And the Essendon players can only look on from the sidelines now and dream of what might have been.

Maybe there'll be a few phone calls trying to contact the ASADA helpline this afternoon.

Whilst there's nothing officially on the table you'd think this was still a possibility as it's within the code.......

Makes you all warm and fuzzy to know the head of the game has a full and complete grasp of all things!!

At 3.14Pm bb I am awarding the comment of the day.

Yep a regular Rocket scientist

On a different note see Bomba Thompson is the only coach not to forsake his development allowance to support the coaches association. Pretty mean spirited I would have thought. Not sure I want him at the club as seems likely.

did he give any reasons?

did he give any reasons?

self evident

Not that I could see. Apparently didn't go over well. It was $5000. The coaches association is almost broke.

is !!

To be fair, bomber does owe the afl 30k!

Thatd put a dint in anyone's skyrocket

Not if you have made $30million on a property deal.

Not if you have made $30million on a property deal.

and its his own bloody fault to boot ( owing the 30k)

Despite denials by ASADA of back room deals offered to Essendon players, the story won't go away. Greg Baum of the Age isn't impressed ~ Bans bargains, bans going cheap

Unfortunately, ASADA now look ridiculous. Here's three weeks Cronulla but Essendon, we are still going after you...well, sort of.

May just be the difference between cooperating and stone-walling.

Sue, I now don't think so. We have the ludicrous situation where a two year penalty for a drug violation has been reduced to roughly three weeks. Cooperation or not, the organisation in charge of ridding sport of performance drug use should not be making deals that are contrary to what they should be trying to achieve. I can't stand them but if I were Essendon I'd be bemused at whats been served up.

I think the thing is the damage to reputation and the negative publicity is a punishment in it's own, the club cops the cheats tag as do the players and that doesn't wash off,

I don't think Essendon will be offered any deals because they have been blatantly trying to cheat the system to get off on a technicality

Sir Paul, I'm not trying to point score but the trouble is there are Olympians wHo have suffered from loss of reputation plus time out of the sport. As pointed out in a couple of this mornings articles, this must be very hard for them to reconcile.

Yeah, I think there needs to be a consistant harsh punishment personally, 1 year if they cooperate starting at week 1 of the next season, 2 if they don't cooperate

You are right - I was being a bit tongue in cheek. Backdated bans with 3 weeks to go look ridiculous no matter how much cooperation was involved.

Though I could imagine someone getting off extremely lightly if they had fingered a Mr Big as part of their cooperation. I haven't followed the Cronulla thing closely, but I don't recall a Mr Big being in trouble and in any case many fingers have got a light penalty.

As one of the Olympians observed, this has as much to do about revenue as anything else. And I wonder how much the AFL has muddied the waters to ensure prosecution is iffy at best. Now that Gill the Ponce McLaughlin is in charge you can guarantee this is going nowhere IMO .

  • REPORT: Carlton

I am now certain that the decline in fortunes of the Melbourne Football Club from a premiership power with the potential for more success to come in the future, started when the team ran out for their Round 9 match up against Carlton last year. After knocking over the Cats in a fierce contest the week before, the Demons looked uninterested at the start of play and gave the Blues a six goal start. They recovered to almost snatch victory but lost narrowly with a score of 11.10.76 to 12.5.77. Yesterday, they revisited the scene and provided their fans with a similar display of ineptitude early in the proceedings. Their attitude at the start was poor, given that the game was so winnable. Unsurprisingly, the resulting score was almost identical to that of last year and for the fourth time in succession, the club has lost a game against Carlton despite having more scoring opportunities.

  • CASEY: Carlton

The Casey Demons smashed the Carlton Reserves off the park at Casey Fields on Sunday to retain a hold on an end of season wild card place. It was a comprehensive 108 point victory in which the home side was dominant and several of its players stood out but, in spite of the positivity of such a display, we need to place an asterisk over the outcome which saw a net 100 point advantage to the combined scores in the two contests between Demons and Blues over the weekend.

  • POSTGAME: Carlton

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.
