Lots suggested Strauss and Gysberts were taken way earlier than expected.

you may be right on those three, but the picks they were taken at were in later more speculative region, I was referring to the top 5 more so

plenty of misses from all clubs around those late first round picks

Funny how the clubs that have received probably the lowest number of top 20 picks, Sydney and Geelong, have had the most success. It says a lot about our atrocious recruiting and coaching.

They recruit well and develop well, but IAH Scarlett & Ablett went FS before the changes and both would have been first rounders, I agree if you recruit well you can be set up for 10 years, Geelong basically set themselves up with the 1999 & 2001 drafts

If you read the press at the time Ablett was only rated late first round, early second round. Scarlett was rated much later than that.

That's why a good recruiting team will form their own assessments and not just go along with the heard like we do. It seems as if some just think "big footy" when they are looking at the draft.

Well the title suggests that but the article only states that we asked for "draft assistance". It makes sense that it means a priority pick, but I think until the commission makes a decision, I'm not going to believe something just because the HUN says it.

The article on afl.com.au says the rescue package includes "a combination of picks and finances". Picks, plural.

If they didn't ask you would have to question their competence. I am sure the Saints and Bulldogs will be considering if they ask this year or next.

Reckon the draft picks will come with a lot of conditions ie first AFL is satisfied we are sorted out off field, then they will want the picks to impact our onfield performances straight away - that is their biggest concern and I don't think stockpiling 18 year olds will help us in the short term.

i don't get it, are we asking for a pick regardless of what happens for the rest of the year? if we continue the way we are going doesn't that give us a pick without having to ask for it? conversely, if we happen to win a few more and not meet the criteria do we want a pick anyway? or have i missed the point and priority picks are not supposed to even exist anymore?

That bottom feeder Damien Barrett is very confident we will NOT get a priority pick.

To me, and AD did say that the mention of Picks came at the end of the meeting and was not at the core of our plan, that we are simply getting in early and trying to make sure the AFL doesn't bow to the pressure of flogs like Barrett and co. that say we shouldn't get a pick.

No-one deserves a PP, but we should get one. For the betterment of the competition.

I think what people have issue with is the word 'deserve'...

Not deserves, no one deserves. We require. Subtle but important difference.

No club will ever again be given any assistance because they deserve it, only if they require it.

If seven consecutive years rooted in the bottom half of the ladder doesn't qualify for a pick, then what does? A Richmond-esque 10 years? If so we could be back begging in three years time!

Gaining AFL assistance is a massive vote of no confidence in the people who run this club

Its a total disgarce Another President goes No one is willing to tell the truth

No wonder the club cant perform on the field

I think it's very important. We require assistance to get back on track and I think we'll get it but at the same time I can understand people saying we don't deserve it because we have brought so much on ourselves.

Can't see why a rival club would come out and argue for Melbourne getting a leg up.

a PP (or some other drafting advantage) is not just an easy way out, it would just be one part of a multi-faceted plan to reconstruct the club.

if the list doesn't get a boost then it will take years and years to get competitive on the field, further damaging the club and the competition/

Part of the overall plan to get mfc competitive in a "reasonable" amount of time involves some quick action on the list

The supporters, the afl and other stakeholders won't wait seven or more years for the club to competitive on the field

Being bad for a number of years is not the reason you should get a PP. It obviously has to do with something else. Maybe you need a certain amount of players with blue eyes to qualify.
