DEMONLAND PLAYER OF THE YEAR - ROUND 1, 2015

Featured Replies

Viney for his work on Ablett

Garland great to have him back in form

McDonald great marks and run out of the back

Hogan helped our smalls get into the game. Awesome to see him split some packs

Jones a good captains game

VanDemon much needed grunt. Can't wait to see him develop over the year

6 - Tom McDonald - an absolute rock, marked everything and provided great rebound

5 - Jack Viney - wore Ablett like a glove the first 3 quarters and smashed his shoulder into the turf at every opportunity.

4 - Nathan Jones - a usual Jones game, and thats a very good thing of course

3 - Jack Watts - looks set to arrive in 2015... will end up kicking around 40 goals

2 - Jeremy Howe - he made the half backline his own. Impenetrable and unbeatable in the air

1 - Daniel Cross - the ultimate professional, just keeps going and going

Apologies - Tyson, Newton, Lumumba, Garlett, Vandenberg, Garland, Hogan

After watching the replay I am swapping Viney and T Mac

6-McDonald. Was impassable and almost had perfect disposal efficiency

5-Garland. Had a flawless game, back to his creative running best.

4-Viney. Defensively brilliant, and used it very well

3-Jonesy. Ho-hum, same old bleed for the jumper stuff.

2-Watts. He's gonna be a hard man to stop this year.

1-Vandenberg. Is he a midfielder, a forward. Skills, nasty, speed and footy smarts.

6 - Tom McDonald

5 - Jack Watts

4 - Jeff Garlett

3 - Jack Viney

2 - Colin Garland

1 - Dom Tyson

No votes from me. Too hard to split the hairs. For so long I've struggled to find 6 who deserved it, now there are too many. I'll just say it was an amazing effort and almost everyone had an impact. Great job to the team.

I ask again this year that the sample be broadened to at least five or six.

Three is too small as the middle tier players sometimes don't get the recognition they deserve in the final rankings, because their votes are missed.

I took a sample of ten in the unofficial one last year and the top five were the same, but it is the ranking of players beyond the Joneses and Tysons that I think many are interested in.

Thanks. A response to this suggestion would be appreciated. I'm yet to receive one.

Thanks for your suggestion and we understand where you're at but we've decided to stick with our usual format.

Please feel free however, to run your own separate format and we can compare outcomes at the end of the year.

Cheers,

Andy

Cheers Andy, no worries.

I'll think about running it again.

6. T-Mac - marked everthing, created drive and was assured

5. N Jones - closely checked but always amongst it and pivotal scoring involvements each time GC came at us. A true captains game

4. J Viney - great job on Ablett, won lots of ball and good kicking inside 50

3. Garlett - could have easily kicked 3 - 4, goals/scoring involvements at key times and running goal from centre clearance was awesome

2. Hogan - provided a real presence up forward, took marks, crashed packs, kicked goals and involved in a number of goals

1. Garland - excellent on Ablett and catalyst for our drive out of backline. Looks to regain his 2013 form and really underrated player.

6: McDonald

5: Watts

4: Viney

3: Jones

2: Garland

1: vandenBerg

Problem, so many good players tomorrow I could change my mind.

But nice problem to have!

6. McDonald - Marked everything and made some good attacks from defence, can only remember one really bad turnover trying to center it inside the defensive 50
5. Garlett - Don't remember the last time someone has kicked a running goal from the center bounce. We have severely lacked a quick small forward for a long time and looked extremely dangerous whenever he got it

4. Jones - Standard Jones game really
3. Watts - Presented hard all day. The palm back to Garlett and the goal from the boundary the highlights

2. Viney - A bit sloppy early but rode Gablett hard all day and got plenty of ball for himself including setting up several goals

1. Garland - I was disappointed with his 2014 season but he looked like the Garland of old. Had high hopes for him this season and a very good start to it

6. McDonald

5. Watts

4. Jones

3. Garlett

2. Viney

1. Garland

Is it easy enough to set up a poll?

blatant anti-watts discrimination!

Ablett was underdone, and he had a fair impact anyway, having a hand in about 5 goals! None of Viney's possessions did much damage! Overrated performance!

Not true,

Had multiple center clearances in the last quarter where he pumped inside 50 that resulted in goals

Kicked it to Hogan in the last for the sealing goal

Forgot to add that he hit Watts on the chest in the 3rd quarter, resulting in a goal to Watts

  • PREVIEW: North Melbourne

Can you believe it? After a long period of years over which Melbourne has dominated in matches against North Melbourne, the Demons are looking down the barrel at two defeats at the hands of the Kangaroos in the same season. And if that eventuates, it will come hot on the heels of an identical result against the Gold Coast Suns. How have the might fallen? There is a slight difference in that North Melbourne are not yet in the same place as Gold Coast. Like Melbourne, they are currently situated in the lower half of the ladder and though they did achieve a significant upset when the teams met earlier in the season, their subsequent form has been equally unimpressive and inconsistent.

  • REPORT: Adelaide

The atmosphere at the Melbourne Football Club at the beginning of the season was aspirational following an injury-plagued year in 2024. Coach Simon Goodwin had lofty expectations with the return of key players, the anticipated improvement from a maturing group with a few years of experience under their belts, and some exceptional young talent also joining the ranks. All of that went by the wayside as the team failed to click into action early on. It rallied briefly with a new strategy but has fallen again with five more  consecutive defeats.

  • CASEY: Coburg

The Casey Demons returned to their home ground which was once a graveyard for opposing teams but they managed to gift the four points on offer to Coburg with yet another of their trademark displays of inaccuracy in front of goals and some undisciplined football that earned the displeasure of the umpires late in the game. The home team was welcomed by a small crowd at Casey Fields and looked right at home as it dominated the first three quarters and led for all bar the last five minutes of the game. In the end, they came away with nothing, despite winning everywhere but on the scoreboard and the free kick count.

  • PREGAME: Rd 18 vs North Melbourne

After four weeks on the road the Demons make their long awaited return to the MCG next Sunday to play in a classic late season dead rubber against the North Melbourne Kangaroos. Who comes in and who comes out?

  • POSTGAME: Rd 17 vs Adelaide

The Demons were wasteful early before putting the foot down early in the 2nd quarter but they chased tail for the remainder of the match. They could not get their first use of the footy after half time and when they did poor skills, execution and decision making let them down.
