Please don't not waste a high pick on talls.

Our real problem is we have no elite mids.

Do what you have to in Free Agency/Trade but please with our first 3 picks can we pick the best midfielders avaliable and help build a better engine room.

It has been the problem all year long.

A great midfield can make a very average forward look good, so mids mids mids!

With so many picks at least one of them has to come off.

Yep. we need mids. But i also think we need another tall forward and wouldn't be disapointed if we traded pick 4 for Hogan.

mids , mids & mids

I would be, I don't think we can wait for an untried 17 yo key forward who has a kicking deficiency to wait out a year and then develop into the player we want. Similar thoughts from me with Martin although not about the kicking.

If we were going to be players in the 17 yo raffle I think last year was it for us.

In todays competition an AFL side requires 2 to 3 elite mids and up to 8 quality supports. i.e approx 50% of a side seeking finals action must have this number of quality mids. If we cannot achieve these numbers in the next few years we are no where. A certain amount of good luck recruiting and training is paramount for our success

I agree ... mids, funny though a couple of years ago the football fraternety thought we had too many when we went for Gysberts at pick 11. Next year really need strauss, blease, tappy, gysberts to come through and make an impact.

We need mids but mids who can KICK! I am so sick of watching us turn the ball over all the time, and make poor decisions with the ball. Hawthorn kicked 130 points on Saturday without Buddy against supposedly the best defence in the league. Why? Because their disposal skills and decision making is sublime. Thanks god Neeld actually recognised this at the after match presser - I couldn't believe it a few weeks back when he said after a game with more terrible turnovers on display that it was surprising because it "hadn't been our issue". I reckon it's our biggest one.

I agree with our need for skillful smalls who can win their own ball. I would however put Stringer in with that group. As with Pavlich out west, he can be used as a high impact mid at need, and Neeld loves versatility.

I agree RM. I'd keep Stringer in mind, who could be an extractor as well as an outside marking mid, or push forward & goal.

The midfielder has been one of Melbourne’s brightest sparks in a trying season

Apart from some good work from Nathan Jones, our highlights have been Clark providing a traget and Howe's 13-14 odd nominated MOTY marks. And the win over Essendon...

I cant belive you guy's did not see this week coming.

Port are a better team then us simple.

I think when you have a team of VFL players you cant think we will beat even low AFL sides.

I will say it again we have around 12 players who are just not at AFL level.

We have our only real forward target's out in Clark and Jurruh.

We have bar none the worst AFL midfield in memory.

Mark Neeld will be given every chance to make his own team and things will turn our way starting round 1 next year.

We will bring in Travis Cloke in F/A IMO 6 year deal.

WE will bring in some top end talent Toumpas,Viney,Grundy

Then we need to go after Matt campbell from north as a trade for our small forward.

The club will get this draft right because we have a really good football department now.

Captain Jack's will have a full year under there belts starting round 1 2013.

We have all had to much pain this year but Mark Neeld will have his team in 2013 that's worth looking forward to.

Nathan Jones will love having Viney Jnr and maybe Toumpas giving him a hand next year.

Attention Coach Neeld: Pick 3 - Brodie Grundy

Lock him, then Stock him with midfielders, he is a Nuclear Bomb!

We need some big guys with a bit of mongrel in them who are prepared to take on a contents and who love a bit of physical contact. Stop recruiting weak small players.

scenario 1, Suns choose Grundy & Viney as f/son pick round 2 (#24)

#1- GWS: Whitfield (lock), #2-Suns: Grundy, #3: Toumpas, #4 Mayes/Stringer

scenario 3, Suns choose Grundy & Viney as f/son pick round 1 (#3)

scenario 4, Suns choose Toumpas & Viney as f/son pick round 1 (#3)

#1- GWS: Whitfield (lock), #2-Suns: Toumpas, #3: Viney, #4 Grundy

Likely #13 : Dayle Gartlett "Riloi like" / Ben Kennedy "Marc Murphy accumulator" / Nick Vlastin "Lenny Hayes like"

Likely #24 (excl Viney): Jason Pongrecic

Is that calculus or algebra?

