Swans envy

Featured Replies

Watched the Crows/Swans game and I am so envious of the Swans supporters. They get their money's worth from an amazing TEAM of players, whose structures rarely fail, whose players would rather die than let the opposition get any free ball, they play for each other and so bloody hard at the ball. Super impressed. Players like LRT and Shaw are average players but in the Swans line-up they become major factors in the starting 22.

PLEASE Dees, sneak into their training, hold them down, stick needles in their veins and steal some of their blood for our boys.

And while I am it - how good is Goodes. Should we be speaking of him in the same tones as Ablett senior, Carey, Matthews? He is an absolute freak. Skilled, quick, huge heart, reads the play better than anyone in the modern game and runs all day.

They reckon some women have penis envy - I have Swans envy.

The swans are the template the MFC should study hard.

Recruit players to do a job.

You met their coach?! Lol...

If he had, Maldonboy would now have become Maldonman!

It will be interesting to see what they can do with Moloney if he was to go there and then we could ask why Neeld and Craig cant make Watts into Goodes mark 2

Totally agree on Goodes. There's a reason he's won two Brownlows. The guy is a freak. clearly one of the best players in the league although he's a little past his prime now. It was a hell of a game to watch.

And he had another couple of seasons where he was in the mix to win more.

How good a year is RLT having, as well?

They look good. Interesting finals series.

....and did it quietly without bottoming out and getting rewarded for mediocrity with draft picks. Sure some cap concessions but that is not what drives them -- it is pride. Note that young Demons. Pride in themselves and their team.

The Swans are a modern day template for drafting and recruiting but you can discount their quality culture in their inner sanctum and leadership group. Think its also time for them to have a level salary cap. However, awesome template.

My dad has been a Bloods supporter his whole life so I have always had a soft spot for them and always watch their games. Sydney's ability to pick blokes from other clubs who are fringe players/discards from other clubs and turn them into solid players is amazing!

Great culture with a group of players who want to play for the jumper!

Cue thread whinging about how we should have poached Longmire after 186. And how pathetic we are, because of everything.

They also have a functioning Morton.

A reformed Morton who was sensational yesterday. Watching that game I could not help but wonder if Neeld was seeing it and if so if he might think Cale was worth persisting with.

Why would he? From what I saw, that's exactly how Mitch has always played (when playing well).

If I was envious on 8th September I am even more so now. I hate the overuse of the word culture, but this club has something that can't be bought, stolen or copied. You have to build it and I want the Dees to build a club/team spirit that is similar, but which defines us and wins flags. Across the 22 they were a bit weaker man-for-man than Hawks but played one of the best team games I have seen - ever.

The Swans second comeback during the 3rd Quarter was sublime.

Imagine if the Demons did that against Hawthorn...

2 of my old Bosses are mad Swans supporters. 1 was working at the game in the scoreboard.

He is a very happy man.

It's why Roos is so hard on us. Losing on purpose is a disaster. I wanted it at the time but never again do I want my club to not try and win every moment of every game. It's a long road we must travel

Shows us were the team should be heading One of the great finals I have watched brilliant I hope the demons players watched and learned

They also have a functioning Morton.

Richmond didn't think so but a good coach and gameplan turned a limited player like Morton into a contributor on Grand Final day.

The MFC preach that we need more experience and leadership but then they let Rivers and Moloney walk in FA without a fight.

Neeld says he wants tough players to execute his gameplan but then turns our best inside mid (Moloney) into a fringe player struggling to get a game. I have no doubt if Moloney goes to either Swans or Hawks he would be a very valuable player.

It's much easier to de-list then it is to develop Neeldy.

Were repeating the same sins as during the Bailey era by letting our veterans go. The difference is Neeld uses the mantra "we need more games experience into our list" as apposed to the old "being competitive" dribble.

There is a fair bit more to the situation than your post suggests. This is not the same situation for a few reasons.

Rivers is an unrestricted FA, so it doesn't matter what Neeld thinks about him. I would guess that Neeld would like him to stay but regardless of his wishes, Rivers has free reign to go where he wants to go. Personally, I hope he stays, but I don't think he will (just a gut feeling).

Maloney was poor this year and he was unable to force his way into the side. He is a restricted FA, which means that the club can match any price offered but it is highly unlikely that it would be worth it, given that there are a few clubs willing to offer him a decent contract, and that he doesn't appear to be a part of MN's plans. He is very good inside but he has always lacked the ability to cover a spread defensively.

To say that we are 'repeating the same sins' is a little bit vague. MN is not delisting these players (like Junior). If they leave, it is because they want to go.

Whenever you have a new coach, there will be a change of personnel. In the case of a club that has been floundering, there will be more than a few changes. And that's probably for the best.

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. • PREVIEW: Gold Coast

Melbourne’s slow starts have been a troubling theme for a while. Against the Suns, they started slowly in both of their games, they trailed by 5.7.37 to 0.1.1 at quarter time at Peoples First Stadium in Round 16. This season, the story has remained the same and if the Demons fail to shake off this issue against the unbeaten Gold Coast Suns, they will be in serious danger of capitulating once again in their Easter Sunday showdown.
