It seems a long time ago that Bartel was shifted on to him in his debut game at Kardinia Park.

Pros: inside mid, tall, smart player who makes quick and clever give offs, can find the ball, OK mark

Cons: slow, poor endurance, weak upper body, below average kick, one sided, no elite skill or hurt factor, meanders around the ground

Conclusion ? Limited to playing an inside role where he can be very clever with his give-offs, will generally make good decisions. May improve his tank to an acceptable level and has been curtailed by injury. No real elite trait, but may become a solid B grader. Needs luck with his body and greater strength. Worth persisiting with, but the clock is ticking. Next year is a big one for him. Has some trade value.

Pretty amazing thread so far

Had a great debut against the bench mark team of the time - when we were horrible he was the only one who put in

Backed it up the next week against a top 8 contender

Was on track against Collingwood the next week (eventual premier) before that dog Barham put his knees into his back and put him out for the rest of the year

The following year (2011) when we were utterly horrible he put on some very good performances.

Tackled relentlessly, gathered clearances, possession counts were good, was good against good and bad opposition (no flat track bullying)

Suffers a late season injury, misses the rest of the year. Has an injury interrupted pre season.

Neeld says he's fitness is way off par (for someone who is working in the guts as a clearance guy he needs a bigger body, something Bailey clearly didn't see fit to address)

Neeld tells him to work on it in the 2, the guy breaks his jaw and misses over a month of footy, comes back and is working his way to the seniors

Staggers me the expectation some people have on these kids.

Give the Gys a full preseason and put him back in the engine room next to Jones / Viney / Grimes etc. and he'll be fine

He's had an injury restricted year and Neeld likes his younger players

to earn a spot through hard working. He's trying to breed competitiveness in

a footy club something we havn't had for years as we just gifted young players

games. His talent is about a million times more than Macdonald but maybe at

the moment he can't quite keep the same intensity as him yet, but he will get there.

I think that Neeld is getting him ready for next season, gradually build is fitness this year, get him ripe and ready for a hard pre-season and then let him loose is 2012.

I also think that Gysberts is the type of player who will really benefit from having Jack Viney in our midfield, along with Jones those three will be the core of our midfield going forward. Two battering rams in Viney and Jones with Gysberts skills and awareness, it's pretty exciting...imo.

I reckon if you are a fringe player in the team at the moment it's more than likely the club is working out wether your a keeper or not. If yours young bloke coming back from injury and you are plying away at casey then you are being groomed for next year. Gys will be right

there's definitely a logic in this that resonates true to me. This season and especially the second half is really nothing but evaluation . This would tie in rather well.

We wont really know 100% til the dust settles and we can review with benefit of hindsight but it has an irresistible congruity .

I know people will say that we're too bad to tank (or have to tank), but we cant' be "that" bad can we? We smashed GWS like "better" teams should, just as we will most likely do it to the GC and GWS when we play them again. High rewards at the end of the season if we finish 3rd last (we will get Viney with a 2nd round pick). We also activated BOTH our compo picks this year.

I have got a strong belief that this around the boundary/kick to a contest game is far from the style we will play in the future. It's almost risk management - what can we do in our "development year" to make sure it is not flogging after flogging? I know, let's kick to the boundary and waste as much time playing nothing but contested ball. Nb. Please be kind to me about this paragraph - I neeeeed something to think about this team in a positive manner!

Back on topic - I'm yet to see anything that suggests to me that Gysberts will be a long term player for the MFC. I have stated it for around 18 months now, continually being shot down, now some are starting to see what I have been concerned about.

Not sure at this stage. Really hoping he makes it considering we spent pick 11 on him.

I expect him to play seniors in the last 4 matches, assuming his Casry form is ok.

I hope he does too as I think he has the ability to turn himself into one of our top 6 players moving forward.

The problem here with some posters is the very next pick in Gys's draft, Daniel Talia, who has gone on to be a very good CHB with the Crows. He was the player most thought we would take.
