With the news that Vince will be out for another month i think its the perfect opportunity for these two to step up and fill in that role that Bernie Plays. Both players that can play inside and out and have good all round skill set. Both have showed glimpses that they could become very good AFL players.

I was also going to put Angus Brayshaw in there aswell but probably a bit too early for him.

Last year it was Hogan and Clark. We are better placed to cover injuries this year. Don't despair, we will enter the competition competive in all areas of the ground, even the midfield.

Just looking at a pic of Stretch on the MFC website and he has more muscle on him than I ever remember his old man having and from all reports he has done everything right in his first pre-season. There has been a bit of an emphasis on no saviours since Roos has taken over and I'm looking forward to seeing who can cement a spot in the team based on form because we finally have depth.

Stretch could be a DT smokey this year, hasn't put a foot wrong.

I reckon this concept of "depth" is very overstated here. We've got depth in developing talent and footballers with potential but we don't have 30 players who have proven they can play consistent AFL footy.

When I try and put my best 22 together there are 10 or so vying for the last 5 spots but none of them would get much of a look in at the top clubs. I'm not saying we aren't on the improve, just that we have potential that people are interpreting as depth. It's the same "depth" that Blease, Strauss, Tappy and a host of others have provided in previous years.

I take your point but if you look at the thread where posters choose their best 22 plenty have Grimes missing a spot. He was captain last year. That's no Blease, Straus or Tappy.

There's a lot of hope that this depth is a bit better but unfortunately that's not yet proven.

I reckon his "disposal issues" have been, largely, a result of having no first options upfield combined with the weight of captaincy.

I'm happy to have him controlling our rebound 50's this year if everyone else does their job.

Our list is looking healthier this year than last, we have greater depth and competition for positions, our new draftees over the last couple of years like Salem, Kent, JKH all deserve game time. If we keep turning over 14 or so players each year and drafting well to replace them with we will have much better depth.

As someone else mentioned here, the thing that concerns me about Newton is Kane Mitchell who is one of the worst players I've ever seen was getting a game ahead of him late in the year.

He wasn't competing with him for a spot, he was competing with Wines and Cornes.

I doubt we'll turn over more than eight this year, possibly fewer. We needed a big cleanout, but it's done and further changes on that scale will just cause instability. No risk of MFC doing that under its present leadership.

Turning over 14 players a year is turning over the list every 3 years, for obvious reasons, that won't happen. Interestingly though we have turned over 20 odd players over the previous 2 seasons (half the list), so we are still actively re-building, although we are doing it without any fanfare

Take Georgiou and Clisby for example only 1 & 2 years on the list, under the previous leadership i suspect these two would still be on the list but under the current leadership these two are done.

We still have many players who were drafted from 2007-2011 who could be turned over Spencer, Mckenzie, Fitzpatrick these guys haven't had much success in their careers and wouldn't get games with other clubs.

If Max King, James Harmes, Jayden Hunt don't show that they are going to make it this year I wouldn't be suprised to see them gone also.

The current leadership is making harsh but better decisions than previous leadership which is causing stability not instability.

At the end of the year turned over players might be

Fitzpatrick

Mckenzie

Terlich

Harmes

Hunt

King

I don't think any of these guys are really going to be good AFL players and the current leadership is making the right decisions.
