McDonald's not out of contract is he?

Tom is talking to Melbourne but we are not in discussions about a new contract yet. There are no issues between Tom and Melbourne, but he just wants to play and worry about helping Melbourne win games of football without worrying about talking about contracts at this stage.

I am surprised that nobody has mentioned Jamar at 31 years of age? Certainly he is playing well at the moment but how much longer have we got? Personally i would keep Fitzpatrick taking a long range view!

Jamar is worth keeping until his play really shows he's finished because you can't find that many above average rucks out there. You need 3 each year and our 3 are Jamar, Spencer and Gawn. King is miles off as a rookie. Fitzpatrick will only ever be a second ruck I think. He's a long way from a starting ruck at AFL level. I think his status is irrelevant to Jamar. He gets a leg up in value from Clark retiring though.

Keep Jamar, when the time comes and he really is finished (likely after 2015) we will have a really good understanding of Spencer and Gawn and whether we need to trade aggressively or not.

Nicholson is gone.

Byrnes also.

Clark retired.

I don't expect Blease to stay.

Tapscott has run out of time.

Strauss borderline, but his kicking may keep him in for 1 more go around.

Evans on thin ice.

Agree Barry should be delisted and rookied.

Fitzpatrick to stay.

Spencer to stay.

McKenzie to stay.

Jetta should get an upgrade if he can maintain his form in the backline - this would make it hard to keep Strauss.

Georgiou to stay a rookie.

King stays as rookie.

Harmes potential upgrade.

We should end up with approx 5-6 spots on the list to fill through the draft and trades.

Another young KPP, a couple of tall mids, maybe a ruckman and some blistering pace.

I'd upgrade Georgiou before Harmes.

Harmes is a long-term project and won't play much seniors this year or next.

As a matter of interest, is there a time limit on Westrupp? That is, are we forced to make a decision at the end of the year about whether to keep him?

Its time the club made a hard decision on Mckenzie.

Even though he gets alot of possesions every week for the twos, his capabilities at AFL level are limited.

Is he the type of Player Roos needs, im not so sure.

I think people are pretty much spot on in the above. We have a raft of players treading water at Casey who really aren't pushing hard for a senior spot right now. All of them have to consider themselves in the firing line. It's really going to depend on which of them can get their act together and start putting pressure on the senior group. At the moment Blease seems to be doing that, and Jordie is racking up the disposals when he's allowed to hunt the ball instead of tagging someone, but he still needs to be better with his use. None of the others are really showing much that would get them retained.

He doesn't have that option. We can choose not to offer him a contract, but if he decides to leave when we have made him an offer it's off to the draft.

I know that. I just simplified it for brevity.

What I mean is, (if Blease is OOC - unsure of his contract status) we will probably do 1 of 2 things: re-sign Blease or delist him.

I can't imagine any other clubs wanting him in a trade, since if we're offering him up for trade it probably means we've given up, in which case they could sign him for free as a FA once we've delisted him.

No club would ask for him, unless as steak knives.

If we delist him, he goes where he wants. If they want him.

If we want to keep him, without a steep climb in performance, he will not likely get much.

He could hold out for more, in which case we'd likely say "goodluck on your journey mate" and he'd be free to sign anywhere as a delisted FA.

And Richmond are desperately bereft of pace, so they'll be hunting for whatever they can get.

Honestly, as far as I'm concerned, they are free to him.

at the risk of upsetting the team harmony & culture of togetherness, & of developing our own from within, I wouldn't trade/delist any of our senior rucks at this point, Unless one wanted to go elsewhere.

..... but if one wasn't putting in the effort, & the players thought he wasn't following team values, then that may be a different thing, where one could be let go.

for now from how I see it, all of our rucks have talents that are useful & can grow, & I would not sack anyone of them. IF, we can afford an extra ruck? maybe a goldstein type?

.... who knows, maybe the Russian would like a new 2 year contract elsewhere? his last contract season is 2015, so we won't extend that. he may want to leave for a new 2 Yr deal somewhere.

A player can only be an RFA after his 8th year at a club.

Tom McDonald was drafted in the 2010 draft. This is his 4th season.

I can't believe people want to cut Barry. He was still a teenager as of 2 months ago and was very skinny when drafted last year. From what I read on the VFL reviews he seems to have plenty of run and enthuaism and is learning the craft. I still expect a fair bit from him.

I wouldnt put him in the same bracket as Strauss/Blease/Tappy who have 4 years on our list more than him!

The issue with Barry is how many good players can't get more than a dozen possessions in the VFL in their second year? An underdone Salem got 32 in his first full game in the midfield. Gysberts got 25 plus a week from the start.

Possessions aren't everything but when you are playing half back/wing/half forward you want to find a fair bit of the footy.

Those other guys have all stagnated since their early years. It looks like they've found their level as players. No doubt Barry has improvement in him but he'll need to improve so much to make it. And he's apparently very fit and has good GPS numbers at VFL level so it's not like he's the type who you need to get fit first. Sure he has to put on weight to reach his peak but that should be more for AFL level, being slight shouldn't hurt him too much at VFL level.

If he improves throughout the year I think he'll get another year. If he doesn't he's rightly questioned.

thanks for that Machsy, I'm not interested much in all the law changes they keep making. I find the off-field rules a turnoff. with all the RFA & UFA's & WTF's.

If Blease is out of contract, I expect him to opt out and go to Richmond as a delisted FA.

They just got rid of Nahas, who is no good but still a more useful footballer than Blease has been. So I agree, typical Richmond move, and if they don't snap him up, they'll surely try to recycle Tapscott.

I honestly reckon our midfield is so much better without him actually in it. He gives away so many free kicks and his only opportunities at this club was to provide a tagging opportunity. Which is now filled by players such as Cross and Nathan Jones with a massive ROI. Mckenzie is slow and a liability and clutters that extra spot we could use for a quality midfielder who has the ability to win clearances.

They're actually taking a teaching view with Barry, from what I have read about his efforts.

I think they must see some attributes in his natural potential, & are trying to teach him to play the right way. I reckon this is long overdue re our developing of our players.

We've been so poor at developing our boys successfully, for such a long time.

I see what you're saying but I don't see Barry as a true midfielder like Salem that will rack up 30+ even when he is at his peak. I see him more of a Lewis Jetta type that has speed, skill and will come in and out of games. Disposals aren't everything and as Go the biff mentioned, he is being used as a run-with player to learn the defensive side of the game before getting his chance. Barry will be a player!

I'd imagine Roos will want to top up again on midfield talent that has been in the system. Similar to Tyson.

We've identified recruiters who know what they are doing, a coach and support coaches who know what they're doing so identifying, recruiting and developing talent will mean there is no need to try and squeeze the limited ability the blokes who just haven't come on have. No matter how hard they try.

Agree with everything, but this. He's too slow and a poor decision maker. Given everything you've said above, it's time for an upgrade.
