Jack played 22 games, and by his own admission, he was probably disappointed in his early form.  There’s no doubt that, being a first up captain of the Melbourne Football Club, he put a lot of pressure on himself, which at times probably affected his on-field performance.  However, I thought that as the season went on, Jack coped with this far better, and certainly his on ground performance improved enormously.  Jack really focused heavily on the defensive aspects of his game, because as a leader he felt that he needed to lead in this area.  I was really pleased with Jack’s attitude throughout the course of the season, particularly as a leader of the Melbourne Football Club. - Brian Royal (midfield coach) melbournefc.com.au

Despite that, he's now gotten through what has been a tough year for a young kid and I expect him to rise to the occasion with the additional maturity and a tough pre season.

Agree Timestrap. Jack has had big year with the captaincy, a bigger fitness regime and working on the defensive side to his game. I expect to see a fitter, bigger and better Jack in 2013. I suspect the club will be putting alot into Jack to develop him further.

Its only his 4th season too

Pretty average year, I rarely saw flashes of brilliance from him and not many particularly good bits of play. Averaged a modest amount of possessions. Maybe a couple of good marks or tackles here and there, but nothing in terms of kicking and speed.

Note to coaches: Don't set the bar so low for our key players

Don't panic folks.

In 10 years, we'll be saying 'Thank God Jordie McMahon could kick straight, and we got that champion along with that nobody who went off to that club that used to play at that empty stadium in Sydney.'

really don't know where to stand with this one - I am very pleased with the pairing of he and Grimes as our leaders going forward, they both seem to have the head for it. However, as far as his individual performances go he was a let down this year. Went missing a lot and seemed to lose some of his virtues - being smart, classy play, strong overhead and top disposal. It has to be noted that with the exception of Clark and Jones, nobody looked particularly good though, which is not surprising when you get belted every week.

No getting around it, Trengove as disappointing in '012. Hopefully just a case of third year blues from our no.2 draft pick. Needs to lift his output by 25% and find that yard in pace he seems to have mysteriously lost or he will be marked down as yet another draft disappointment.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
