Is Queen's Birthday holiday at risk?

Victoria goes to the polls at the end of November and current indications are that the ALP lead by Daniel Andrews will topple the incumbent Lib/Nat coalition lead by Denis Napthine.

Andrews has promised a public holiday will be created for the Friday prior to the Grand Final. My suspicion is that he will do this by getting rid of the Queen's Birthday public holiday. I have no evidence to support this, but Andrews is cunning and abolishing the QB holiday will (1) placate business who would otherwise complain about an additional public holiday and (2) help promote the republican cause.

Even if I'm wrong, I don't see the QB holiday existing for much longer anyway. I expect it will be abolished once Her Majesty departs this mortal coil. We need to be developing a strategy for an alternative blockbuster game to replace what I think will be taken from us, not by the AFL, but eventually by politicians. I'm just fearful it will happen sooner, rather than later.

This is the kind of politicians promise that is usually quietly forgotten once they win power. Too many apple carts to upset.

I'm pretty sure the new public holiday brings us back in line with other states. In Victoria we have one less than all others. Happy to be corrected.

Also Queens Birthday doesn't fall on the Queens actual birthday. I think it was close to the previous King's birthday. Anyway I doubt it will be scrapped or moved in the short to medium term.

Eddie would never allow it.

TBH, if we get good enough to have a few Fri night games against good Vic sides I don't care if we lose QB. $ wise 3 Fri night > 1 QB game.

Would rather have Anzac Eve vs Tiges instead - has historical significance for both teams.

Happy to lose QB just to stop Eddie crowing about how generous he is and that it is our grand final.

Tired of being looked down upon and seen to be living on hnad-outs.

True if our queen passes away the Queen's Birthday Holiday there will be no more because it will then be called the King's Birthday Holiday.

Im not...thats OUR game.. a rare day when WE are on the stage. By all means build up the Fridays...but hands off OUR Monday...( oh ...and the filth I guess..lol )

IF we lost it the AFL would compensate with another 'blockbuster'. So what if it's not on a public holiday. I would rather it be on Thursday night before good Friday or ANZAC eve. That way I can enjoy the game and celebrate after, Monday isn't that appealing to families

I'm doubtful those of us born after 1952 will ever see a King's Birthday Holiday. I expect that public holiday to be abolished and replaced with something else...whether it's a public holiday before Grand Final day or something else.

A grand final eve public holiday would replace show day which we lost some time ago. Would be happy to get a PH to fill that long gap between QB and Cup day.

How on earth is a public holiday afternoon game not appealing to families? Do you really think a Thursday night game at the end of a school day is more acceptable to families with young children?

There is absolutely no guarantee that we would receive another blockbuster game of equal standing - teams are queueing up for a chance to host Collingwood.

Won't it just be replaced by King's Birthday?

School finished at three p.m. mate, that's a whole four hours to get to the game, unless you are comming from Albury I can't see how a Thursday night game is hard to get to and you have all of Friday for your children to sleep in and do sweet f.a. As opposed to a Monday after a weekend when kids get home at 6 hyped up and have to be ready for school the next day as Queens Tuesday isn't a holiday. I am certain that a King's Birthday game would replace Queen's Birthday, it is unlikely they will scrap QB holiday, even Canada still have QB holiday. It would be highly offensive to the monarchists.

Why not just move labour day instead?

Eddie is a republican

its about the holiday game blockbuster and the Magpies on the big stage...yet again ...not about the reason we have the day in first place

Would rather ANZAC eve against the Tigers.

Pies fans simply don't show up the the QB game most years and the crowd isn't that much greater, I believe anyway, than it would be if it were a standard Home and Away match. Added to that is the way we are completely shafted commercially in the rest of the FIXture and it all isn't worth it in my mind.

ANZAC eve against the Tigers, split the gate. Rotate QB if it is to stay with Collingwood and split the gate. If we lose it, we lose it. Would rather grab a few home games against Hawthorn, Essendon, Richmond, Carlton than perenial home matches against all 7 interstate sides.

Would rather ANZAC eve against the Tigers.

ya see here is why I think differently

Because of a little girl in a taco ad? I'd like to think I reasoned more thoroughly than that...

shes not the reason...shes the message....one you clearly dont get

I know... it was this thing called a joke, you might have heard of them. A republican up in arms about loosing a game on queens birthday... do I need to continue? Because I'm really bored right now and got a lot of time my hands today.

maybe get better joke writers...

Eddie's brother Frank is a Victorian member of Parlaiment. So Eddie has a back door influence. The Republican movement is as dead as the dodo. No one gives a fark anymore. Nothing will change.

Not sure about that. Interesting we have a holiday on a day that is not the current Monarch's actual birthday, yet we dissed the farmers in this State by getting rid of the show day holiday. Anyways, whenever we play Collingwood, it will be big. Don't know we really need a holiday for that to occur.

I often find that little kids make more sense then adults.

  • REPORT: Carlton

I am now certain that the decline in fortunes of the Melbourne Football Club from a premiership power with the potential for more success to come in the future, started when the team ran out for their Round 9 match up against Carlton last year. After knocking over the Cats in a fierce contest the week before, the Demons looked uninterested at the start of play and gave the Blues a six goal start. They recovered to almost snatch victory but lost narrowly with a score of 11.10.76 to 12.5.77. Yesterday, they revisited the scene and provided their fans with a similar display of ineptitude early in the proceedings. Their attitude at the start was poor, given that the game was so winnable. Unsurprisingly, the resulting score was almost identical to that of last year and for the fourth time in succession, the club has lost a game against Carlton despite having more scoring opportunities.

  • CASEY: Carlton

The Casey Demons smashed the Carlton Reserves off the park at Casey Fields on Sunday to retain a hold on an end of season wild card place. It was a comprehensive 108 point victory in which the home side was dominant and several of its players stood out but, in spite of the positivity of such a display, we need to place an asterisk over the outcome which saw a net 100 point advantage to the combined scores in the two contests between Demons and Blues over the weekend.

  • POSTGAME: Carlton

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.
