Very disappointing year & equally so as captain. Can he improve? That shouldn't b hard! Capt? No thankyou! Has he signed yet? 1yr contract with 2nd based on performance. Has ALWAYS left ME cold at times, just something to do with body language i spose, like you say Chook, about the smile.

I'm sure Brad would be one of the first to admit that 2011 wasn't his best year. First year as captain would have presented with many challenges and an insight into what is also required as Captain.

1st for contested marks tells us he is trying. He's more a finisher and even there his kicking for goal really hasn't been outstanding in 2011. There's been plenty of crunch time moments when a goal has been needed and supporters have been felt let down by inaccuracy at pivotal moments in 2011.

Supporters have willed him to make statements by getting himself involved and show leadership by stamping himself in the clinches. Whilst we witnessed the odd tackle etc, it's just not part of his game or his nature. Which isn't really what supporters come to expect from their captain IMO. They want to see some bash and crash, in and under, leading the way with communication - positive body language.

I think most if not all supporters realise this isn't the Brad Green we'd come to expect as captain - supporters expected more in times of need. They don't expect their leader to go missing.

I'm sure most would agree that they hope B.Green has a much better positive year in 2012 and more influence in games. That he learns from 2011 of what is expected. He may not necessarily remain captain, for we are yet to find that out. But importantly, I feel supporters generally wish for a greater and more positive output from him next year in a way that shows him lead the way in terms of performance more than anything. Whether he is captain or not.

I've said enough already.

He can play a couple more years and be a very good Melbourne person.

But without one particular thing.

Whether it was the burden of captaincy, especially in a year where really strong and decisive leadership was needed, or merely a long form lapse, Brad's 2011 was a shocker by anyone's standards.

Will the one on one with Neeld reveal Amy hidden secrets? I am sure we will never know, but IMMHO he should show leadership by relinquishing the captaincy (or have it removed) and concentrating on playing consistently well especially kicking goals.

Beamer got his VC stripped for an off field indescretion and took it on the chin and went about resurrecting his reputation.

Should not Brad Green face the reality that although he did no "wrong" to the club, he should be judged that he did not do the right things as Captain. Looking at Junior's captaincy over the two years of horrific football, there was little ( always a little bit on here) question as to whether he led by example and was worthy of the post.

I certainly wouldn't cry myself to sleep if that happened.

Uninspiring this year as both a captain and a player. A decade of effort, and talent, before then. If he can get his head in the right space, his value as a medium sized forward who can still take a strong contested grab is still important to a young team. Hopefully the new coaching team can turn it around for him.

That aside, a good deal at the trade table would not disappoint me.

He'll get another year, but I'd expect that Neeld will drop him if he's still out of form, and he needs a good year to get another year's extension.

Player bashing this year has been great (Davey, Scully, Morton). I thought Green should have been stripped from captain earlier in the year. I have had a change of heart. Would it really be a problem if Green was given one more year as our skipper. One average year = take note, two averge years = take action.

Look a Nick Maxwell for example. I see him out on the ground and think, wow, he's the captain of a premiership side?(IMO) But all the collingwood boys rate him as skipper. Just like ours seem to rate Green.

Its not bashing to expect players to perform to a standard and be held accountable when they dismally fail. Some are held to the bar others are put above itbecause thats where theyd expect people to place them. Having done so Brad's star is sorely dimming.

I really dont understand all the hero worship that goes on in football. I , like anyone can marvel at a spectacle and addmire real talent and ability but they are just footballers. They are a priveledged lot getting to do somethign they love ( id suppose, I mean to they do it under durres?) and get incredibly well remunerated for it.

Theyre not our mates, theyre not some good bloke down the local footy club they are professionals. Those who seek to extract a living by some craft will be asked to do it properly and when you dont you will be castigated. .

Negotiating the best deal for your self "is hardly having tickets" on yourserlf . Holding out and getting the best terms is simply good business, unless ofcourse it goes horribly wrong which we rarely see. As much as i hate to say it it is a business and nothing more.

He's also taken millions of dollars from the Club. While he may have deserved that money, I have certainly not demanded as much from the club as he has, and therefore should not be required to "put in" as much as him.

Holding out and getting the best terms is simply good business.

If that's true, then it is also good business to hold someone (especially a leader) accountable for an entire year's worth of bad performance.

at the end of the day if he doesnt play for us in 2012, it will become a major issue for us, both on and off the field. We'll lack on field experience and the media will have a field day over it and the fact a club captain walked out on us. IMO it would be similarly as detremental to us as the Junior issue or Scully saga

Disappointing year. I think there should have been a stage where he put his hand up and volunteered to find his form at Casey. Might have been embarassing but if it's in the team's best interests then that's what a leader does.

The captaincy comes across like a burden considering he was in red-hot form last year. If taking away the captaincy brings back the Brad Green from 2010 then let's get it done.

I can't disagree with the sentiments from BB59 above. Some of us have these fanciful notions of loyalty in footy, and I'm guilty as much as the next bloke, but those days are long gone. And unfortunately in all of this, the only people who show the loyalty here are the supporters. Not the club, not the players and not the officials. Just us. So surely it is fair to expect that when we put money into a club, which doesn't really offer anything in return, the people who are very well paid and priviliged to play for the club are expected to perform to a level which is in the vicinity of what they are paid. I have enjoyed Brads career and cheered him on a million times, and I hope like all hell he remains at the club, but he has not done himself any favours as far as receiving special treatment this year and that is just the way that it is. Captain does not become him, so lets just go back to the way things were and hopefully this releases some pressure so that he can relax a bit more and concentrate on performing to the level that we need him to, and the level that he needs to for the sake of his own career.

Firstly, I think H_T sums it up perfectly in post #5. It was a season I'm sure Greeny would like to forget, from both playing and leadership perspectives.

Now please forgive me a bit of rambling:

I supported Greeny's appointment as captain in 2011 ... after all, he had a stellar 2010 on the field, and had shown sound 'lead from the front' credentials without actually shouldering the responsibilities of the top job. For me he was the obvious choice!. However, I do recall pondering (briefly), how quickly he had gone from being voted off the Leadership Group by his peers in 2008, only to be reinstated 12 months later, to being appointed captain in 2011. Clearly, it seemed at the time, he had addressed his perceived weaknesses as a leader, and in the eyes of his team-mates and coaches, he was ready to step up to the top job. That's really quite a turn-around in a short space of time.

I recall some revealing interviews with Greeny at the time he was demoted from the Leadership Group (or maybe it was when he was appointed as skipper). He talked about his introverted personality, and how he needed to work hard to be more assertive, on and off the field.

Now, reflecting back on his first year as captain, it seems obvious to me that Greeny was trying so hard to be a good captain, that he lost sight of the fundamentals of playing good football. This weighed so heavily on him that the harder he tried, the worse things became. Simple things, like kicking routine goals, became very difficult as the pressure mounted.

Whilst leadership can be learned (I think Neita and Junior started from a fair way back and learned as they went along), it's doubly difficult for someone with Greeny's personality type.
