How many competitive games did Hogan play last year compared to McCartin? A big preseason could see McCartin picked before Hogan!

Hogan will have particpated in the better part of 3 preseasons before he hits the grass in 15. Not a squeaky clean progress though out all of that but thats a bit of a difference as compared to where anyone else will start from.

As part of the " we dont need another saviour" maxim now entrenched at the club we dont need Mccartin to start the season. We do need to develop him or whoever into playing AFL

Yeah, nah.

Ever thought of picking/not picking him on form? Roos has form on this. JKH.

That would overcome this rather brainless discussion of whether he deserves a game round 1 and your premise that "good clubs would do". Good clubs would pick him if he was in the best 22. If he's in ours he plays.

Sorry to hear youre brainless Bob, must make life hard.

Theres a vast difference between selecting a KPF and an ancillary role player. Wouldnt you say ?

What if Hogan does his back in again?

Maybe apart from Hogan, he is better. Gawn is a ruck, Pedersen & Fitzpatrick depth.

Now for one thing we might not even have McCartin and if we do I wouldn't be ruling a line through him just yet. I wouldn't be gifting games to Pedersen, Gawn or Fitzpatrick because they've been around a while.

I am sick of gifting games to players who don't deserve it be they kids or experienced campaigners.

Is he better? Or will he be better?

Pedersen would be his little play thing for a couple of years if they went head to head.

You say Pedersen and Fitz are depth? I say McCartin is depth too - until he proves himself to be more than that.

We are a terrible team with a compromised list - there are going to guys being gifted games, there should now be an emphasis on properly preparing talent before exposing them to AFL.

All I will say is that McCartin will earn his place in the 22 because Roos has a history of not playing kids simply because they are 'supposed' to be better than the journeymen that are currently in the team.

I can see a team with Gawn, Hogan and Pedersen as tall forwards in Rd 1 being the best combination the list has at that present time.

I actually hope we do have to pick him because his early form warrants it. That would mean that ready to play round one means ready to play round one - (who would have thought !)

I hope he kicks the door down and jumps up and down on it for next 10 years - it means we got ourselves a really good draft pick (w ho would have thought)

What if Hogan does his back in again?

What if he does, what if he doesnt. I seriously dont see that as an automatic 'pick the noobie' case scenario

as RPFC has highlighted there are others , already established and experienced to fulfill these roles whilst the new kid gets some education.

Not playing anyone unless he has a good reason and they deserve their spot.

Not sure what you're meaning here 'rpfc' but if they went head to head McCartin wouldn't be a play thing, that bit I can guarantee you.

Yeah I know, my comment was just referring to the fact that anything could happen.

Would a year out of football make one rusty enough to the point where they almost have to learn the game again, or is it all ingrained?

Now thats a very good question. I think it does depend on the individual as we all rebound somewhat differently.

What he JH HAS learnt cant really be un-learned. His experience is still experience. His condition might go to another question , related though.

I would have thought, and yes is just my h-o , that as Jesse ramps up his training and does his preseason then hed be pretty ripe to go .

I suppose its up to others to climb walls ad kick down doors but even then they'll only get noticed, no guarantee , nor real "NEED" to pick them round 1

I can't believe you guys are arguing over wether a player will play round 1 when we hav'nt even drafted him yet.

Sorry.....Keep going...

Who's this bloke Petracca btw ??

He's a kid.

If he earns it, then great.

Personally, I hope he doesn't play AFL in 2015.

I want Pedersen to continue his form and give us something over and above what a teenager could give. And I want that teenager to learn how to play against men in the VFL.

Then i'm afraid it will look like this.

How many leading goal kicking tittles and best and fairest's has McCartin won at Casey in the VFL playing against men?

We can't lose. We either get two good mids who compliment each other.

Or we get a good mid and a big forward.

How many full seasons has McCartin been injured for?

Developing under roo while he is there, no players of that type/quality in the next draft,

Massive chance we land petracca here

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 1 Steven May

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: #3 Christian Salem

Salem proved to be a valuable contributor as a reliable and solid one-on-one medium-sized defender in what was undoubtedly his most impressive season since the premiership year. He remains a highly capable rebounding option for the Demons as he approaches his 200th game at the club.
