Who is the best commentator, I hate the Commeti/Macc combination and I find most special commentator people like, dermie King, shaw, ect downright rude in assessing players, it's as if they never made a mistake during their careers. Brian Taylor is my pick and it's a shame that he has left Foxtel

Watch/listen to the replay of the Sydney game from 2010. If Bruce and Dennis didn't do anything for you downstairs, I don't know if there's much hope for you!

On the otherhand, Chewbacca and Nanny Fine could've commentated that game and it still would've been like listening to angels.

Gerard Whately, by a country mile. I believe this guy cut his teeth on horse racing, and it shows. His description of the action is precise and first class. He gets a heap of description into a few, well chosen words. Heard him recently on radio broadcasting the cricket. He actually described what was happening. These days, so many of the comentators are so full of themselves that they just prattle on with whatever's on their mind, and totally ignore the action on the field.

Bruce and Dennis should just call the footy and leave the funnies alone

Commetti is good value if you can get used to his irritating voice.

Dwayne Russell is easily the most painful, egotistical [censored] in the media and should not be allowed to call footy.

Dennis has been over-doing the funnies during the last few seasons. Bruce just says what he thinks, and most times people are laughing at him rather than with him.

2 great quotes of Bruce's during that Sydney game;

"OOOOOOOOH, Aussie Boy..."

"They're going to be something the Dees, the DEES ARE GOING TO BE SOMETHING"

And another one (not sure which game) where he thought that when the F50 only had Jurrah and Aussie (and their direct opponents), that LJ & Aussie were like a couple of naughty school kids just running around, such was the awareness of each other and the understanding of each otehrs ability. Gee I'm going to miss those 2 playing together. :(

I always love listening to Rex Hunt on the radio made things a bit more exciting for me but then I knew many ppl who just thought he was annoying and over the top.

Very annoying, particularly if it is your team that was playing, you had no idea where the ball was or who had it until someone kicked a goal.

Commetti is the only commentator. Always has been. The sooner Bruce is done, the better. He's lame, cheesy and past it, as well as hugely irrelevant.

Whateley is awesome. And I reckon Schwabb is another who does better than people say.

I can do without BT. I reckon he has he theatrics, but is very biased.

Kerry O'Keefe is by far the best commentator - I just wished he played 4 games in Melbourne's back pocket and had 36 goals kicked on him. He would have some stories to tell during a footy match!

seconded.

stan alves and tim lane also

Gerard Whately by a mile. He is a professional commentator and it shows.

Bruce was great once - too sugary now. That horrible interview with Dane Swan at the Brownlow last year. Shudder!!

Dennis Commetti is still the b est of the TV guys but I also miss Sandy Roberts.

For pure enterntainment, Rex Hunt. Yeah, I often had no idea who had it or where it ws going but Rex, Huddo and Robert Walls were a great trio.

And I also wish Kerry O'Keefe had played footy. His cricket commentary is very good when he sticks to actual commentary.

Dennis is the best. I also like Huddo, and must give a tick for his commentary of the Swans/Cats final in 2005. It must have been killing him to have to call what transpired in the last few minutes but he remained professional. Gerard Whateley is very good as well.

Agreed on almost everything there 'Bossdog' . I don't mind Dermie in small doses . He's got some good opinions but goes too far sometimes . Roos is getting better as well .

I think Foxtel are taking the Channel 7 feed so we'll still get BT . I like his humour .

I put the stereo on when Dwayne is on ! Otherwise I start nodding off .

Cheers

Interesting so many people saying they like Gerard Whately, I think he is one of the most annoying commentators of all time.

Quite agree , he is a know-all with an irritating " whiney " voice His idea of racecalling is to scream in top gear all the way through. Although he has a wide sporting knowledge i was surprised that he knew nothing about the switch of athletics to Albert Park from Olympic Park when the subject was raised by a listener during his regular monday appearance on John Faines's morning show on 774.

Whateley is awesome.

My vote would have to go to Whateley too. I believe he was close to leaving the ABC at the end of last year. It will be a sad day if he does ever leave. Can't stand listening to the commercial stations.

As a kid in the 80's used to love Peter Booth and Smokey Dawson, with special comments from Doug Bigelow on ABC Radio. Absolutely sensational call - and great around the grounds men too - Swan McKay, Len Thompson, Michael 'Gladys' Moncrieff, Doug Heywood (who used to do TV as well). Good times!

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo
