DRAFT DAY - 2014

Featured Replies

We are so busy patting each other on the back over tonight that perhaps it is time to thank our recruiting staff! THANK YOU!

It's a bit early picking a team but here goes:

B: Jetta, Frost, Dunn

HB: Lumumba, McDonald, Garland

C: Vince, Viney, Watts

HF: Petracca, Dawes, Howe

F: Garlett, Hogan, Kent

Fol: Jamar, N. Jones, Tyson

I/C: Cross, Brayshaw, Salem, Toumpas

Em: Michie, Gawn, Pederson

Grimes will play and we will need a second ruck.

Getting there.

To be fair it's a struggle this early but they are two pretty key factors missing

I still cant believe that the saints coach said petracca was the best player in the draft - then they picked paddy.

All orchestrated by the AFL marketing/PR department to keep things "exciting". Wouldn't read too much into it.

In spite of the public posturing, St Kilda were always going down this road once Boyd ended up at the Dogs.

Love the wrap for Melbourne's recruiting efforts!

Christ almighty.. Viney, Petracca, Brayshaw, Neal-Bullen with Toumpas, Salem & Stretch on the outside and all of them feeding Hogan. WOW!

I told myself after the last few (or more) years I will no longer get my hopes up.

[censored] it ... WOW indeed.

... and then add Tyson and Jones

I always wonder where people get the idea that Salem is an outside player, maybe it's because he looks a bit like Toumpas in appearance.

Thanks for this WJ

In: Jeff Garlett (Carlton) Sam Frost (GWS Giants) Heritier Lumumba (Collingwood) Ben Newton (Port Adelaide) Billy Stretch (father-son)

National Draft Ins: 2-Christian Petracca, 3-Angus Brayshaw, 40-Alex Neal-Bullen, 42-Billy Stretch, 53-Oscar McDonald

Out: Dom Barry (retired) Sam Blease (Geelong) Shannon Byrnes (retired) Mitch Clark (Geelong) Mitch Clisby (delisted) Michael Evans (delisted) James Frawley (Hawthorn) Alex Georgiou ® (delisted) Dan Nicholson (delisted) James Strauss (delisted) Luke Tapscott (delisted)

So... 11 out, 10 in? Does that mean one rookie spot available????????

Gawn will possibly play Round 1 [as Dawes is suspended] but not so sure about Grimes automatic inclusion [as Captain] when you consider the depth that we have added through the Trading/Draft!

You've listed Stretch twice, plus Jetta was promoted. I think we have two rookies left in Harmes and King right now, so two spots left.

James who?

Most likely the one and only time I will ever appreciate a lack of loyalty.

It took me about two minutes to work out who you were talking about. Cant remember the last time I have heard him refered to as James.

2 rookie. Think you are missing Jetta being upgraded.

Gawn or Pederson

Grimes, i think he is a walk up. Disposal is iffy, but 1%ers second to none

Newton might be ahead of the younger fellas

I'm gonna do a team, but every time I try I think of one or two changes.

Jordie Mckenzie and Ro Bail would be feeing nervous right about now

Not the only ones. Harmes, Hunt, Mitchie, Riley. With the new additions we've got about 10 players going for 2 spots.

Survival of the fittest, will be an interesting couple of years.

THe coaches have talked for several years about creating competition for places and pressure on the guys in the side. Now we have it.

Round 1 2017.

B: Jetta, Frost, Dunn

HB: Lumumba, Toumpas, T. McDonald

C: Vince, Viney, Stretch

HF: Petracca, Dawes, Watts

F: Howe, Hogan, Kennedy-Harris

Fol: Gawn, N. Jones, Tyson

I/C: Brayshaw, Salem, Neal-Bullen (Kent)

Em: Michie, Garland, Grimes, O. McDonald, Garlett, Pederson, Newton, Riley and on and on she goes..

Okay, time to settle. Need to let these players build their name rather than the other way around.

...

What it's about is for at least one or two of that "promising" 10 to make the step up into A-grade.

Rather than 10 "fringe" mids out of which we have to choose 4 (or whatever). Which is what we've had so far.

Jordie Mckenzie and Ro Bail would be feeing nervous right about now

so would M.Jones, Toumpas, Riley and Michie. All of them are very replaceable/surpass-able

For all those on the "ready to go " bandwagon. Read the weaknesses Of both boys and it naturally keeps coming up the same - engine and endurance. They may have big bodies but they do not yet have the endurance. I wouldn't put any limits on their first season but realistically they need a couple seasons before they will be regular features in the midfield playing big minutes. I see petracca used mainly up forward to start and even brayshaw will be used sparingly in the guts.

You hope that Salem and Toumpas can take the next steps and play solid midfield minutes so Petracca or Brayshaw can play roles as the sub and up forward. But I think like Salem and JKH they will play bit roles.
