State of Play

Both GC and GWS have to reduce their lists gradually to get back into line with the other 16 AFL clubs, so they will lose some players. I would imagine one or two here and there may leave over time, but in the main they will hold onto their quality players. There won't be a mass walkout as some indicate.

Apparently with Cats getting Josh Caddy, the "need" or appetitie for Jordie Gysberts has been terminated.

Also situation with Tom Gillies may settle the Jared Rivers future. If JR goes to Cats, I think Tom Gillies will walk out on the Cats. He has spent 5 years now in the shadow of Scarlett and played some good footy when given the chance.

  1. Free agent signing - Shannon Byrnes
  2. #26 father son selection : Jack Viney ... what a sensation
  3. MFC give picks #3 & 13 to GWS <> GWS give MD2 Jesse Hogan & pick 20 & Dom Barry
  4. Brent Moloney joins Lions as a Free Agent
    Rumours & negotiations:
    OUT -

  • Jared Rivers - free agent to the Cats. GFC offer 3 yrs @$350k. JR has toured Cattery ...but Dees still hopeful
  • Jordie Gysberts - likely may stay a Demon in 2013 now.
  • Stef Martin - has been put on the market despite having 1 yr on contract left. Whisper is now he will be involved in the Saints?Pies package deal for Ray & Dawes.

IN-

  • Chris Dawes from pies - Has chosen the Demons (above Blues, Dogs and Lions)
  • Cam Pedersen from kangas - reports say he will join MFC in 2013 (awaiting final pick options to be sorted once Melbourne knows FA comp available).
  • Farren Ray from saints - under contract and Saints say he is wanted. Mgr and player are looking at ops elsewhere. MFC very keen and may acquire as part of a 3-way pacakge with Pies/Saints.
  • Ben Warren from kangas - question asked. I hope its a full stop as he is VFL quality only.
  • Matt Thomas from Power - discussion raised only
  • Scott Gumbleton from bombers - Mark Neeld has a 30 minute coffee with Gumbleton. Mail has it Bombers offer is 1 yr, Freo offer is 3 yrs. I hope we pass on the injury proned, inaccurately kicking fwd.

Okay, so far we have had a major boost to our playing stocks this Free agency/trade and draft period. I'm just going to lay down who/what we have picked up because im slowly getting excited for the upcoming footy season (something i probably haven't said in a while...)

INS-

Free Agency-

Shannon Byrnes (geel)

Draft-

Jack Viney (pick 26) F/S

Draft pick 4* (potentially Wines/Toumpas)

Trade-

Jesse Hogan (MD pick 2)

Dom Barry (NT zone selection)

Chris Dawes (coll)

Draft pick 58*

OUTS-

Free Agency-

Brent Moloney (RFA) - (Bris)

Trade-

Draft pick 3

Draft pick 13

Draft pick 20

Draft pick 45

Now i personally feel this is a MAJOR plus to Mark Neeld and his team. We do only have 2 picks inside 50 in this draft, yes. BUT we will get not ONE but TWO top 10 talents! The joys of haveing a coach with a frimly imprinted game plan and an idea of what players are needed to run it

The Tom-toms seem to have quietened. My take is that the AFL have told the clubs on the QT what picks they will get for all FA, and they have agreed to keep it quiet for now.

I reckon Cam Pederson and Farren Ray are already ours either for compensation or for trades that are linked to compensation. So they need to not release info.

Dont know, just reckon. But if players were told Im sure some twit would tweet.

Agree with your logic I heard last Friday from a very reliable source that Ray Dawes and Pederson were ours but we had to look like we were trading hard.

Go figure

3 if you include Hogan. I'm really happy with what Neeld & Co have done in the past couple of weeks. Only up from here.

Not a chance. It is an impossibility to expect all 18 clubs and their employees to keep a secret. Any secret.

As at 17/10/12 (likely) draft picks 4, 58, 64, PSD #3.

Rumours & negotiations:

OUT -

  • Jared Rivers - free agent to the Cats. GFC offer 3 yrs @$350k. JR has toured Cattery ...answer pending
  • Jordie Gysberts - Cats were looking but now have Caddy so all quiet.
  • Stef Martin - seems like no one is after a flexible ruckman/fwd/backman (!!!). GWS surely would be tempted. Maybe MFC could get a pick 44 or 62 (3rd or 4th round).

IN-

  • Darryle Pearce - early mail was he was getting a 4yr deal off MFC. Signed with Freo as free agent
  • Josh Caddy - MFC was a very interested party. Caddy said "I'm not interested in MFC". Signed with Cats
  • Sharrod Wellingham - MFC was looking at a Dawes/Wellingham package. Wellingham said thanks but No, I'm going home to WA. West Coast signed.
  • Cam Pedersen from kangas - reports say MFC still very keen & awaiting FA compo pick.
  • Farren Ray from saints - under contract and Saints say he is wanted. MFC was pursuing but will stay a Saint IMO.
  • Ben Warren from kangas - question asked. I hope its a full stop as he is VFL quality only.

Tim Harrington has been at pains in all the interviews I've heard to point out that we need to look at the overall result of our action in FA, trading and drafting ...

In for Out = Result

Hogan for ND3 = looks par

Draftee for 4 = looks par

Viney for 13 = looks value

Dawes for 26 = looks par

Barry + 58 for 45 = looks par

Byrnes for Moloney = looks par

It's too easy to take for granted that we got Viney in the 2nd round, secured a very highly rated key forward (THE hardest position to fill) in the mini-draft and attracted a mature KPF and a premiership small forward to our "untouchable club".

I reckon we're going very well and we're not done yet.

Anyone else think our 'state of play' in the grand scheme of things is even better than it seems due to Davey, Gawn and Taggert likely to play much bigger roles for us next year (reported they are over their injuries). Taggert especially could add a lot.

    THE BLOW by Whispering Jack

Narrm’s finals prospects took a crushing blow after the team’s insipid performance at Optus Stadium against a confident Waaljit Marawar in the first of its Doug Nicholls Round outings for 2024.  I use the description “crushing blow” advisedly because, although the season is not yet at it’s halfway mark, the Demons have now failed abysmally in two of their games against teams currently occupying bottom eight places on the ladder.  The manner in which these losing games were played out w

HALF FULL by KC from Casey

It was a case of the Casey Demons going into a game with a glass half full in their match up against the Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields on Saturday. As the list of injured and unavailable AFL and VFL listed players continues to grow and with Melbourne taking all three emergencies to Perth for the weekend on a “just in case” basis, its little brother was always destined to struggle. Casey was left with only eight AFL listed players from who to select their team but only two - an out-of-form

GAMEDAY: Rd 10 vs West Coast

It's Game Day and the Demons have returned to the site of their drought breaking Premiership to take on the West Coast Eagles in what could very well be a danger game for Narrm at Optus Stadium. A win and a percentage boost will keep the Dees in top four contention whilst a loss will cast doubt on the Dees flag credentials and bring them back to the pack fighting for a spot in the 8 as we fast approach the halfway point of the season.

    WARNING by William from Waalitj

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had
