I know the article says he's likely and wants to stay but if we made him an offer to good to refuse, keeping in mind our connections with Mitch and Jade, could we steal him?

2 years on good coin would be well worth it just for the experience and leadership that he'd bring to the club.

I say we make it happen. Come on dees, get it done!

He'd be crazy to leave the Lions at this point in his career.

I agree with that Ron. Would be a pure financial decision if he decided to leave and would be our only hope of landing him.

Maybe make it a bit more attractive with an assistant coaching role as midfield coach after his playing days may help it along?

Love Black. One of the best midfielders I've seen, but he's too old for us and he also owns a BOQ franchise, which keeps him busy in Brisbane.

One of Neeld's worst decisions this year was to not tag him. He proceeded to annihilate us.

I'd love to see Black in a Dees guernsey, but there is a 0% chance of it. I'm very curious to know who is on Neeld's radar though, given that he has declared we aren't in on Cloke.

I would imagine Travis Boak would be priority no.1.

Maybe we could offer him a BOQ franchise in Melbourne? :) I agree that Black is a pipe-dream. A nice pipe-dream though.

Didn't CAC once say on this forum that his biggest regret (including Molan etc) was talking himself out of picking Black? I find that pretty regretful too now that I think about it.

Yes, he did. He said he knew he was a gun and was going to pick him, but the more he saw of him he started concentrating on his weaknesses. He said he learnt a major lesson from that decision.

Black was slow, but it never stopped him being a ball magnet, or from swinging onto that brilliant left foot. He's also one of the best handballers out of traffic I've seen.

wouldnt have mattered. Black wouldn't have been half the player he is if he were drafted to the demons.

Or he might have set the standard.

Nonetheless I expect he might have been a fraction better than Troy Longmuir, who was the player we took with our last pick before Black went.

Ahh, hindsight again.

I do get sick of this line being pedaled.

Clubs have successes and failures at draft time, but we've been horrific in talent identification. And no, I'm not saying development isn't important.

Black would have been an in betweener for the changing culture. He would have learnt from the likes of Lyon, Viney, Stinga & Stynes and still been around when Danners relied on his own foot soldiers who let him down towards the end.

Black would have been a very good player at Melbourne, whilst not having Aker, Voss & Lappin with him he would have been part of an exceptional midfield with Woey & Trapper

Black is an absolute pro and would have been good wherever he went

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
