Deeoldfart 8,205 Posted May 2, 2013 Posted May 2, 2013 The MCC would not have a bar of it. Neither will I, or (I suspect) anyone else on here.
alias275 259 Posted May 2, 2013 Author Posted May 2, 2013 I would rather see the MFC die than become part of Tasmania. We are Melbourne, which last time i looked was the capitol city of the state of Victoria. The End. I'm certainly not disagreeing with you. Plus the AFL always talk about history, we are the history. You would think a 154 year old club and it's history comes way before moving any other club suggested.

But these hack Journo's who write their opinions as fact give me the trotts.
The Chazz 4,077 Posted May 2, 2013 Posted May 2, 2013 The thing about Vlad's comments about there always being a team called Melbourne in the AFL is that he has never said that they would always be the Demons. Just saying...
cookies 4 Posted May 2, 2013 Posted May 2, 2013 don't see problem with it really...if we could get 20K to a game and turn it into a Vic Park type intimidation then cool....plus its fairly cheap to get to Tassie to see the games.....i could also visit family...... they could sell double headed beers and pies
Je Roos Salem 661 Posted May 2, 2013 Posted May 2, 2013 While I'll shrug off the possibility of relocation, It'd actually be good if we could play one or two home games a year in Tasmania (As opposed to Darwin and Etihad) against lesser teams, though i doubt it could happen with North and Hawthorn's deals
old dee 24,084 Posted May 2, 2013 Posted May 2, 2013 It would solve one problem. I could forget about Senior AFL Football and concentrate on teams that would give me a reasonable degree of Joy.

It's not as profitable as the Darwin or Hawthorn's deal but I think it would've been easier to win games and please the main supporters.
Roost It 1,434 Posted May 2, 2013 Posted May 2, 2013 There was a similar article by David Penberthy in the Murdoch rags 2 Saturdays back. Not sure who he is or who was behind the story but Tasmania cannot sustain a team in its own right. Nor can the MFC!
Roost It 1,434 Posted May 2, 2013 Posted May 2, 2013 WE could become the Hobart Van Demons, keep our playing strip but adjust the red to a map of Tassie, get draft concessions, cash, maybe even a couple of decent midfielders. 12 games at the MCG, 12 in Tasmania. I say go for it. I mean does anyone seriously think that the current incarnation of the club is ever going to win a Premiership. If you do you're seriously dreaming.
ThreeOneSix 954 Posted May 2, 2013 Posted May 2, 2013 Being the capital city of the state of football, I'd be astonished if we relocated. We are the oldest club in the last, it's our league, we are just the peasant owners at the moment.

Kodak went from a giant to bankruptcy in ten years. Being original guarantees you nothing more than being the original
Carrot Top 947 Posted May 2, 2013 Posted May 2, 2013 The AFL isn't interested. Tassie isn't a big enough market to matter, it's split between the North and South which adds costs and lowers crowds, the population already follows footy so there is no long term ratings boost from conversions, and existing clubs are milking it for about what is the most you could get out of it. Now if that island was bigger, and played rugby, then the AFL would be eyeing them off, but a NZ push is many, many years away.

Guest rednblue4life Posted May 2, 2013 Posted May 2, 2013 The Melbourne Demons must never relocate, when we start winning consistantly we have the compacity to become the next Victorian powerhouse club with our aliance with the city of Casey. Even when the Saints, bulldogs and North were flying on the field we had more members. I'd like to see a team out of Tassie Maybe the Saints would best suit.
45HG 1,559 Posted May 2, 2013 Posted May 2, 2013 And some on here call us moderators flogs. Get a load of this "journo"!
dee-eee 231 Posted May 2, 2013 Posted May 2, 2013 As a member for 40 consecutive years sitting in a study groaning with Dees memorabilia ( including framed NO MERGER placard ) under no circumstances would i ever support a relocated or merged team. I would also never again attend any other AFL football matches .

There is so little desire to do anything in Tassie. The AFL have the Hawks and now the Kangas milking that cow. There is no market left to tap - there is no advertising to sell - it's already sold, there is no sponsorship money - the Hawks have it. It's not happening.
Wadda We Sing 10,685 Posted May 2, 2013 Posted May 2, 2013 The thing about Vlad's comments about there always being a team called Melbourne in the AFL is that he has never said that they would always be the Demons. Just saying... If Vlad had his way we would be off to Beijing and we would be the Chinese Dragons, breathing Red and Blue fire of course....its the dragons for me and for you!
thaipantsman 180 Posted May 2, 2013 Posted May 2, 2013 Won't happen. Worst scenario for all of us as Melbourne supporters would be a merge with North or Bulldogs. Both bad. Would rather be rock bottom till death than either option.
ThreeOneSix 954 Posted May 2, 2013 Posted May 2, 2013 The league is a Vic side too many, possibly two. But we should not be the side to go, I guess North, St Kilda and Bullies say the same.

The Chazz 4,077 Posted May 2, 2013 Posted May 2, 2013 My honest opinion is that if we don't get our sh!t sorted in the next 5 years, there will be a massive push from the AFL for us to merge with North. Jumper would look similar to this... Vlad gets his wish for there to always be a "Melbourne" team, it's just we are known as the Melbourne Kangaroos. It's a fairly romantic idea for him, still have a team named after the sporting capital of the world, whose nickname is that of the animal that everyone world-wide thinks about when talking about Australia. The international marketing the AFL could do with this is massive, especially given that we already have a face for the marketing in Jeremy Howe, as his leap is like, well, you know... Don't get me wrong, I'll give up on footy if it were to happen, but as I said, in my opinion it COULD make sense if we don't get better.

Not sure why my picture isn't working sorry, but it's quite simply the Melbourne jumper with a white kangaroo in the middle of it. Perhaps someone a bit more tech-savvy could do one up and post. Cheers.
WAdee 17 Posted May 2, 2013 Posted May 2, 2013 Not going to happen. The last time they merged/ relocated a club was Fitzroy and they had been undergoing financial troubles much worse than ours with a very small membership for decades. We clearly need to get our act together on the field but the current problems are manageable as we have dedicated members and a good core support of 19-20k at matches and about 30,000 members. Despite our horrible run of late we still have the support and the stadium to make a good go of things on our own without any need to merge or relocate. Any journo who says otherwise is attention seeking
