If we trade those picks, it will be for a mid.

If we use those picks, we will use the highest pick on a mid.

We need a good midfield before we worry about getting a small forward.

Exactly my point.

Agree with those saying classy midfielders are the priority in terms of holes in our list.

A quality small forward would be nice, but is more icing on the cake than a high priority.

Personally, I would go for mids in the draft rather than trade for one, as they seem to easier to predict and can usually step in and have an impact within a couple of years. In saying that, will be interesting to see how free agency pans out.

Our needs aren't mutually exclusive.

We definitely need some more midfield class but I agree we need that 1 small crumber who interacts with the taller players who can bring the ball to ground. Jurrah is good at playing that role at times but he also offers more than that so to pidgeon hole him in that role is unnecessary given our options. Surely with a 2nd round pick or a trade we could get someone in who can perform that role in an acceptable dedicated fashion. Short players who can go in and under inside forward 50 are an asset as they put their opponents under pressure not to give away head high frees and they garner more value out of the talls and add more options to their play.

Enter James Magner.................

Yeah mate I get ya, good work with the stats I was just adding to them. Jurrah should have a good year. But I think Aaron Davey is our man - he can sure match if not out do those that we've talked about.

Bailey said alot of things though didnt he....

Davey is very good at his best i agree and might get that back this year but he is getting on in terms of AFL age so i just think it would be good to see whats around and rpfc i would not use any of the compo picks for a small forward you can get them with a trade or 2nd rounder i to think we need mids but i was just thinking one good small forward would help our quest going forward.

Which picks?

I was getting ahead of myself.

The comp picks. People want to use our currency on things; a small forward, a lamp, a fullsize mirror, potential star mids, etc.

I want a star mid.

30 posts and no-one has noticed that we may be able to get a limited free agent this year. Try looking at experienced smalls that have been at their clube 8 years or more, and are coming out of contract.

Jurrah. That is all.

Maybe even Blease, Tapscott, Jetta, that Lawrence bloke. The moral of the story is if we can't create one from current stock and are going to pick one up in the draft it better be laaaate!

Yeah I get your point mate. Having said that Davey is 28 I think, Milne is nearly 32 and still going strong. Lets hope he fullfills the role.

Anybody who suggests we use our compo picks towards a small crumber one way or the other needs their head read. I can't find any posts though where such a suggestion has been made.

Midfield class is surely at the forefront of our compo picks.

Depending on how many we delist though we will have options with subsequent picks and possibly traded players (but that remains to be seen).

The OP has highlighted IMO a genuine issue which needs to be addressed. The mere notion of Davey being moved forward shows how much importance Neeld shows towards that role but Davey won't be around for ever. Lawrence might be an option but the percentages are not on his side. If we can't manufacture a decent prospect with what we have we need to multitask come end of year as we did last year getting some hardened mids and a KPF.

I understand that fully but my point is also not many make it. If one is about sure but if you look at stats we're probably better off hoping for Davey or developing a Blease, Nicholson, Jetta, Bennell or even Magner would fit the role perfectly - providing he can kick!

Having decent key forwards who always play in front will help whoever we have as small/mid forwards . We've got Clark who will hopefully fill the bill but we need at least 1 or 2 more .

Lets face it , our forward line has been largely dysfunctional for the last few years so we've got a fair way to go . Big strong targets should be our 1st priority . If we get that right the rest should fall into place .

For instance , Jeff Farmer was probably a better player because he mainly played with good key forwards . I reckon we've got a number of blokes who could play the small forward role quite well , we just need our key forwards to fire .

Oh , and our delivery to the forward line needs to be more accurate and direct .

Yeah , I know I'm probably dreaming , but I prefer them over nightmare's !

Ok, then I was answering a question that hadn't been asked yet.

I am very good at that.

Stop the nonsense at the source.

It's a periphery problem in my view. Either Davey does it, or a kid like Blease, or a kid from rounds 2 onward in the next draft, or some fringe player from another club, or Jurrah does it by himself.

Whatever the answer it will mean little in the grand scheme.

We need a star midfield to get the ball down there to make this thread relevant.

Well in relative terms to top class mids I would agree it's not as big a priority but in isolation as an issue of discussion I would disagree - no problem each to their own.

It is this kind of sentiment where this site suffers IMO.

This is as relevant as any other thread. Do we dimiss any discussion about our rucks (they won't have any top class mids to palm the ball to), do we dismiss any discussion about our defence (they won't have any top class mids to kick to)?

Our forward line is an important part of the ground - especially as we develop a forward press. We've discussed the need for a tall target for some time ( to the point where some promoted the idea of pick 12 for David Hale), such discussion didn't lose it's relevance simply due to our need for more midfield class. A small crumber is another component of our forward line, the club needs one beyond Davey and the discussion of this is as relevant as ever.

Completely agree, provided we can get one.

You need the midfield to get the ball to the tall forwards, and the tall forwards to crash packs and bring the ball to ground, and provide your crumbers with the oportunity to crumb and get goals.

You can't put the cart before the horse.

Yet I'd still take Cyril Rioli any day over Rhys Palmer.

I think the same mate of course it is relevant all the talk that you need a mid before we look at a small forward is not right if you are missing a key position you look at all your options we are not that simple as a club that we say no we cant look at this cruming forward we still need a midfield star. We need to fill a few holes on the list and we can attack as many holes as we can with the drafts and trade period along with free agency. This type of thinking will not happen in a football club they will explore all options to speed up the progress and development of the team we also have a strong hand to get the mid we all want with our compo so with our 2nd rnd we can look at a crumer or even trade for it. Cheers

Unless we are in the football dept any discussion we have here at all is abit of a toss .

Who shall we draft , who shall we drop , who gets delisted , who's cpt ....... Pfft .

Opinions is all they are and none are more relevant than the next .

Maybe some are but .......

Still thought we should've given Maric more games/time to fill this role... i wonder if Neeld would've kept him around?

Neeld was appointed before the draft period (I think?), so he would have been part of his delist.

Jetta .

Can kick a goal ,is good below his knees .

I think he will come into his own this year .

I agree. I see more in Jetta than I do in Bennell, and I really hope he can get over his shoulder injury.

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
