Caro on 3AW was pretty adamant that he has or nearly signed with the dees as an assistant coach.

As an assistant coach, it doesn't mean he is the coach in waiting. If he wants to get into coaching then why wouldn't he want to spend a year or two under Roos to kick it off.

Would be fantastic in terms of experience to add to your CV, getting to witness first hand a master coach fundamentally building a culture/club from the ground up, working on development of different players over the list and helping underperforming players get the best out of themselves, I think it would be a great result for both Ling and the MFC

If Lingy comes (thank heavens we can put a 'y' after his surname, ) I want him to bring Steven Wells with him.

Will never happen.

Wells has no desire to leave Geelong and has been offered massive contracts in the past.

He's not in it to get rich. He's just happy with his own lot.

I wouldn't bet on Lingy coming on board as the annointed Senior Assistant for the Succession Plan. More likely to just be an Assistant. Who better to learn under than Roos. I would be amazed if he gets the nod. He's got no coaching experience at all.

I have coached at Junior level for quite a few years and believe me even at that level there is a hell of a difference being an Assistant to being the person going out there to address the players and actually run the show. This of course would be ten times more so with AFL. You wouldn't have a clue if you had what it takes to even put up your hand until you'd been an Assistant for a few years. Clearly hasn't worked for Hird and Voss jumping in with no prior.

Would be strange for Roos to take on Lingy with no prior experience. He just couldn't know if he will work or not. Whereas Kirky has been doing it very successfully for several years now. Last year to a GF and probably this year as well. Plus he comes from the same philosophy and background. Fits the position too well for me not to be the pick if he wants it.

For a club that is 'one wrong step away from disaster' it would surprise me if Roos went down this path. Considering we employed Roos to settle the club and shift away the spotlight -this would turn the heat back on the club. I like the idea of Ling in an Assistant role, perhaps as midfield coach and bring in someone else to help out. Still like the idea of someone with good experience at the highest level, but cannot see anyone else out there with a 'defend first' mentality similar to Roos.

I think it matters little if he is the anointed one IF we are a smart football club.

I have repeatedly said that succession plans in business are not set in stone and I am hoping that we take the same philosophy. If the successor is not up to it - you go to plan B.

It is true that you don't know how a person will transition from an assistant to a head coach - Neeld being the perfect example however I would hope that after two years that whoever is selected as the next coach will get the Roos tick of approval at the end of his next two year apprenticeship - "I have every confidence that A B or C, after the last two years as my understudy will make the transition to head coach" or conversely "After two years I am not convinced that A B or C is quite ready so I will stay on for another 2 years and further educate the assistant" or " "After two years I am convinced that A B or C is not cut out to be a head coach - I have instructed the MFC to look outside for a new coach".

The idea that you anoint a successor but after his assisting period, even though you are unsure of him having the right stuff to make it as head coach, you plough on anyway is hopefully something that someone, with the abundance of grey matter of Roos, would not allow to happen.

That's the key unknown for me. I used to be in the same boat as you on this but now I am not so sure.

Especially if the likes of Roos is going to stay around in a Director of Coaching capacity.

Still think Kirk is in the box seat. Doubt it would be a past coach, perhaps Ratten would be the only possibility.

It would make sense if Lingy comes on board at the end of the current year for contracted players/coaches. ?october 1st.

This would get him involved with the draft, the current group during preseason and may have some influence on free agents etc.

You would be able to assess whether he is the chosen one after a period of time, i think he could really fast track our improvement if he was at the club during preseason

I really like Scott burns his done his time been close to a senior job a couple of times. I'd also throw in Simon Goodwin think his similar to burns I'd be happy if roos and Co thought either were suitable. Ling and kirk not so sure especially Ling hasn't had any coaching experience. Obviously I trust roos judgements he won't want to get this wrong as being inside the club knows we can't afford to go backwards

About a year and a half.

Prior to that he'd done some coaching in North America and had undertaken various self study etc into coaching and what makes teams/players tick etc
