Yeah but he's had at least 2 completely decent preseasons since. I don't expect him to be elite but he's barely up to scratch. There's also to fact that he's pretty ordinary at winning any of his own ball as well which is just as damning.

Don't get me wrong, I completely agree that he is far below a pass mark, I just think there are legit reasons for it unlike other players. I still believe his AFL career is absolutely in the balance - if he doesn't lift very soon he could be trade bait or no longer required. I do hope he gets there though.

WYL, I used to appreciate your posts, your passion, even your insight, but you've turned into a directionless ranter.

Have to agree. I like WYL's passion, but the way he's carrying on here you'd think Trengove switched jumpers at half time.

If Sylvia, Grimes and Trengove attacked the ball like Viney does we would win more games than we lose, that kids an animal, has to get a rising star nom this week,

I think this is a stance few are game to exude. I dont particularly disagree.

Whilst there may well be a myriad of reasonable excuses for his form they in the end are just that, excuses. Please dont readers return fire with "reasons' for there is no 'reason" in this stance. If he is fit , he takes the critique , if he is not, then he ought not be playing this level for it over taxes him without really providing bang for buck.

He did , I repeat play an OK game but not one of his real ability.

If he is such dire need of an uninterupted preseason then maybe he ought to be running around the less arduous Scorps until hes ready to step up to he proper level

Exactly.

Supporters have been belted around the head by this club for so long so that there expectations are clouded by the ordinary.

WYL, you are so far out of reality it's laughable.

Your conceptions of what should or shouldn't happen in this world beggar belief.

Trengove should be kicking 2-3 goals per quarter, and if he doesn't, he's not a leader? Insanity.

We 'should' have beaten Brisbane? No. Geelong 'should' have beaten Adelaide. We 'could' have beaten Brisbane. Could. Not should. Because we're the second-worst side in the competition. That's just what we are.

I haven't seen the whole game, but from what I've seen, it was another sign of improvement. We won the clearances, and were competitive in inside 50s, tackles and contested possessions. We also went a player down in the third, which hurt our rotations, a killer in Darwin.

People on here need to accept where we are and the amount of change that is capable of being achieved through a season with a sub-standard list. The pre-season is where we're going to need to see improvement, but we're actually doing quite well to pick ourselves up off the rock bottom we hit with Neeld.

I think trenners is doing alright, not great but he is in our best 22 for a few reasons,

Next years coach with a bit more experience will be able to identify better the strengths of the players, and build a game plan from scratch that plays to the overall strength of the core group, i think this was Neeld's biggest fault, we aren't Collingwood, that plan won them a flag but we are 40+ totally different blokes, trying to find our feet, i think a more geelong like style suits us better,

all things considered we did about what most would have hoped and expected against the Lions, would have been nice to win, but they are probably a better side in a few ways and deserved the result.

After watching the geelong game today, and seeing them slow and very ungeelong like in the last qtr. I wondered if the game last week in the very wet and heavy conditions affected them? They had one more day to recover and wernt a rotation down as MFC was.

Did we fade in the last qtr in part as a result of last weeks game?

Just a question that had me wondering after watching geelong!

Also, Dean Terlich needs to learn that he's not superman. He continually tries to run through tackles and gets caught. Nathan Jones used to be like that, but has improved, and Terlich needs to take a leaf out of his book.

He also needs to tighten up defensively, it seems his opponents are kicking a few goals against him.

Yeah totally agree, will be a very good quality player if he is able to do that, but i still think he has the capacity to become a good mid if the club chooses to go down that path

You can see when Geelong go off the boil, it's in their defence. They seem to lose interest and start making mistakes, this started to happen in the 3rd q with Harry Taylor in particular. I thought if Adelaide started to get results from their good play all day then Geelong could go down.

Was it last weeks game? I doubt it, we couldn't apply enough pressure for it to be a hard day at the office for them.

Geez I wish I had .000001% of Trengoves ability instead of my excellent key boarding skills.

Lets all take a deep breath and let Trengove have a FULL preseason under a coach who CAN COACH.

What!? Yes, Nathan Jones used to get trashed on here for that. I always said that he must have his own backing and his coaches backing to work on that, by improving his strength and evasive abilities. Lo and behold years later he is very good in this area NOT BECAUSE HE STOPPED DOING IT but because he got BETTER at it. I would like to see Terlich continue to back himself and ultimately become like Jones who can brush off/barge through tackles or earn a free in the process. In the meantime there will be frees against him but it is worth it in the long run

I agree, he has lost that zip and isn't the same player, the captaincy i think was a mistake, Garland might be a better option and Viney in a few years after that, but IF he gets a full pre season and still lacks the ability to impact games, it'll start to get very concerning, he is getting his 20 touches and tackling well, but if he can add 5-10 touches a game to that he will be a fair player, he averaged 14 in his first 6 games back and now averages 20 so maybe by seasons end 25 a game would be a good aim?

i don't expect Trenners to kick 2-3 each quarter. That is laughable to even consider.

But when has he EVER done it.

As a Captain he has to lead.

When has he lifted the side since the sling tackle?

yes as we all know that when you become captain your speed decreases. Neeld should have thought of that.

Neeld was never more than an assistant coach punching above his weight, but there is clearly an issue of some sort that has caused the loss of zip

Titan, I don't often agree with you - but, IMO you are spot on this time.

We met my expectations of improvement last night.

We are coming from behind GWS.

As long as they keep improving, wins will come.

It's not about shelving the idea of taking the game on altogether. It's about learning when to try to break the tackle and when to give the ball off. Jones has learnt this, Terlich needs to.

That time he laid 12 tackles in a match?

You know, last night?

I always find it funny watching people fall over themselves to be 'the one' demanding more than others. Being around a club, you see it every now and then.

We are bad, and we all want to be good.

But you know what comes in between those two realities?

Gradual improvement.

Couldn't care less if you don't see it when it happens, but just know that you are dismissing progress and dismissing reality.

Former means you're a jerk, and the latter means you're psychotic.

I will leave it up to the individual which is worse.

Glad you were entertained.

That is kinda the point though isn't it?

there are alot of forms of leadership, Trenners is captain of a struggling team and a team that at times this year has lacked effort, he sets an example with effort, he works bloody hard and tackles very well, i would consider that a measure of on field leadership

I don't want to see 'improvement'. I don't want 'positives'. I want WINS.

That means I want blood! I want people sacked and players delisted and the perpetrators called to account. I want Presidents and board members to resign, coaches to go and captains demoted.

I WANT SOMETHING BLOODY WELL DONE!

There, that feels better.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
