I never cast an opinion pre draft on who we should select as all I had to go on was a 3 minute highlight reel. But the reel I enjoyed the most was Laverde's. If he can bring that 3 minute reel every week for 120 minutes then wow ( obviously that doesn't happen)

For all those on the "ready to go " bandwagon. Read the weaknesses Of both boys and it naturally keeps coming up the same - engine and endurance. They may have big bodies but they do not yet have the endurance. I wouldn't put any limits on their first season but realistically they need a couple seasons before they will be regular features in the midfield playing big minutes. I see petracca used mainly up forward to start and even brayshaw will be used sparingly in the guts.

We can see how Roos has brought up his young players both at Sydney and last year at Melbourne on a gradual basis to ensure they fit in to the scene without the pressure our recruits have had placed on them in the past. Christian Salem was a good example but I also expect Jimmy Toumpas to kick on in leaps and bounds with a full pre season behind him. He should also gain from the SA connection with Alex Neal-Bullen and Billy Stretch to help them settle into the club.

Time will obviously tell how we fared last night, but the two big ticks for me are: (1) taking footballers over athletes, and (2) taking pure midfielders / key position players over utility types.

It has been a long, long time since we did that. I think last year's draft was a missed opportunity, although I quite like JKH, but I feel quite positive this time.

I think most good clubs, who have a good spread of mature players think that way. Our problem has been that we have not had the mature players who pick themselves week in week out that allows the kids to develop at their own pace. The common denominator with all these kids is they are all essentially missing components to being productive footballers on a regular basis from the get go. No preseasons and TAC training means they will usually lack one or more of endurance/size and muscle/defensive efforts.

I would suggest that even Port Adelaide did not expect the output they got from Wines in year one.

I have expectations that Toumpas must take big strides this season ( year 3) and also see more productivity from Salem and JKH (year 2)

What I expect is cameo's from Petracca and Brayshaw like we got from Salem and JKH. What I hope for is for Petracca and/or Brayshaw to overachieve in year one and do an Ollie Wines. I won't slash my wrists if they don't.

The other thing i like is that all three mids seem senior team ready with CP and AB built like bulls, AB being 19 (he missed last years draft by 3 days) and Neal-Bullen having already played senior footy with Glenelg.

Ad the Hulk to that mix and you have four new boys who seemingly can mix it up.

Last year we traded out 2 for Tyson who proved to be a revelation in his first year and Salem who showed signs. JKH also showed signs ( big disclaimer - both Salem and JKH have to continue to improve as we all seen "Signs" before). We used our Sylvia pick on Vince and he was good for us. The only player we saw nothing of was Hunt.

I think we need around 4 years to gauge the success or fail of a draft but one year after the 2013 draft you wouldn't be unhappy with what we have achieved so far.

We are so busy patting each other on the back over tonight that perhaps it is time to thank our recruiting staff! THANK YOU!

(a) We didn't turn the list over enough so we didn't bring enough young talent into the club. We could easily have delisted the likes of Strauss and Tapscott last year, and have been no worse off, other than a few $$ down the drain.

(b) I'm not 100% sold on Salem becoming a genuine AFL midfielder, and both JKH and Hunt are both utility types, rather than meeting our number 1 need of getting our hands on the footy more. Hunt seems a long way off being an AFL player and I'm not sure how he fits in to Roos view of an ideal fit for AFL football.

Ok, well Hunt was ND57 and our next pick for Strauss and Tapscott would have been ND82 and ND90 after ND72 was involved in the Tyson trade.

I guess we could have picked up some DFAs or state level players but doing so would mean we would lose 2 of the players we have got this trade/draft period. So 2 of Lumumba, Newton, Garlett, Frost, Petracca, Brayshaw, Neal-Bullen, Stretch, and McDonald would not have been recruited. Instead we would have had a couple of delisted players, state players or young players at ND82 and ND90...

You might be right about Salem and JKH but, really, it's not so simple to say 'we should have got rid of him a year ago' when you don't properly discuss the opportunity cost it sounds a bit superficial.
