New recruiting manager

Rendell has stated that he already wanted to get out recruiting before leaving Adelaide, except he wanted to wait for this "draft of all drafts".

I think MFC, in the position where we don't have our new national recruiting manager until next year, is in the unique position to offer him involvement in this draft he has been waiting for, without wanting a long term commitment in the recruiting caper.

Also we'd have a link with Viney and Craig having worked with Rendell.

I fully endorse this move, if it is to happen.

Fingers crossed.

Ok - but can he play any good? Can we slip him straight into the midfield?

We are supposed to have no debt and a little money put aside, so either get them both or get Rendell till the end of this draft and then Jason Taylor after that.

Why would Eddie want a guy sticking around for the super draft who will be employed elsewhere the following season? is he trying to screw us or partially screw himself, so to speak.

Help me out here...

My thoughts exactly Jose

Things like this seriously make me question WTF they are doing down there. I don't know this guy from a bar of soap and he may be a great identifier of talent but unless he can help us in this year's draft what's the point? If they can get Rendell on a short-term contract (something which sounds way too fanciful to be any likelihood of occuring) great but if we go into this year's draft/trade period with only Viney heading the recruiting department god help us all.

They were trying to poach a bloke and they holding him to his contract. We miscalculated and Collingwood gave us a giant middle finger for taking Neeld, Brown and their physio bloke.

We still have our apparatus in check, it's just the head we are missing. I don't know how crucial that person is, or whether Viney can play that role...

From what I've heard, he's effectively our recruiting manager for the 2012 season.

Exactly.

If he'll be the best man for the job, then I'm happy we'll have him from 2012 onwards, if it's not possible to have him earlier.

In the meantime, we need to put together the best team we can.

We've made some headway there, introducing Lamb.

There may be Rendell to come.

If not, I think we still have a very capable team in place for this year's draft.

He doesn't want to give an opponent a look in. The other part of it is his extreme arrogance. He'd see it as an F off aimed at us.

So how does that work exactly, given that breach of contract would have repercussions? Forgive me for what may seem like a vapid question.

Based on what exactly? We cannot afford to stuff up this draft at all we need to nail every pick. If we don't have a head recruiter in place then we are not giving ourselves the best chance to do this.

We must strike gold in this draft. Seriously large nuggets of gold. Or we are toast.

God I hope Jack Viney is worth what we will likely shell out for him in terms of a pick. We just can't afford for him not to be.

Isn't that Viney's role?

He is respected as an assistant coach, and now is in the area of youth development, and has seen a lot of these kids play from an early age while he was watching his son.

He also has a strong insight into their character that most head recruiters wouldn't have access to.

He was in Europe with the team underthe guise of being there to support his son, but

No, he hasn't been a recruiter before, but that doesn't mean he can't spot talent and doesn't understand what qualities make a kid capable of developing into good player. In fact, his development role gives him a bloody good insight.

I don't see why you have so little faith in him.

Don't really like thinking that we dont have a recruiting guru in there full time right now given what this draft is likely going to have to produce for us to be semi interesting next year and beyond.

I would be tempted to do a full assessment of Rendell, and if he is available and he is a gun, lock him up and cut the other Collingwood guy loose if he cant help us this year. (pending on what sort of paperwork we have put in place with him - dont want breach of contract and massive payout).

Rendell was not in the picture when we made this 'supposed' offer to Collingwood guy, so I think its worth revisiting.

I am not sure why I hold out hope for a good draft outcome this year, when we have proven that we have not had the capability to develop players, but I do, and while that is the case, we need the best to lead us forward.

I don't have faith in him because as you say he ahs no experience as a recruiter and has been given another "job for the boys". If you reckon he can do the job that's your prerogative but I would rather see someone who has made a career out of it instead of someone who has been thrown in there as a stop-gap.

I tend to agree here...no disrespect to T Viney at all....But having had limited success with drafting over the last 5 years when clearly it was the number one priority...we need to have the BEST people scouring the entire planet this year and beyond...

The club has got to be careful here and come clean to the members...People will not fork out thousands of $$$ for memberships if there is any more repeats of this 2012 season...Our list of players is an absolute mess, and people involved have to be made accountable.

I am sick of stop gap solutions...The top clubs do not even know the meaning of such words.

Todd Viney will be a massive plus for us this draft. He has had a long association with many of these boys through Jack. He will be able to tell you more about these kids, both as footballers and as people, than 95% of the recruiters at other clubs. Don't forget Jack V may also be asked for input. We have the great fortune of already being able to pick the brain of a kid we know we are going to draft who has grown up playing footy with and against all these other kids.

I don't think it is a mess. I think it is raw and undeveloped.

But that is beside the point - we were trying to get the best when we tapped up this bloke from Collingwood.

As it happens, the Pies have said 3 is enough when it coems to stolen resources and IP...

We are going with a stop-gap whether you like it or not, the apparatus is still in place and we are relying on Todd Viney's judgement and leadership as the man in charge for this season.

In many respects it is not ideal, but perhaps, in this unscientific science of picking teenagers that we will rely on in the future - Todd Viney will do ok in that regard.

