sides.

Edit: No huge advantage to encourage tanking.

Was Frawley worth band 1 compensation (not sure if correct term) ?? Forget any criteria, what was he really worth?

Brayshaw................hahahahahahha!

I think we had a win.

I reckon brisbane have a good list but leppa just isn't a great coach to be honest a midfield containing the calibre of blokes they have means they shouldn't need a priority pick

That was our Claytons priority pick.

If you're sitting in 14th there is a fairly obvious and beneficial incentive to tank.

Not really, picks 5 -23 -41 vs 4 -15-40

Second pick moves up 8 spots is not a great incentive to tank.

We could always relocate the club!??

To tank, no. To lose a Rd 21-22-23 game, maybe? In US sports teams tank all the time and tank hard from early in the year. That never happened with us, Carlton or anyone else in the AFL. Your proposed system wouldn't encourage bottom 4 teams to fight too hard in the last few rounds of the season but the notion that they have incentive to earn wins at that time of the year is foolish anyway. Of course you try to win but the last month or so for a bottom 4 team that's not winning games isn't really about finding a win or two anyway, it's about playing kids and players in new roles.

Back on topic. I think Carlton are about to start on a big rebuild. They need a fresh younger coach who will work on individual development whilst Silvagni makes the list management decisions.

Roos was important for us because we were in such a big whole cultural wise and with belief that we needed a proven winner. We had to bring in guys like Vince, Cross and Lumumba to get some experience around the place.

Carlton need to put a lot of money in to recruiting, development and their fitness department rather than hire Roos.

Nah. Keep BP around there. In fact, make him head of recruiting. ;)

  • REPORT: Carlton

The text messages started flooding in shortly after quarter time. One read: “Is Melbourne even at the ground?” Moments later, as Carlton’s Elijah Hollands kicked the first goal of the second term, the Blues held a commanding 43-point lead. By then, the Demons’ only score was a behind kicked by Brody Mihocek nearly five minutes into the game. Ironically, Mihocek would also register the last minor score of the day after the game took a dramatic turnaround.
