Unfortunately Trapper Mk.2

Sylvia is the ultimate sack tickler. Can take a mark can kick 60 metres, strong body and does not deliver. After 8 seasons and now in his 9th season, with Syvia its WYSIWYG. He's a just footballer with periodic off field problems.

He is nowhere near Trapper's class. At his best Trapper was sublime. Pity it happen far far too often. Sylvia is just a tease of talent that has had too many people sucked in for too long.

Any desire to trade him is mixed with the feeling that he aint worth much at the table. And before any one suggests, another club would have to be truly daft to overpay for him. He has been in the system so long every club would know his card of tricks.

Admittedly it was a game when Bailey wasn't overly concerned about winning for reasons known.

I dont think we were ever close to winning that day. And I suggest it was MFC that wasnt concerned. Bailey coached to instructions from above..

The only thing he lacks is upstairs and that is a damn shame and an indictment on both himself and the club. I have no doubt if he began his career at another team (like Sydney, Hawthorn or WCE) he would be one of the best players running around.

I also think he lacks peripheral vision and it's close ally, awareness. He reminds me a lot of Kossi at the saints in this regard and maybe the reason why both these guys frustrate supporters. They both seem to have everything going for them but just don't quite get it. Yes part is mental but I think the other stuff is there with both of them.

Col should be at Casey this week and, if he is, I doubt we'll see him again because he won't get the message or learn. Perhaps Sydney could do something with him? But they don't overpay so I doubt we'll get much for him. Typical Melbourne tragedy.

Once a player misses a pre-season, or its severly interrupted, they are behind the 8-ball all year.

He should have spent 2 weeks coming back via VFL

As for Sylvia, I think he should of started in the VFL coming back from injury, but he didn't so it is open season on him I guess. Admittedly, I have always been sucked in by him, think I even plonked a bit of cash on him 1 year for the Brownlow as my smoky, I probably would of been able to write that off at tax time as a charity donation.

Can't remember where I heard it, but I did note that with this type of injury, supposedly whilst he is now right to play without doing any further damage, he'd still be experiencing considerable pain.

Not sure how accurate it is though.

But I doubt we can really draw any bows of Sylvia not buying-in to Neeld's gameplan at this early stage.

The propensity to run one way has been ingrained in Sylvia over a long time, and it will take a lot of work to unlearn.

He's still the best FOOTBALLER on the list, not the best football brain when it comes to sticking to structures and 1%ers

I am a big believer that Col Sylvia is a midfielder not a pure fowarder. He just doesnt impact the game playing as a forward only, put him in the midfield for the next 3 weeks rest him up forward but 75% of his game time in the middle.

I agree if he were at WC or Sydney he would be in the top 25 players of the afl. Anyone who thinks MFC issues has anything to do with the list or recruiting are kidding themselves its player development (including culture) we have struggled to get the best out of our talented and not so talented for many years

Hearing Neeld discuss him on the radio and remembering the suspension from pre season I think CS is on very thin ICE.

I get the feeling that in Neelds eyes he needs a big season from here on or it is good night nurse come trade time.

Sylvia needs to learn to run both ways and account for his opponent.

Having to stick to defensive structures is limiting his output.

In the modern game where teams of 18 players flood forward and back into each others FWD 50, its a misnomer that Sylvia gets typecast as purely a forward. I agree with the next 3 weeks....the trouble is he will be doing it at Casey.

Can I remind everyone that the guy fractured his back a week before the season started...

He was bed ridden for 3 weeks and its a small miracle that the guy is actually playing football.

If this injury had occurred to any of the above posters then You would be lucky to be running let alone playing football.

He broke the small vertabrae close to the spine and will be stiff for months. You only need to look at the vision of how he did it, by crashing into a pack, to see that he is not A-OK.

Im a bit disappointed in some posters views on this. I guess Ill have to get over it....

There are plenty of others to burn rather than those ACTUALLY injured and playing like Col and JT.

And let me add, for those who say youre 100% ok if you go out there, what F%%&ing tripe. If the coach says he needs you to grin and bear it, what choice do you have? LJ's choice? Sorry coach I could do with a confidence boosting run at Casey. Thanks pal.

So if he's struggling so bad with the injury then why would it surprise you if he gets dropped because of it? Is it better for Sylvia to be getting 6 touches every week with a crook back or someone like Blease coming in and taking the opportunity while we get one of our important players right? It's not like there's finals on the line so I VERY much doubt Neeld is "forcing" him to go out there with a dodgy back.

You are right. I dont think he should be playing either. But it is worth looking at the issue in that light.

I know Glenn Lovett would play with injuries to his hands or back and it would frustrate me to hear "supporters" give him a bake. But sometimes a class player is left to make the call.

And i would prefer to think that they are making the call for the good of the team. Not always, I accept. Jimmy and the Ox fer instance...