Without getting into arguments - I doubt he would pre-judge a Dustin Martin, or a Jack Darling in this draft.

We can discuss how important the lead recruitment role is if we want to - but remember that they are rarely the boots on the ground. They are usually the ones on the other end of the phone or watching the tapes rather than creating them.

What aspects will Todd find immeasurably difficult?

I guess it is about time we asked this question rather than hand-wring over what we haven't discussed.

IMO we now have a football department that will support, nurture and DEVELOP our picks instead of whatever happened in the past. We are generally all in agreement that we have stuffed up our picks in terms of development. Todd Viney will see this upcoming crop with entirely different eyes to Prendergast. Reason why he had to go. He wasn't on board with the Plan. Todd is on the same wavelength as Neeld and Missen(spelling). I agree the information from Jack as far as on field and off field attitude will be invaluable.

That's fine and it may very well work out - but if it doesn't the club (Schwab, McLardy, the board etc) will have to wear it and will have no-one to blame but themselves. Viney has been exposed to the kids Jack has played with/against but that clearly doesn't cover every potential kid in the draft does it? The club cannot afford to play dice with this draft they have to nail it otherwise continued poor drafting and losing sides will see hardcore supporters and members give up. Football is after all another form of entertainment these days and no-one wants to watch harrowing holocaust movies every single day.

So you think that T.Viney or the head recuiter of any club does it all?????Every team has a team of recruiters covering the whole country and watching every game of footy.......The recruitment of any player would be dicussed by the whole footy club,coaches,FD,.....I also think that the draft is not the be all and end all of the game....It takes about three years to develop these 18 year olds and as we know some just don't make it

rpfc you are accepting a stop gap...when the club is at 0-9 with a % of 51

We have had enough Band Aids & stop Gaps...it is the precise reason the MFC is in the rubbish predicament it finds itself in right now.

When i look at todays AFL ladder with the MFC in 18th position, below GW$ & GC i do not even feel we are part of the AFL Comp anymore.

I do not want hand wringing...i want straight answers from our CEO tbh

This is a bit of mis-information also... Who are the three?

Neeld - yup thats 1.

Who is the second one?

If it's Leigh Brown then thats thats just wrong, retiring players go to other clubs all the time, we didn't poach him from their coaching ranks.

Collingwood is being precious, it happens to every single club out there, we lost Wellman to Essendon AFTER he signed a contract to continue with us apparently.

It is not great, but why isn't it great?

Can we please discuss what Prendergast bought to the table that Viney cannot?

I will start - he has experience in the role. Is that experience what makes or breaks the job?'

Let's discuss it. I'm not going to sit here and listen to people rabbit on about the disaster without telling me what the disaster entails.

We got our physio Gary Nichols from Collingwood.

  • PREVIEW: West Coast

Saturday’s election night game in Perth between the West Coast Eagles and Melbourne represents 18th vs 15th which makes it a tough decision as to which party to favour. The Eagles have yet to break the ice under their new coach in Andrew McQualter who is the second understudy in a row to confront Demon Coach Simon Goodwin who was also winless until a fortnight ago. On that basis, many punters might be considering to go with the donkey vote but I’ve been assigned with the task of helping readers to come to a considered opinion on this matter of vital importance across the nation. It was almost a year ago that I wrote a preview here of the Demons’ away game against the Eagles (under the name William from Waalitj because it was Indigenous Round).  I issued a warning that it was a danger game, based on my local knowledge that the home team were no longer easybeats and that they possessed a wunderkind generational player in Harley Reid who was capable of producing stellar performances playing among men a decade and more older than he.  At the time, the Eagles already had two wins off the back of a couple of the young man’s masterclasses and they had recently given the Bombers a scare straight after their Anzac Day blockbuster draw against the then reigning premiers.

  • NON-MFC: Round 08

Round 08 of the 2025 AFL Season kicks off on Thursday with a must-win game for the Bombers to stay in touch with the top eight, while the struggling Roos seek a morale-boosting upset. Friday sees the Saints desperate for a win as well if they are to stay in finals contention and their opponents the Dockers will be eager to crack in to the Top 8 with a win on the road. Saturday kicks off with a pivotal clash for both sides asthe Bulldogs look to solidify their top-eight spot, while Port seeks to shake their pretender tag. Then the Crows will be looking to steady their topsy turvy season against a resurgent Blues looking to make it 4 wins on the trot. On Election Night a Blockbuster will see the ladder-leading Pies take on the Cats, who are keen to bounce back after a narrow loss. On Sunday the Sydney Derby promises fireworks as the Giants aim to cement their top-eight status, while the Swans fight to keep their season alive. The Hawks, celebrating their centenary, will be looking to easily account for the Tigers who are desperate to halt their slide. The Round concludes on Sunday Night with a top end of the table QClash with significant ladder implications; both Queensland teams are in scintillating form. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons?

The Demons hit the road in Round 8, heading to Perth to face the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium. With momentum building, the Dees will be aiming for a third straight victory to keep their season revival on course. Who comes in and who goes out?

  • REPORT: Richmond

The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.

  • CASEY: Richmond

The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace. They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.