I'm sorry but I was never any good at maths or Latin either.

Er...yeah.It worries me that I can't see Melbourne anywhere in the post.Think I might call 13translation for an interpretation. But I'm worried it might send him round the twist.

I'm all for loading up on midfielders, but can we please make sure they have the tools to become elite players, not a James Strauss who looks like a superstar at training but who wilts under the slightest pressure, or a Luke Tapscott who is a solid unit with no football nous.

I had a dream...

a) Trade period

- Koby Stevens (WCE) traded to MFC in exchange for Cale Morton

-> tough inside mid. Physically built and ready to play MFC 1sts

- Brett Meredith (Sydney) traded to MFC in exchange for Ricky Petterd and pick 45

-> highly skilled. cannot get a game at Sydney due to depth of midfield. Returning from injury but another Vic boy due to come home.

Delisted by MFC: Spencer, Bennell, Bate, J Mcdonald, Green (sorry it hurts but it has to be done)

B) AFL national draft

(Whitfield and Grundy go at pick 1 and pick 2)

Pick 3 Jimmy Toumpas - pacy midfielder

Pick 4 Sam Mayes - highly skilled midfielder

Pick 13 Dayle Gartlett - "Rioli" like small fwd / mid

Pick 25 Jack Viney - the engine, hard inside mid

Pick 66 Daniel Nicholson (rookie elevation)

c) Rookies

Magner (2nd yr) Couch (2nd yr) Evans (3rd yr interstate rookie) L Williams (2nd yr) Sheahan (2nd yr)

Kelvin Lawrence - delisted rookie

Rookie draft - #3 Luke Blackwell (Claremont) or Kyle Martin (Frankston) #21 Luke Tynan (Scorpions) or a young ruckman like Sikora from Sandringham

You have it all worked out alright ! Sign up Jamar to 3 yr contract and then trade him. Pull the other one, and it plays Jingle Bells.

There's more a chance of us finishing 17th, GWS 16th and us trading with GC with Morton and pick 12 for Caddy and ensuring Viney goes to 2nd round.

Oh wait....

Yep. we need mids. But i also think we need another tall forward and wouldn't be disapointed if we traded pick 4 for Hogan.

If we were going to gamble on an U-17, I'd rather we go for a Big Powerful & aggressive type.

I don't want us to get any more kids who turn up like Lambs.

If we're going young, go tough bastards first. At the very least they'll have a dip & can become a solid footy citizen.

No more Weetras, Mortons, Bennells, Marics....

If we're to use early picks, no guess work on ticka.

pick 3 jimmy toumpas

pick 4 oliver wines

pick 13 ben kennedy or dayle garlett.

i hope boak and cloke sign at there respective clubs!

This. Add these guys in and a couple of players who cant get regular games due to good lists or free agents that play a role and we would be a lot more competitive.

Potentially sacrifice someone as well to get another pick that would land us Stringer.

  • REPORT: Carlton

I am now certain that the decline in fortunes of the Melbourne Football Club from a premiership power with the potential for more success to come in the future, started when the team ran out for their Round 9 match up against Carlton last year. After knocking over the Cats in a fierce contest the week before, the Demons looked uninterested at the start of play and gave the Blues a six goal start. They recovered to almost snatch victory but lost narrowly with a score of 11.10.76 to 12.5.77. Yesterday, they revisited the scene and provided their fans with a similar display of ineptitude early in the proceedings. Their attitude at the start was poor, given that the game was so winnable. Unsurprisingly, the resulting score was almost identical to that of last year and for the fourth time in succession, the club has lost a game against Carlton despite having more scoring opportunities.

  • CASEY: Carlton

The Casey Demons smashed the Carlton Reserves off the park at Casey Fields on Sunday to retain a hold on an end of season wild card place. It was a comprehensive 108 point victory in which the home side was dominant and several of its players stood out but, in spite of the positivity of such a display, we need to place an asterisk over the outcome which saw a net 100 point advantage to the combined scores in the two contests between Demons and Blues over the weekend.

  • POSTGAME: Carlton

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.
