The Trade/Draft Rumour Mill

Featured Replies

No wonder Tom Scully has deep pockets and short fingers. Think of all the pies he has to buy Dad.

with it now 'highly likely' that pick 2 will be traded, I would surmise that the club have already identified and acted on the player/s they would like at the club next year.

I thought earlier this week that the rumours or lack there of, suggested to me that the 'big fish' had already been landed or close to landed.

Wouldn't be surprised if we have already done a hand shake deal with club x for player y.

Hopefully x = Adelaide and y = Rory Slone

'Y' would need to be player + another pick

yeah I know this is a rumours thread, but seriously when is the last time two clubs traded that much between them in a single trade.

Besides Adams doesn't want a bar of us (basically confirmed by Mahoney), why do people keep bringing him up?

OK, Dylan Shiel & Dom Tyson for P2 & player ?

Assumptions have a way of biting you in the butt but I heard Mahoney and the first thing then went through my head is that the MFC are already way down the track on a player they want and a player the other club will trade for pick 2. (or a deal including pick 2)

See, I didn't get the feeling we were far along with anyone. I reckon the club is still pimping its pick #2 around and hoping someone bites.

Meanwhile, the 20-30 game quote was merely a throw away line from Mahoney, but I reckon at least one of the players on our short list fits into this bracket.

Born 1989 or later and Victorian midfielder at interstate team:

Adelaide: Sloane, Sam Kerridge, David McKay, No first round picks to trade back to us!

Brisbane: Rockliff, Claye Beams (Brissy boy but brother in Vic), Ryan Lester, Patrick Karnezis

Freo: Suban, Sheridan, Mitchie

GC: Prestia, Swallow (WA boy but brother in Vic)

GWS: Taylor Adams, plenty others but no others have expressed any interest

Port: Andrew Moore, Jasper Pittard, Aaron Young

Syd: Hannebery, Lamb, Rohan, Parker

WC: Gaff, Selwood, Shuey, Ash Smith (def)

Sloane, Scott Selwood, Gaff, Hannebery, D. Swallow are the class of the lot. Would be happy with them for pick 2 with something additional for most of those thrown in. A lot of the others on the list are quality players but we'd need something significant to come with them ie first round pick coming the other way.

I would go all of these guys.

Luke Shuey is just the type of player we need.... If only we could squeeze Richard Douglas into that deal!

I would go all of these guys.

Yeah but would ya swap em for pick 2

Roos is going to trade pick 2 for some B grader and win a total of 10 games over his 2 years. Walk away and leave is with a middle of the road list and without a great prospect that we could've got with pick 2. That's my worry.

Viney and Jason Taylor better exert their will on these decisions and Mahoney better stick to administrating and leave the decisions to the big boys.

The club has said that they only see a handful 3-4 players as worthy of pick 2.

I 100% agree with what the club is doing - we need a few good mids aged 22-25 who can come in and have a big impact on our midfield.

There is no reason why we can't get a decent mid with our 2nd round pick or trade for a 10-18 pick. I for one am sick of the hype that comes with drafting a high pick player anyway.

I think if you throw two B-A grade mids in (22-25 years old) plus 1 or 2 mature mids like Cross or younger and it will make a big difference to our team.

I think it is crucial to our development that we get some mids to ease the pressure off the young guys (Viney, Toump, Trengove etc.) and also could very well bring about a competitive culture (we can't go on with the massive thumping's).

I don't think Roos is thinking short term by putting pick 2 on the table - he is thinking long term (development/culture).

Shuey for mine is a big get. He is a wonderful trainer and a great person having met him on numerous occasions through a mutual acquaintance. I know he loves Melbourne and also feels a great debt to the eagles. My thoughts though .. and they're only my thoughts is that he would be open to a trade given west coast is getting a new coach and also the eagles could use pick 2.

Yeah but would ya swap em for pick 2

Ah yes. Well done. :P

It's just an opinion, but Scott Lucas on SEN tonight was talking about trade scenarios, and said he wouldn't trade pick 2 for Rockliff or Shuey, as the rumours go.

