Bombers scandal: charged, <redacted> and <infracted>

This Hardie guy has been possibly the biggest scumbag of the whole sage and thats saying something

The bloke he's trying to protect is a bigger scumbag. In fact if McDevitts comments were so problematic why hasn't Dank complained?

Er ... Perhaps Dank might have a problem fronting up to the Feds with his complaint?

For some time now, the AFL has - quite appropriately - let ASADA take the lead in all aspects of this hideous debacle.

Now Bomber Thompson has reputedly refused to pay the $30k fine.

Others may know better than I - but I assume that Thompson has never signed anything making this a legally enforeceable debt. Even if he has - a long drawn out set of debt collection procedures which Thompson could string out for months/years wouldn't really send out the sort of message the AFL needs to broadcast

Putting this aside ,the AFL has 5 options

1. Call for payment within ,say 7 days, advising that failure to do so will be deemed contempt of competition rules leading to immediate disbarment from all /any AFL related positions for an indefinite period

2. Call for payment within, say 7 days, advising that the Commission will consider appropriate sanctions for non-payment at its next meeting

3. Call for payment within say 7 days advising that the Commission will await the outcome of ASADA' s action against the players before determining appropriate sanctions for non payment

4. Call for payment within say 7 days advising that the Commission will await the outcome of Hird' s appeal before determining appropriate sanctions for non-payment

5. Make no public statement indicating that it is a private matter between Thompson and itself.

As it has already been leaked to the media - and Thompson can comment at any time - Option 5 isn't really an option at all. As the fine was for bringing the game into disrepute the ongoing ASADA enquiry - and Hirds's appeal - is beside the point

If the AFL wishes to assert itself as a strong body operating under a set of rules agreed by all its member bodies, then surely Option 2 is unnecessarily weak and indecisive.

This leaves only Option 1- strong, clear, reasonable

Thompson may already have decided to step away from the game - and any sanctions will be inconsequential. But the AFL needs to jump in - and withdraw the right before Thompson thumbs his nose at the whole competition - and at the whole investigation.

They have already told him when to pay - why give him 7 days?

He is non compliant with AFL directives which surely means he could not be registered to partake in AFL in any official capacity.

Plus penalty interest ;-)

he also has removed himself from the afl coaches association a while back

Bombas behaviour is bizarre. Raises the possibility of a significant mental health issue.

Unless you are a medical professional that knows Bomber personally, it is your post that is bizarre.

yaaawwwnnn! I have mistakenly ventured onto the Essednon website?

His speech at the best and fairest was odd and his inability to let go of the coaching position when he said previously he didn't want it was a dramatic turn around. The Suns quickly withdrew their interest - some sort of alarm bells were ringing.

He has withdrawn from the Coaches association, put the AFL seriously offside and has not spoken to Hird for a month without making it clear if he will stay with the Dons or not. His Press conference performances were entertaining but eccentric.

He has really isolated himself and looks to have no chance of getting a football dept position anytime soon.

There is something not right.

I can't work out how Bomber escapes censure for his involvement in the filthy supplements episode.

By all means Hird should be banned from AFL. So should Bomber.

Its karma that Bomber is not positioned anywhere in the AFL.

His contempt for his lightweight fine of $30,000 is neither here nor there.

He should take his tortured soul elsewhere.

He can take the good Dr Reid with him too.

Totally agree with that assembly of facts

Fair point on the 7 days . Just reckon one final warning is consistent with their silence on the matter as Friday's deadline came and went.

He is most definitely eccentric - and rebellious,Given the bizarre behavior that has gone on around him over the past couple of years. I'm not sure we can say much more.

To me, the issue is not Thompson's behavior - but the AFL's reaction to a refusal to accept sanction. Can anyone - for any reason - snub the AFL without a strong unhesitating response?

At a stretch, I guess I could give the AFL until the day after Cup Day to react - but not a day longer.

Next time you click onto a thread it might pay you to read the title.

