Re Naitanui, he's appears physically & emotionally more mature than Watts at this stage, so it's no surprise that NikNat is ahead at the moment.

But IMO when the penny drops for young Jack, to harden up & play for the team & club with real desperation, He could be anything.

I have seen it and I admit he looks very impressive. Given another couple of years he could well be living up to the hype. He just needs to get more of the ball and improve his disposal skills. A lot. I just object to people raving about how much more advanced he is that Watts when the stats simply don't support that stance.

I desperately want Watts to be the player we all hope he can be - but he is still a bit of a fairy and it kills me.

Leaning towards Nic Nat at this stage.

I reckon you have to wait at least 8 - 9 years to evaluate any draft . Probably longer . And if you agree that it takes this long then why do we place so much creedence on getting it 'Right' at the time . I agree that you've got a much better chance at getting it right at the pointy end but it's impossible to get it right all the time . Even half the time is a stretch . There is a lot of luck involved .

Had a look at the 1997 draft the other day . Goodes went at no. 43 , Black 31 and Nathan Thompson 82 . The 'Experts' reckon we get it better these days but I'm not convinced . Joel Selwood went at no.7 in the 2006 draft . The Hawks picked Mitch Thorp at no.6 . Mitch played 2 games .

The same 18yo's that are getting talked up as 'Definate' stars of the future will be castigated by all and sundry years later if they aren't stars . And the recruiters will have got it wrong again , of course .

It's like groundhog day with this stuff . An 18yo is way too young to be judged correctly on his future abilities . Of course , these same recruiters are hailed as 'Geniuses' when they pluck out a Hird or a Goodes later in the draft .

We made the decision re Watts at the time . IMO It wasn't right or wrong at the time so it can't be right or wrong now . It was simply an educated guess . Also .....the club could have been scared off with the 'Go home' factor re NN .

Technically most of the votes are AGAINST you seeing you're so sure we got it wrong.

Comparison stats.

Overall, they look to be fairly even over this year. NicNat has played more games obviously, and has had more scores (playing as ruck/forward vs HBF), but Watts is well ahead in disposals and efficiency. Watts wins rebound 50's, Nic Nat wins inside 50s. Again, pretty obvious. Watts has more uncontested while NicNat has contested. NicNat has tackles won. Watts has Marks.

Watts does not play loose man in defence. He always has an opponent but zones off. I don't know how many times the coach has to say it or you even have to watch a game to realise that he does not play as a loose man apart from the very, very odd occasion.

but there is no doubt whatsoever that Watts isn't worthy of pick 1. He might scrape in as a first round draft pick, which is probably too generous. No non Melbourne supporter would have him in the first round.

No non Melbourne supporter would take him in the first round because the media like to paint him out as Melbourne's whipping boy for two reasons. 1 because he was a number 1 draft pick and 2 because he plays for Melbourne so the media want to get on his case.

Well Watts is definitely a better kick and can get more possessions, but Naitanui is tapping the ball, slapping the ball, he's around the ball so much. When he goes up for a mark he always looks like marking it. There was a brilliant passage on Saturday night around the WC goals where he just looked like a machine trying to get the ball out.

Naitanui plays more like his life depends on it I must say.

However I'm very happy Watts is at our club and have never felt that it was a wrong decision, now what matters is whether to keep him back or play him forward. He's a good mark, a great kick but probably just has to improve his lead and strength in contests

Why cant Watts play like that fierce hard at it physicality

Going through the motions absolutely no desperation at the level required at this level

Thats what the team as a whole have to learn and accept or they will never make the grade
