Unofficial Demonland Player of the Year - Final Tally

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

As a precursor to the official reveal, below are the final standings of my own tally of the votes this year.

I have used a different system to the site's sample of 3 voters, and have instead taken a wider sample of 10 voters to provide as a comparison. This isn't to say this system is better or worse, but my own view is that a sample of 3 is not big enough so I did this for my own interest and am sharing in case others wish to get another perspective.

Each week there are 210 votes available (10 x 6,5,4,3,2,1).

Included in brackets are the number of games in which the player polled reasonably well (the benchmark for which I set at 10 votes or more), the number of games played, and the time spent on ground.

Winners are:

  1. N Jones - 691 (17 - 22 - 87.4%)
  2. Tyson- 525 (13 - 22 - 77.6%)

Slightly off-topic, but the time-on-ground percentage for Tyson and Viney is pretty revealing of the way those younger guys still need to develop their tanks. They're both on the bench for a full 10% of the game more than Nathan Jones (who, not surprisingly, sets the standard for the midfield). Ten or twelve more minutes of Dom Tyson per match next year will help make his stats look even more impressive … and help us as a team.

*I don't remember either Tyson or Viney being sub at all, but it may have happened once or twice, which would have an effect on their TOG%.

The fact that experienced players such as Dawes, Jamar and Frawley have been (effectively) given a pass mark in 5 or less games across an entire season says everything about why this club is where it is. Until we can find a bunch of players who can match Nathan Jones's ability to put in every week, no matter what the circumstances, we will remain a poor football team.

The only thing I'd add is that 10 votes is actually a "good" game, not necessarily a "pass" game. A player may poll a single vote from 5 different people which would in most people's reckoning constitute a pass, but if they didn't accumulate 10 votes it wasn't added to that figure of "good" games.

But your point is still valid.

Matt Burgan's predictions - http://www.melbournefc.com.au/news/2014-09-02/jones-to-win-his-third-bluey-in-a-row

1. N Jones

2. Tyson

3. Vince

4. Dunn

5. Howe

6. Cross

7. Frawley

8. Watts

9. Viney

10. Pedersen

In the mix:

6-10. McDonald

6-12. Jetta

Edge of 10. Grimes, M Jones, Bail, Dawes

10-15. Jamar

His top six is reasonable, but from there it drifts into the slightly bizarre.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
