The tragic downfall of Liam Jurrah

Featured Replies

"Deal with three regional independents" logic. The government committed to delivering the upgraded service to regional and remote locations which were at the time worst serviced by existing infrastructure. Also part of why the NBN is so heavily behind it's roll-out targets - hardest places first. Like the 'trunk cable' between Queensland Coast and Mt Isa, basically the length of Bob Katter's electorate.

Sigh, I should clarify before someone calls me a 'biased crony of the witch Ju-Liar', I have stated a fact. That's all. But go on, get your blowtorch out before you even stop to think about whether I actually approve of massive pork-barrel deals to buy off a majority in the House of Reps.

Political discussion in Australia is about as pointed and issue-based as a typical Demonland thread is by about page 17.

Anyway, Liam quit the club rather ignominiously and it seems his life continued to spiral down since then. Meanwhile, the people most responsible for managing his welfare (and other player's welfare) while with the club were unceremoniously shown the door a year ago. Apparently in bad blood. Our then coach and football manager no longer have any direct role with the players. Our entire leadership group has changed. Our recruiting philosophy has changed from 'leaping for the speccie' to 'following the percentage play'.

Perhaps the most important thing to note is that however things were back then, there's very little in common with it now.

The only constant is that this year, like last year and the five before that, will be Colin Sylvia's breakout year. :)

You had me until the last line Little Goffy

Yes I know it was a joke.

Hopefully the court finds Jurrah guilty and they get this guy off the streets.

He is a danger to society and most regular citizens would already be locked up for what he has done.

I just pray justice is served.

there is a hint here but I am not quite sure what it is!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

he is an adult who makes and has to live by his choices

had a great network in melb, a juicy contract, friends and a very supportive club

choose to walk away which hasnt proved to be a great decision and he has to live with that decision

a fwit is a nice personal attack which sums up where ur at, but there has to be some realistic views on the support and care we gave a player who walked out

the club will continue to drop him a line to offer support im sure but time for everyone else to put our energies into our club and the people who want to be there

appreciate ur well thought out response lol

If you'd ever worked or live in an impoverished aboriginal community I've no doubt your tone would be different. The mere fact that he got to us at all was a miracle worked by some very committed Magpies. The club recruits young men and owes them the same support they offered Liam. I hope that support is continuing. He "walked" out because his community went into full melt down and he chose family over football. Something most other bogans playing the sport would never do. We owe the aboriginal community of this country much more than an apology. Maybe spend some time looking into the divisions and problems that the white mining boom is causing whilst you consider Liam's predicament.

You're still a f..wit, only a bigger one for crapping on about something you clearly no nothing about. Now head off to the tattoo parlour for you celtic band.

This is probably the best coverage of today's news about the trial -

Liam Jurrah target in 'bid for revenge', court hears during his assault trial

Remember, this part of the trial is where the prosecution and defence say what the evidence will prove. We haven't yet been presented with any evidence and for those who have already prejudged the outcome, Liam has put in a plea of "not guilty" and unless and until its proved otherwise, he is precisely that.

Hopefully the court finds Jurrah guilty and they get this guy off the streets.

Thanks 'Jack', thought you would come up with the right words.

Looks like he's had a bit of "Soul Glo" in the hair

Feel this could be a long trial, good luck Liam!

I'll counter that and suggest if you are interested in fair coverage this is the best news site in Central Australia by a mile:

No you don't, you pray that he is guilty... in fact you already have him on the gallows.

Maybe you could spend some time by telling us what divisions and problems you're alleging do actually exist.

The last time I looked (physically on mine sites) these companies were doing a fantastic job of engaging communities through employing and training local aboriginals.

Thanks Fork. I assume you're countering the first part of my post rather than the conclusion.

The Alice Springs article seems to jump quickly from Robson's opening address to Tippet's. The contrast is stark and we can see where the defence is going. It's a dark night and the atmosphere is alcohol fueled. How reliable can any evidence against the accused be?

Yes sorry Jack, I was referring to the first part of your post. Simply suggesting the Alice Springs News as a good, balanced news source.

Notable is the description of the jury as being mostly white. The people of Alice Springs, black and white, are sick of the drug fuelled violence in town and want to put a stop to it. Further to this however is the frustration with the apparent leniency when it comes to sentencing. There is a lot of sympathy with the Police at the moment who are doing all they can only to have judges (seemingly in locals eyes) letting those prosecuted off lightly. The local jail is overflowing with a obviously high number of indigenous prisoners and the situation in Yuendumu would appear to have no end in sight (For those of you that care, while the recent chapter of this story goes back to a terrible death a few years ago, for the groups/families involved, the origins of this feud goes back decades). What this means for Liam, I'm not sure, but there are plenty of people involved in this case, who want him to be made an example of.

Hopefully the court finds Jurrah guilty and they get this guy off the streets.

Why even have courts ? [censored] I say, [censored] - lets skip the whole justice process, just pronounce him guilty as anybody that has done what he done is and then do your worst arrrrrr ( I have gone a bit pirate and Im not even sure why...)

Ask the guy that had a fractured skull, Liams actions in the last few months speak for them self.

Cry me a river, every person is responsible for there own actions, if your Black ,White or Yellow, theres more people in the Victorian Prison System that have had a lot less opurtunitys than Liam, your a flag burning know it all.

Ask the guy that had a fractured skull, Liams actions in the last few months speak for them self.

You were there? You actually witnessed the events and can categorically state that it was Jurrah who attacked the victim?

Fortunately we have a judicial system operating in this country that countenances the belief that a person is innocent until proven guilty beyond all reasonable doubt.

Nice one middle class white boy. They teach you that at school or are you paraphrasing John Howard. Go spend some time in an Aboriginal community such as Liam's and then retread your post.

Seems to me you have a problem with peoples race.

Seems to me you have a problem with peoples race.

While you simply have a problem with the legal system.

While you simply have a problem with the legal system.

Let the horse run its course. And as for the legal system, its more screwed up than the current Australian Government.

  • DRAFT: The Next Generation

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.
