In all honestly, if Dawes is as good a forward as we can get, I'm all for focusing in mids and putting games into Fitzpatrick and Williams as forwards instead. Either one has more ability and upside than Dawes and I think is a better long-term prospect. If we do need to get in another tall forward, don't go halfway, target someone with real ability.

Sure, it's not razor sharp analysis but you can still get a fair idea of what you're dealing using that view. And I'm too lazy to type out 50+ names and clubs!

I dont mind taking dawes if it is for a reasonable cost to Melbourne. Problem is that Eddie seems to think that anything out of Collingwood is worth 4x the market value even if they dont want it. He will want a top pick for his discard and Dawes will want top $$ to come to us. I would be inclined to pass if they are asking too much, Melbourne has seldom had any luck with big named recruits, i.e. for those that remember past failures Diamond Jim Tilbrook, Kelvin Templeton, Peter Moore, etc..

Agree. 3,4,&13 don't even mention them. Swap for Martin or Petterd ok. Swap for compo pick we get for losing Rivers and Moloney if second round ok. He is worth far less than Wellingham and they are talking high second round and maybe Stevens. Dawes is not Tippett and I could see Fitzpatrick passing him in a year.

What other Forwards at 97kg with a yearning for pack marks with a beep test at 14 are out there? I can handle having a 17 year old monster train with us for a year,play at casey and then play round 1 2014. Getting Hogan won't hurt our chances of finishing top 4 next year. We won't finish top 4 anyway.

When we picked up Clark every announcer had there opinion that he was not worth the money and would not bring anything to Melbourne.

I do agree we may have spent a little bit more that what he is worth but he was the only tall forward available at the time and Melbourne did what they had to do to get him which I applaud them for that.

After the half a season he played for us a lot of the critics changed there view on Clarky.

With out Mitch Clark we have No Forward line, we need a player like Dawes.

The problem is that if the team lacks forward targets, then it will hinder the progress of the rest of the team (specifically the midfield), who will have to play in an unsuitable style. I think that the FD is looking at bringing in players who can provide a presence from the very first day, so that the youngsters can develop around them.

These players may only contribute for a couple of years (like Byrnes) but they are important because it will allow the game style to develop more effectively.

The lack of these players (and the sole reliance on drafting 18 year olds) is a recipe for slow development and bad habits.

Dawes was good in 2010 and Tippett is over-rated for mine - he gets easy delivery from their mids and this season has had less defensive pressure because of taylor walker (who I rate more highly than tippett).
