I think Colin Garland would be a good choice for captain, Jones is a great onfield leader title of not and is improving every year, if something aint broke don't fix it

but Garland is ultra consistant, plays his role for the team week in week out, great on and off field leader

either Garland or Jones unless we attract a big name player somehow.

Exactly. Too many people on here think that being the best player makes you the captain. It's a crock. Being the most inspirational person is what makes you the captain. Whoever makes everyone else play better is the right choice.

As a captain, I would hate it if people judged me on my speech at the B+F, especially since I will be in Europe this October...

Roughy has overtaken Buddy, for what it's worth.

Conversely, I don't get the argument that we shouldn't risk Jones' impact as a player by giving him the responsibility as captain. Just because it seems to have impacted on the youngest captain in the history of the game doesn't mean it will do the same to a seasoned campaigner. Seems to be walking on eggshells.

Jones is the best on field leader. Easily. To me that is a heavily weighted consideration when selecting a captain, moreso for a club in our position. If he has the sniffles during a speech, I couldn't give a stuff. He demonstrates heart felt desire to make the club great when he speaks publicly, that's enough for me.

Paul Roos was interviewed on 5AA this afternoon. Excellent interview - I guess no one is surprised. He went over some old ground but also introduced new material. Indicates that Jade Rawlings is staying on, and his son Tyler, is going through the list for him!

If nothing else, Roos is so engaging, he will be an PR person for the club.

Surely you don't mean B Grade in the league? He averaged 17 touches.and kicked 9 goals for the year.

No way on earth I'd be selecting Trengove as captain ahead of Grimes. Mysterious injuries or not, ever since he's been captain he's gone backwards in his development.

Perhaps it's his kicking that is imprinted firmly on my conscious? Those stats are surprising, but don't tell the full story.

I wouldn't have either of them as captain, mate. I'd look at Jones. I'd say someone like Dawes, but he can't stay on the park for long enough. Whereas, Jones is durable and has improved his decision making in the past two years, therefore his disposal has undoubtedly increased in efficiency. I'd have Trengove and Grimes in the leadership group though.

Captaincy comes down to leadership imo... Look at some of the more recent captains... Tom Harley, Cameron Ling, Nick Maxwell, Nathan Van Berlo etc... People wouldnt be calling them A grade players but they are A grade individuals.. I think Grimes is among them as an A grade person who will give his all for the club and then some.

I agree. I said as much in my post. They have to be reliable players though. When Grimes isn't injured, he tends to turn it over indiscriminantly by foot. I love Grimes' passion for the contest and his obvious love for the club. I understand he has wonderful preparation, I just don't rate him on the footy field yet.

If Dawes has the respect of the players IMO he is the logical choice as captain.

I had a chat with Brad Green at the end of last year. He dispelled any notion that Trengove has a groin injury. He also said that Neeld was playing him totally out of position. He said he was a natural ball winning inside mid but Neeld was playing him as a high half forward which was a position that he didn't have the pace for.

I'm interested that Roos has already endorsed Trenners as a centre square mid. If he's successful in that position we could improve more quickly than we think.

I suggest you go rewatch the games he played before injuring his shoulder against Carlton this year. I think you'll find he was in our best every week.

Grimes is a top bloke and a good leader by all accounts but I don't think he'd get a game at the top clubs. With due respect Chook, even you would have been named in Melbourne's best earlier this season.

I think he probably is the best 'physical leader' at the club (as far a personality goes he seems really smart, great talker, sensible and a hard worker)

First game I saw him play you could just see he was a leader - has a massive presence on the ground (no talking size).

Having said that he needs to be able to get on the field and perform so not captain next year (unless he has an absolute blinder of a preseason).

From what I have heard Grimes is a natural leader who is respected by his peers and we are lucky to have him as our captain. I'd be interested to know who else in our squad were captains as juniors apart from Trengove. Remember that Grimes was captain of the Northern Knights and both the Victorian Metro under-16 and under-18 representative sides.

For me though his most impressive junior leadership achievement was that he won the Ben Mitchell Medal as the peer-voted leader of the elite AIS-AFL Academy in 2007, ahead of more heralded players such as Trent Cotchin and Daniel Rich. This medal is given to the boy who ties his on-field abilities most tightly to what he does, and who he is. The following is from an Emma Quayle article a few years ago...

"At the start of the AIS program, each of the 30 boys is assigned a character trait, and asked to think for the next nine months about which of their new teammates lives it. Their trait might be versatility, care or patience; they might be looking for someone with humour, voice or versatility. They can interpret the traits in any way they choose and, at the end of the nine months, they must stand up at the front of the room, and explain their three, two and one votes. Each year, their coach, Alan McConnell, is intrigued to hear what they come up with. "Each boy has his own take on it, and experiences that have influenced how he feels," he said. There is no doubt in my mind that Jack Grimes has the character and values that we want in our captain. He turns 25 next year and would have matured eyond his years after having experienced probably the toughest induction into captaincy in the history of the AFL. Jack could well become our own version of a Brett Kirk or a Lenny Hayes.

That makes sense. The players would, you would think, know where other players should play, as they are at the coalface and know each others' abilities far better than we do from afar.

I think Trengove will turn out to be an extremely good player for us - but his apparent lack of form in recent years has puzzled me.

Perhaps for captain, but we are so bereft of good leaders that he and Clark were both in the LG before playing a game.

As Roos said, you have got to work with what you have.

Leading Teams will do something very similar with the captaincy to what brought Grimes and Trengove in, and like I say every year, the captain should be worked out every February before the season.
