Colin Sylvia

I wish to hell he'd do away with the "panicky" attempts to hack/kick the ball off the ground.

On Saturday, he connected twice - result 2 goals to the tiges; twice he missed all together - looked very ordinary.

He's got all the skills and should be able to match it with the best of them, he can take a great grab, kick the ball a mile, run in a straight line and is as strong as a bull, but injuries and stupidity have stopped him.

Before the game on the weekend, Neeld, when interviewed, said he just wants him to play with intensity which he seems to lack

I'm sure if he applied himself and played with intensity he could be a great player; he has probably 6 or so seasons ahead of him in which he could wipe out the memories of the past 6 or reinforce them.

It seems there is no understanding of the seriousness of his injury, and the impact that has on fitness, physical ability and confidence.

Colin is starting to become a super player and I will back him all the way. Massive fan here.

I agree Choko. & also think Col & Clark, when firing, are about our only elite players (Jamar 2 years ago & Frawls almost but not this year). Yes Col's frustratingly inconsistent, but injuries + a couple nights partying have aided his condemnation. I'm still supportive though. BTW did you notice Stef break out of the pack & kick that goal over his left shoulder this week? Reminded me of Sylvia.

I will remind you all [yet again] that he has not finished inside the top 5 in our b&f in 8 seasons. That's what the club (ie: people in the know) think of him.

Take off your rose coloured glasses and realise that Col is the most frustrating player on our list bar none because he has super talent but cannot produce consistently.

Fair crack mate... he's also had one of the most frustrating runs with injury of all our players over that period.

Great point OP. Yeah he's played some poor games over the journey but given his work environment over the past 5 years I'm not complaining.

Brian Royal's head is the one that should be on the chopping block.

Agreed, noticed that, it was bad.

I challenge anyone to be able to play well consistently when they've largely been stationed on a HFF (in our team) for the last 6 years .

Im sorry mate...that alone is just this side of garbage. You make of any position what you will. It requires effort. If the ball wont come to you...get it yourself. Get yourself into a position thats irresistable to others , so much they have to pass it to you or link via you. You have to inject yourself into the game. Great players grab games by the scruff of their necks and make something of it. Col wants the game to come to him often. Hes lazy. When hes bothered its a whole different ba lgame ( literally ) .

Players like Stevie J , Marc Murphy, Dane Swan..Paul Chapman seem to do all right..... a funny commonality about them too.. They all try their f*%#ing guts out for 4 qtrs just about every bloody game.. Col ?? yeah right

Geez, we are a bunch of pessimists, aren't we? MFCSS???

The guy plays a few good games, steadily improving each week after having a bad run with injuries and we collectively trash him to the point where some are calling for him to be traded!

No need for our opponents to play mind games in the media and try and put us down. We're doing a pretty fine job of that ourselves!

Get a grip people.

You've probably interpreted my comment the wrong way BB . My reference to the HFF position was in relation to Sylvia and similarly skilled players . I possibly should have made that a bit clearer .

I never compared Col to Stevie J , Murphy , Swan or Chapman and never would . Maybe your expectations of Sylvia is a tad high , especially if you want to compare him to the above 4 players .

Just on those 4 though , there is no way they could impact the game like they do at their own clubs , if they were stationed on the HFF at our club in the last 5 and a half years . Our delivery into the forward 50 has been terrible and our total amount of entries is much lower than the best sides .

The HFF at our club is your classic definition of 'Starvation corner' (in the last 5 and a half years) . Once again , this is a classic case of judging a player on his draft number . If he went at 15 or 25 he'd be discussed in a way different manner .

Hey , no worries BB . It's just that when leaving comments , it's difficult to remember to be precise (so to speak) . I know I'm still learning on these forums

Keep going Macca you are doing ok.

Aw-shucks :)

I'm over Col being inconsistant...but maybe his broken back hasnt helped this year.

I would still trade him regardless as he isnt going to be the player I thought he would..

Yeah right. He has played 3, 16, 17, 16, 18, 17, 15, 19 and 9 games in his 8 seasons. Averaging 16.6 disposals per game. Yep let's wait another 8 seasons to give him a fair crack.

You should demand more of our players.

And we should demand more of our club, administrators, Footy dept, & medical room to keep things at the tip of the pyramid, re elite sports knowledge & treatments.

No doubt we could have had better results from our players IF our administrations & US,,, were harder giving out the plaudits.

Raise the standard.

I love some of the comparisons with for Col, Chapman being one, Chapman I believe is now 30, been at the top of his game for five years now, which means he started to kill it at 25 to 26, Stevie J needed to be banished for a while etc etc......

Col Sylvia is a very good player who has been hampered with one injury after another and never getting a full pre season under his belt, hopefully those days are behind him and in the next year or two can show people including some of the bemoaners on this board

We have had say five consistent players this year....Jones, Howe, Tom McDonald, Frawley and Garland, the reason they got through the pre season, NAB cup and the first few games without missing a beat....easy really

OMG.

What about others that have had a pre season and NAB cup? Bate, Bennell, Green, Petterd, Jordie, Trengove, Grimes, Moloney, Joel Mac, Jamar. Don't notice any of them setting the world on fire. If you are going to make a sweeping statement then check your facts first. If was a simple case of completing a pre-season we would be on top of the ladder.

Oh right. Your flawed and sweeping argument was that everyone who had a pre-season should have had a great year. All players you name played in Round 1.

Your quote the reason they got through the pre season, NAB cup and the first few games without missing a beat....easy really simply doesn't stack up.

Like i said, check your facts before making an argument.

I did not quote that, it was another demonland poster.

and for the sake of it, in defense of whoever did post that quote, they said that those players didn't miss a beat. Whether they played in round 1 or not, is a totally different thing to missing time during the pre-season, nab cup or the first 'few' rounds.

Keep trying please, its amusing how big this hole is getting.

Ouch!

Let's get back on track.

Colin Sylvia has all the skills, he can take a great grab, kick the ball a mile, run in a straight line and is as strong as a bull. His tackling is one of our best alongside Jones and Mckenzie. Over the years, both injuries and his own discipline have not helped. Even this year, he had a good preseason before the broken vertebvrae impacted him.

Colin must be played in the midfield, and rested fwd or on rotation. Oposition supporters respect his ability and know he is one of our "very few" real dangerous players. back and support Colin, as he will be a KEY to our rebuild. Sylvia, Jones, Trengove, Gysberts, Mckenzie + Viney&another 2-3 new 18yo midfielders will be vital. Our engine room needs to improve.

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.
