I would have thought as a prospective assistant coach you would be very interested in learning your craft under someone who has a similar style to what you feel you would have,

I see Cameron Ling as a really good footy mind and a really good communicator, a lot more of a paul roos style coach than say a brad scott, chris scott or Mick Malthouse type, which is why I think he will end up at the MFC whether that be as an Assistant coach or a successor, personally I think Kirk is still the obvious candidate for successor.

Ling has also stated he is still open to considering working on Carlton's coaching team despite his run in with Malthouse:

binoculars give a narrow viewed individual an even more narrow field of vision. No wonder he's losing his plot. his tight view is screwing his head.

he better take up with a magnified mono field scope before it goes too far.

So Ling is not coaching at the AFL level and would be considered an inexperience coach.

Why are we waiting as he is perfect for the MFC.

I must confess I don't see why we are going so hard after Ling. He is a great football mind and there have been many players from the Cats say that in his last few years he was like a playing coach, but he's gone straight into the media after football. There are several astute and highly rated assistants that have been in the system for a while. The idea of a short apprenticeship much like Buckley has me concerned, since taking over as senior coach after Malthouse the Pies have been steadily declining. It makes me think he still wasn't ready to take over at the time.

The positive is that unlike the Malthouse/Buckley apprenticeship, Roos has stated that he wants to stay at Melbourne at the end of his coaching tenure which means he can continue to mentor Ling in a different role.

Still, I'm not sure what has got Roos and the club so excited about Ling. I guess in Roos we trust.

Mate ask anyone from Geelong footy club if cam ling would be a coach and you will have your answer, I met Joel Corey a few months back and asked and he couldn't speak highly enough of him

Much prefer a Ling type personality than an angry ant like the Scott's, Neeld, Watters etc.

Usually these types implode and leave a mess in their wake. Clarkson seems one of the few that get away with it.

I think Clarkson gets away with it because he has the slightest bit if charisma, where the others have none if not the opposite.

All Ling has on the board is "good bloke" and "positive" on his CV. So did Dean Bailey. So did Neeldy, if you ignore "good" and "positive".

Ling was by far the better player and it's an insult to compare the two even if it is as potential coaches.

Maxwell couldn't win a one on one against an Aus kicker.

The Buckley and Malthouse scenario is vastly different, as Malthouse reluctantly handed over the reigns and stepped away.

Roosy is eagerly handing over the position, but also keen to see the successor flourish, and will stick around to offer the support that sees that happen.

That's a little nugget of info we didn't know, as I thought he had only met with Roos and some of the FD. Makes things more interesting to say the least.
