Demonbracket 50 - Celebrating 50 Fruitless Years

On behalf of the esteemed Supermercado/Demonblog, and the organising committee, it is my immense pleasure to introduce you to Demonbracket 50.

Over the course of November, we'll endeavour to find our favourite (important distinction: FAVOURITE, not best) Demon player of the post Premiership era.

I won't go into enormous detail here, as all info can be found at http://mfcdemonblog.blogspot.com.au/

However, some quick house keeping.....

Tomorrow at 10am, we unveil the draw. No drip feed like the AFL, but will offer one 1st round match up: Graeme Yeats v Andy Lovell. That's a tough one, many others are easier.

Details on voting days in the above link.

For clarity, we put some rules in place to arrive at the 128 selected.

- must have debuted after 1964 (ie no Demon premiership players)

- all 2014 listed players excluded (they have their own Demonbracket in February)

- ex Melbourne players who are on a 2015 list excluded (Beamer, Brock and Warnock retired/delisted, so have been included).

- First 123 players were ordered by games played (we were pretty stoked that player 123 happened to be a controversial full forward with a fat arse)

- Last 5 players were wildcards selected by Mercado, myself, Foundation Hero Elliot Swart, and the great Matt Burgan. Our one criteria was a wildcard had to have played at least 30 games. So apologies to fans of Phil Egan, Dannie Seow or Haydn Lamaro.

- 16 seeds were initially selected in order of games played. Was decided at the 11th hour that we'd honour Robbie and Jimmy by placing them 1 and 2, ahead of Neitz. the 16th seed was gifted to Jakovich, A. Partly to right the wrongs of the 2008 150 Heroes committee, but mostly because we could. Deal with it!

We haven't tasted much (any) success in the past 50 years, but we've had our share of beloved footballers. Please take the opportunity to get involved and vote daily. We're working to get the club on board via Matt Burgan, and we'll be harassing former players on Twitter. Should be heaps of fun.

Go Jako,

Chook.

This is a fantastic idea

Will go with Yeata first up tomorrow and l look forward to further daily match ups although I think at the pointy end it may be only a contest for the minor placings

Geez did I explain it that badly?!

the draw tomorrow. Next week match ups begin. Will be lots of them each day initially.

I'm thinking Glenn Swann, Darryl Cutherbetson, David Cordner, George Lakes, Peter Yeo, Peter Weekes, John Gallus, Russell Reynolds, Vincent Cattogio, Russell Collcott, Phil Carmen, (pipping P. Keenan, Jacko, Alan Jakovich, Steven O'Dwyer and Brent Crosswell), and not to mention Ed Burston, the boom recruit of 1966. So much for this much-maligned era.

Most of those didn't meet our criteria.

To clarify the top 128 was chosen by games played + a handful of wildcards. I'd love to have included bizarre novelty players like Hayden Lamaro but that would have blown it out to a 256 person tournament - which I'm sure you'll agree would be extremely unwieldly. Maybe next year we'll do an obscure bracket for players under 30 games only.

Happy voting sports fans.

Fantastic news - thanks for organising this Demonblog & support crew

Going to be many hard decisions

I can't even decide between Yeater & Chopper. Two great servants of the Club, two great mullets, two great blokes. I do like a bloke who can chop wood though...

Had finally gotten over the constant refresh pressing syndrome after trade week and was finally beginning to focus at work again and now this comes along. First up I'm going with Chopper, loved a rover who could go goal for goal against Jakovich (once kicked 8 apiece in a game, glorious), and also hoping big Strawbs O'Dwyer gets a run!

HEAVEN OR HELL by The Oracle

Clashes between Melbourne and St Kilda are often described as battles between the forces of heaven and hell. However, based on recent performances, it’s hard to get excited about the forthcoming match between these two sides. It would be fair to say that, at the moment, both of these teams are in the doldrums. The Demons have become the competition’s slow starters while the Saints are not only slow to begin, they’re not doing much of a job finishing off their games either. About the only th

    THE BLOW by Whispering Jack

Narrm’s finals prospects took a crushing blow after the team’s insipid performance at Optus Stadium against a confident Waaljit Marawar in the first of its Doug Nicholls Round outings for 2024.  I use the description “crushing blow” advisedly because, although the season is not yet at it’s halfway mark, the Demons have now failed abysmally in two of their games against teams currently occupying bottom eight places on the ladder.  The manner in which these losing games were played out w

HALF FULL by KC from Casey

It was a case of the Casey Demons going into a game with a glass half full in their match up against the Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields on Saturday. As the list of injured and unavailable AFL and VFL listed players continues to grow and with Melbourne taking all three emergencies to Perth for the weekend on a “just in case” basis, its little brother was always destined to struggle. Casey was left with only eight AFL listed players from who to select their team but only two - an out-of-form

GAMEDAY: Rd 10 vs West Coast

It's Game Day and the Demons have returned to the site of their drought breaking Premiership to take on the West Coast Eagles in what could very well be a danger game for Narrm at Optus Stadium. A win and a percentage boost will keep the Dees in top four contention whilst a loss will cast doubt on the Dees flag credentials and bring them back to the pack fighting for a spot in the 8 as we fast approach the halfway point of the season.

    WARNING by William from Waalitj

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k
