With his talent, if he developed his intensity and 'want' to be the best he could be, he could be anything. He was clutch today though. Best kick in our team and has all the ability. Become our best player Jack, you clearly can be! One thing to say about Jack Watts. Most of our (rare) wins over the past few years have co-incided with him stepping his game up a notch.

Most of our wins have come against poor sides completely devoid of pressure or physicality. It's hardly a surprise that Watts thrives (at least the attacking part of his game) in those conditions and then there is a snowball effect because his disposals are often clean and result in scores and the goals he kicks. But I see Watts as the icing once others make the cake. Today was slightly more impressive because he put a sword to a weakening opponent instead of getting early goals against a mediocre one.

What was frustrating were the amount of times he ran his guts out to get into position A or space A and his team mate kicked it to another option where we were outnumbered. But I loved his exhausting gut running. I was impressed with his game today because: He had vital possessions in every quarter. His last quarter was outstanding. He took some contested marks. Some of his tackles were very strong. He played a team game. His kicking. It really is a pleasure to watch him kick. And to that female Melbourne supporter behind me who kept screaming out "just kick it Jack" every time he got it, I love the way he holds onto the ball and takes his full 6 seconds to decide... then delivers.

That was easy. Of a similar vein. The qualifier is however I would like to see this as a norm, as a base to further develop. Possibly as he sees he's actually capable of things he'll just do it as second nature. Am pleased for him really. But happily admit to being incredibly frustrated by him. We all hoped Roos might affect a magic touch but fmd he really seems to have it. Still not sure what PR has in mind as JW actual ROLE but its making for much more entertaining and watchable footy.

Watts was superb yesterday, but the fact of the matter is he really only played as well, or close to as well, as he should play every week. He is DEFINITELY working harder, smarter and with more belief, so he is giving himself every opportunity to do this. But on the other hand Jazza, sometimes you gotta let the people have their fun after a win, and if they wanna say they saw Watts walk across the Yarra River then let them. Actually, come to think of it he probably DID do this with Bernie Vince after a night out celebrating last night...

All we talk about is that he plays his role and he did that the entire game and threw himself into things when he needed to. The last quarter was a testament to his workrate that he got to contests that his opponent couldn't after spending the first 3 quarters right on his hammer. The first three quarters was 'the expectation' of all players under Roos' Melbourne - the last quarter was the deliverance on his talent.

Maple Demon 449 Posted May 18, 2014 Posted May 18, 2014 The way Jack has played in the past couple of games is, in a way, why people have been so frustrated with him and so critical. I say this because these games have highlighted what he is capable of when he is on hos game. What we have been annoyed and/or disappointed with is the level of unrealised potential. He isn't the messiah, but he could very well have a decent career. Hopefully this path of improvement continues. He could become the poster boy for the complete buy-in of Roosy's ways if it does.

We can all see he has the tools to be a major player. He just needs to piece it all together, and watching it come together so slowly is incredibly frustrating. Yesterday was a high water mark. 19 disposals, 11 (!) marks, 3 goals straight and 4 tackles is a great game for a high half forward. It's what the likes of Gunston delivers on a regular basis for the Hawks in a far superior side.