Bomber has always been an eccentric. Maybe he just doesn't give a stuff about the AFL anymore. That would explain leaving the CA. He's said before he would like to walk away, and he's a wealthy man with significant business interests outside footy. I've been told by an Ess person he doesn't want to pay the fine on principle and he's had enough of Hird. To claim he has mental health issues based upon your post above is drawing a long bow and disrespectful.

Quite right. Like many people, he's just not addicted to the game any more.

He didn't 'claim' he merely said it raised the possibility. Long bows are the stuff of Demonland and not much respect is shown to a lot of our players, so a tiny bit of disrespect for an oppo coach doesn't worry me much.

Splitting hairs, but quite correct sue. Not many of our players will finish their careers as a champion player, a premiership captain and multiple flag coach. If they did, I don't think too many reasonable people would show disrespect.

To say someone may have a mental health issue is not disrespectful and it was meant to be.

Anyway I probably shouldn't have posted my view but I am involved in the treatment of many such people and his behaviour raised some red flags.

I always get concerned when people isolate themselves - I hope he does have some supports.

Do you know him personally? Have you treated him? Or are you raising the mental health flag based upon media spin and reporting which is rarely balanced or fully accurate? That is disrespectful. To Bomber, to mental health professionals and to people with mental health issues.

Not that I would doubt an Essendon source, but if Bomber is standing on principle, it's surprising that he hasn't let this be more widely known, if only to glean whatever minimal public support may still be out there. Or maybe he's just gone loopy.

he's still a wacko

seems to go with success for some - the plumber, bomba, pagan, mad mick

  • NON-MFC: Round 09

Round 9 kicks off out west with the Dockers hosting a Collingwood side resting several stars. Fremantle need to make a statement on their home deck after some disappointing form on the road, while the Magpies will be keen to maintain their Top 2 position. Friday night sees a must-win clash between two sides desperate to stay in touch with the eight. St Kilda have shown glimpses while Carlton are clinging to relevance after a flat start to the season. Saturday’s twilight game at Marvel pits the Bombers against a struggling Sydney outfit. Essendon can’t afford another close match against a lower-ranked side, while the Swans risk sliding down the ladder even further. Up in Darwin, the fourth-placed Suns will look to extend their stay in the top four. The Bulldogs have hit their stride with three big wins on the trot and will be very keen to consolidate on their momentum. The always fiery Showdown looms as pivotal for both clubs. Adelaide are eyeing a spot in the Top 4 with a win, while Port Adelaide’s season could slip away if they drop another game and fall further behind the pack. Sunday begins with a yawn fest between Richmond and West Coast. The Tigers need to bank the points to stay clear of the bottom two, while the Eagles are still chasing their first win of the year. The Giants face one of the league’s toughest road trips as they travel to GMHBA Stadium to face the Cats. With GWS at risk of a third straight loss, Geelong will be eager to consolidate their position inside the eight and start their climb up the ladder. The round wraps up with the top-of-the-table Lions heading to Ninja Stadium to take on the second-last Roos. The Lions should easily take care of the struggling Roos who might be powerless against the best in the comp. Who are you tipping and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • PREVIEW: Hawthorn

Melbourne and Hawthorn who face off against each other this week have more in common than having once almost merged and about to wear a blue jumper with a red v triangle and an embroidered picture of a bird on the front. They also share the MCG as their main home ground, their supporters are associated with the leafy suburbs of Melbourne and in recent times, James Frawley graced the colours of both teams. Even more recently, both have bounced back from disastrous five game losing streaks to start off a season. Of course, the Hawks turned their bounce into a successful leap from the bottom of the ladder into a finals appearance, making it to the semifinals in 2024 and this year, they’re riding high in third place on the AFL table. The Demons are just three games into their 2025 bounce back, and are yet to climb their way out of the bottom four although they are sitting a game and percentage out of the top eight. However, with the current sportsbet odds of $3.90 to win this week’s encounter, it seems a forlorn hope that their upward progression will continue much longer.

  • REPORT: West Coast

On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.
