Our compo picks are like gold

I think it was a big heartache losing one of the best young players in the country but this could prove a blessing.

I would like to know what you think We should do with our compo. I think having Viney Junior coming in and with Trengrove we have the making of a top 4 midfield. If we keep our picks we can hope to try find a fast running outside player with class. But this could take more time and you never really know with picks 10 and maybe 14 and with Adelaide wanting to get their hands on Viney Junior they might make us use one of our first picks. So I think

We should not gamble on this and trade on the Scully compo and get a readymade player who is ready for our assault on the top 4 and a 13th flag. With the GWS having all the power next year there is a lot of great players holding out their contracts to get a big pay day. Having this compo we are in a strong position to attack. so think we could find a readymade leader were we have been a bit weak since the great Junior McDonald was sent away and Brad Green yet to show he has what it takes and he is around 31 years old. But he has been a great player.

I think this will be the best time to put the icing on the cake for this GREAT football club. What would you do?

PLAYERS OUT OF CONTRACT IN 2012 THAT I'M AWARE OF:

* Sharrod Wellingham

* Steele Sidebottom

* Scott Pendlebury

* Dayne Beams

* Luke Ball

* Brendon Goddard

* Bernie Vince

PLAYERS OUT OF CONTRACT IN 2012 THAT I'M AWARE OF:

* Sharrod Wellingham - not worth it

* Steele Sidebottom - one pick

* Scott Pendlebury - both picks

In my opinion, we should go after the really good players. Beams and Sidebottom types aren't A grade which is what we want to bring in.

This also isn't an extensive list atm, but a good thought.

I would be happy enough to go to the draft, players we have gotten in the early to mid teens recently include Grimes, Frawley, Gysberts

Prior to this though it was Bate, Dunn

The other thing is can we bring in another BIG name with our salary and many players beginning to expect wage increases through their 20's?

Maybe with Jamar and Green on the Vets list?

Yes just a great problem to have for us. Thought its a good topic and a big problem for BP and the team to look at in 2012 go dees

Some names to consider for 2012. The A-grade potential players will run deeper than this year (possibly deeper than any previous draft). I think we use our compo picks next year (no way will Viney get beyond our first rounder) and potentially fill our remaining holes in the list with the young guns on offer. Hope like hell that Port and Gold Coast win more than 4 games, don’t think I could deal with GC getting 2 of the first 3 picks after they jagged O’Meara.

It's not about Viney getting past a first rounder it is about a club with a pick below us bidding this pick for Viney, if we finish 12th this year if the clubs below us don't think Viney is worth a top 6 pick it will cost us our second round pick. We have committed to Viney unless we finish in the bottom 4 I doubt any club will let us get away with not using our first round pick.

Depending on how good Mitch Clark turns out to be, we still need a Top Line CHF to contend the top 4 and beyond. Viney will be a beauty.

Watts is now not that person in the next couple of years wyl?

If not what is his role?

Charlie Watts will be a massive weapon up forward O.D. but i have never looked at him as a CHF. He is to mobile. That said i am really looking forward to what coach Neeld does with Watts, he knows what enormous potential he has, which i believe is why he put the rocket up him a few weeks back.

Give Watts 2 more years in the gym. He'll be a beast and the prototype modern CHF.

And Cook is coming through, dont know how he will end up, i am openly a big fan of the kid.

But Clark, Cook and mobile Watts could be great great Forward line to start with

You could be right Range R. I am sure Neeld will want a player like Cloke at some point. I see Watts more like Goddard, but that won't stop him kicking goals. At least now we have options. Gone are the days when poor Matty Bate was our designated CHF! I really hope Matty fires now the fwd line is more settled.

Don't hold your breath with Cook JT.

He will not have much of a pre season with the hip injury he had late this year.

I will not be surprised if he does not show for Casey til May.

IMO most of 2012 will be a wipe out for him unfortunately.

Perhaps a game or two at the end of 2012 if he comes on faster than I think.

I struggle with him having any impact at senior level before 2014.

Happy to trade, but not for relative scrubbers* like Beams.

*That might be harsh, but we're talking quality picks.

I've been thinking about the compo picks too. It'll be interesting to see how and when they're used.

The thing that I'm unsure about is how many other compo pick are out there? With next years draft touted as another superdraft, how many of the compo picks will be used? And what effect will that have on our compo picks if we used them?

I guess the thing to keep in mind is that the picks don't have to be used straight away. We have 5 years (I think) in which to use them.

Are we better off holding back using them for the next 2-3 years, until such stage that we're really in contention, and then use them to plug obvious holes in our list?

Absolutely. Having been burnt once, we must pick winners with these selections and nothing less.

Me too Rogue would take Pendlebury but he is staying at the pies or going to GWS we cannot afford him.

Besides we have enough Tatts already the pies can keep Beams.

That is a bit harsh Rogue. I think Beams could develop into another Scotty Thompson. He's still very young.

Dont expect him to make an impact until he is around 21yo tbh OD

Next year i will be happy if he enforces himself upon VFL games

The year after pushing AFL as we push up the ladder

He is only 19 so i dont expect a 19yo KPP to walk in, even Watts was so so until what 20 and he got gifted games early.

Edit - and i watched him at VFL level which impressed me, how much he plays like Watts is surprising really, just doesnt venture so far down the ground like Watts can do, plays around the 50, really good disposal.

    THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

    In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

    RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

    One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
