I just adore Jonesy but I don't think he is the second best clearance mid from the centre in the AFL. May have gotten the second most but thats only as there are zero other midfielders to swap with him so he competes in there more than probaby any other midfielder.

He will be even better when he has some support around him so he can get a few cheapie possessions each week instead of relying on getting his own pill 24/7

IF the facts are that he has the second highest number of clearances, without the luxury of outside mids who can accept his clearances, then surely he has the potential to be not only a high accumulator of clearances but a top rate mid in his own right when he gets the necessary support.

Those numbers are quite incredible considering the solo nature of his work.

Rory Sloane wants to come home according to someone who played with him at Tecoma/Upwey.

Adelaide probably wouldn't mind a second rounder for him.

I wouldnt discount someone like Brad Sewell either, we need a leader type as well.

is he a free agent?

he'd add some much needed grunt and contested ball style that we need

It's amazing how quickly Hawthorn and Sydney players can get kicks and handpasses off. So many of our midfielders take about three weeks to kick the ball, players like Jack and Mitchell are just so quick with their hands and feet which means they can cope under immense pressure becuase they rarely get caught.

Pick 2 for Adams and pick 10 pick 10 for Rory Sloane

That's a gold result without a pp

Would you swap pick 1 PP for Ollie Wines? I would. I reckon Port would.

Absolutely not

Roos could potentially attract Dale Thomas? he'd be brilliant

I can' t see us getting a star mid in a trade, maybe a couple of good ones but not a star.

I think we will have to draft our star mids and improve Viney and Toumpas and Blease.

The Dons got Goddard through free agency. Why can't we get something similar? We now have all of a sudden a very attractive destination for them. Something we can sell. I would not be surprise if we got some pretty good standard recruits from this eg Sewell, Thomas,

the best way i could see this working is if we are going to trade pick 2 to adelaide, then we would be getting sloane and another 1 and maybe a late draft pick.

so i imagine something like sloane and mckernan (who wants to leave) and pick 30 something. we offload pick 30 something and mckernan to a club like carlton or someone who wants a forward and get a mid/forward off them?

or the real best option will be trading pick 2 for dale thomas, who if he decides he wants to leave would be an amazing option to trade for, which would mean we could draft daniel cross and that would be helpful also

How about getting Scotty Thompson back from Adelaide? Seems like a good idea to me...

We've got an early draft pick which Essendon might want. But Essendon's tradeable players are likely to be key position players like Gumbleton or Pears. So which team with excess mids and a shortage of talls wants to join the party for a three way swap? I would have thought GWS, Bulldogs or maybe Carlton?

The blues have a chronic shortage of quality big forwards. I reckon they will be after Fitz. We might trade him for the right mid, or small forward. They question is which one? Betts? Garlett? I think either would be a fair trade for Fitz although I would be sorry to see him go just as he is getting his health right and is finding form. We do have though plenty of quality tall forwards if we can keep them on the park.

Cross is finished , he is bulldog through and through and if there was any decent footy left they would have kept him. In short, we want way better than him. Been a good player for sure but he's done. IMO Sloan, Adams, Swallow far better options and there could well be others.

Any GWS or GCS who want to come home?

The lack of midfield depth has long been the crux of the problem for the club and yet, apart from the now ill-fated (for us) 2009 draft, our recruiting was never really concentrated on this area. We never really had a strategy of trying to prise out good midfielders from other clubs and we therefore, never had the opportunity to benefit as the Swans did from recruiting players such as Josh Kennedy and Ben McGlynn from Hawthorn along with Shane Mumford in the one draft in Roos' last season as coach.

For the record, Kennedy was traded to the Swans along with McGlynn for 2009 AFL Draft picks 39, 46 and 70. They also got Mumford for a song from Geelong which had salary cap issues and he was a more than adequate replacement for Darren Jolly who was returning home anyway. In return for Jolly, the Swans got picks 14 and 46 (on traded as above). Pick 14 got them Lewis Jetta to go with their pick 6 (Gary Rohan).

Fair drafting and not a #1 or 2 pick in sight.

This is what we should be expecting from drafting under Roos. A priority pick (even with the string of having to trade it) would be the icing on the cake and allow Roos to commence the reconstruction of our midfield in the clever and aggressive manner that's required in our situation.

I agree let's target someone who can give us 5 yrs service or more. I'm over short term fixes.

If we got picks 1 and 3 or 1 and 2 Would Roos just trade one of those picks and keep the other for a young gun mid?? I dont mind the idea of trading away for a star midfielder but i would like to keep one for a young mid.

Wouldn't be bad, but the reason he left was due to him wanting to go home and live in Adelaide.

Yeah, well I can give you a very good reason why he might want to live elsewhere. He should be talked to.

That Pick 2/3 for Adams and Pick 10.. Pick 10 for Rory Sloane is a stroke of Genius actually, and works for both teams.

GWS then have the option to on-trade as well, and Adelaide get back into the 1st round of the draft!

My Ideal would be to get 2 young ready to mature mids from other clubs, to return to Melbourne, > from {Gaff, Adams, Selwood} +++

& 2 elder Mids... we don't have to spend Big Picks on, Eg Scotty Thompson, running inside outside type who can play anywhere (free agency), give him a big short contract $$$$$$.

& possibly work a deal for Brad Sewell, contracted, but we need his hard leadership & inside General-ship.

also maybe Paul Chapman...

2 of the above, but the criteria for me needs to be about tough hardness... to work-out 'our culture issues', & leading our kids with fortified uncompromising courage.

.... this is where I have gone-off DelSanto since the start of the year. very good player, but I think could be harder in clinches.

imo, whilst we are in 'a culture transition', I'd like to see us stay away from these types for 2 years or so.

only head over the ball, contested footy, one on one types for my side.

.

I seem to recall he was having issues similar to Jolly... not getting games at one stage, etc.

& I still have the feeling from reports at that time he was in no favour of daniher, & his professionalism stood out head & shoulders above our culture. it was so pronounced he looked odd, even ahead of his time.

We just need to convince Adams that MFC is his club of choice we can then play hardball for an unders trade or take him with PSD 2. Our priority pick should be used for the best offer we can get for it and the other used on fresh talent. Roos was a genius at turning others teams players like Kennedy, McGlynn, Richards, Shaw into seriously good players. He now has a whole list with a few exceptions of underperformers to get the most out of.

So it works out as pick 2 for Adams and Rory Sloane. Talk about immediate midfield impact right there.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