His opinion of Aish is that he was "very comfortable that Aish will be at least the equal of those 2" but you run the risk of missing out on a Luke Hodge-like superstar, that gets teams over the line for flags.

I guess the trade-off for us is that we don't have to invest years for him to develop.

It also wasn't discussed the possibility of getting a pick back, which would considerably even up the ledger.

And it wasn't discussed that neither Geelong or Sydney have had a raft of top 5 picks playing in their sides during their recent highly competitive eras (bar Jarrad McVeigh who was pick 5).

We love the rumours!

the extras are bound to be media jocks searching for scoop...lol

It was only towards the end, but it became apparent to me that there's definitely been some productive conversations taking place regarding pick 2. He was put on the spot, hesitated and then was pretty unequivocal that it would be traded.

It didn't strike me as someone just fishing.

Yes unlikely but damn I hope we are talking to port about Wines.

That said it is a good chance GWS will push Mumford to the PSD. If so we are then in the box seat if we can cinvince any players to walk.

Oh damn you caught me!

I have been trying so hard to fit in. Just looking for some sauces!

Ideally you wouldn't trade the pick and you'd expect a pick two player to be a superstar of the game. I'm always against trading top 5 picks for that very reason.

That said, this club isn't in a usual situation. If we're to retain the likes of Jesse Hogan we have to start winning games of footy. Reluctantly I reckon it's the right call. But we better get someone pretty bloody good. And seems as though there'll be a first round pick back in return.

Roos "are" or Roos "is"?

or Roos's lol ^_^

From afl.com.au:

The Giants were forced to re-affirm that exciting midfield prospect Dylan Shiel was a required player after reports he wanted to return to Victoria.

Shiel is contracted for the next two seasons so is unlikely to move although he has attracted interest from several clubs with Melbourne understood to be most keen.

AFL.com.au understands Shiel would be open to a move but the Giants want to retain him.

Shane Savage's future is also not totally clear.

The Hawk played in the 2012 Grand Final but missed selection in the 2013 premiership team. He showed good form with the Hawks through the year and was solid in the finals for the Box Hill Hawks after being dropped for the finals.

Melbourne and the Eagles are understood to be among several clubs interested in talking to Savage if he is seeking further opportunity outside Hawthorn.

He is contracted with the Hawks until the end of 2014 and the 22-year-old is likely to be a required player. He will meet with the club this week.

Both Sheil and Savage would be great pick-ups. Give me Sheil over Adams any day of the week.

My money would be on pick 2 heading to the GCS for Swallow.

He fits the criteria Mahoney was referring to.

A former #1 pick who may not have set the world on fire, but has 3-4 years of fast-tracked development at the Suns. Ready to go.

I think the Suns would probably agree to it too.

well we should try hard, but to me, next year would be preferable.

there are others right now who need our attention,,, then Dylan can come back home into a side thats already in some better shape. Dylan could then be a part of the New Demons brood, who are pushing for Finals footy.

If we could land Rocky this year, that would be a great start.

As I think everyone agrees it is midfield depth that is the killer at the moment. Things could turn quick if that is addressed.

A deal of 2 out for a player plus pick 10-20 makes lots of sense.

Pick 2 could be (and more likely with 2+ seasons of development) silk, but one known quantity and ready to go mid, plus another crack at a midfielder in the 10-20 pick range in what is said to be an even draft from picks 5-30 seems the better outcome.

Could even be going to try and trade the return pick in 10-20 range to an Adelaide (or Essendon depending on ASADA risk) who would probably be desperate to get into the first round of the draft for another known quantity player or two.

Ideal net result for mine would be pick 2 traded for 2 or 3 ready to go best 22 at Melbourne midfielders, keeping in mind right now a best 22 at Melbourne in the midfield is not necessarily best 22 midfielder at their club of origin.

That is all without considering what free agency and PSD#2 could net.

  • DRAFT: The Next Generation

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.
