OK, so we all know about his deficiencies including lack of leg speed and the fact that his delivery doesn't match that of Sam Mitchell who's also no speedster. I agree with those assessments and don't see him as a long term answer to our midfield woes where we need a massive infusion of class.

But the question still hangs in the air about why he wasn't given a game late in the season after he was elevated off the rookie list?

This was especially so after that game against the Bendigo Gold when, despite suffering a knock and coming off the ground in the third quarter and then being rested for a good part of the last, he still got an outstanding 51 touches. You could say it was the poor opposition but we had other midfielders on the ground that day and they were all overshadowed by Magner.

I can't see how it would have hurt to have had his bigger body in the engine room at Adelaide or during the second quarter against the Dogs at Etihad where we're swamped in the stoppages at the centre of the ground.

It wasn't as if the club was going places at that particular time of the year.

I don't think you can ever disregard the predicted outcome when it comes to picking AFL players. The opportunity and the predicted outcome from those making the selections go hand in hand. Since they're in charge of the team's performance and are held to account for it, it's their call on who they give opportunities to; why would they pick him if they didn't believe he would add anything?

I agree with that also, and wasn't necessarily disappointed when he wasn't picked. The specific difference was that our performances were so dire, particularly in the midfield, that to NOT give the best performing senior listed player in the 2's a go, was most definitely odd.
