Was he unlucky, or were his team mates?

... or was it simply a case of bad timing on his part to arrive at Carlton a few years before the salary cap scandal and a deep financial crisis saw the club plummet into arguably its worst situation since its inception - the Blues had hitherto never been wooden spooners in their entire history. 

In the beginning, Fevola was fashioned in the image of the then club president who did nothing to discourage the culture of booze, mysogeny and arrogance at the place. When the wheels fell off and Elliott left the scene, Fevola was the club's only star player - he won AA selection, Coleman Medals and the adoration of all the supporters and this gave him licence to get away with behaviour that would not be tolerated at well run professional clubs. His luck ran out under a new regime at the club that aspired to professionalism and introduced new stars. Then came the Brownlow Night at Crown that put an end to it as far as Carlton was concerned.

Things only got worse when he arrived at Brisbane and discovered he could still get away with his errant behaviour. There were more incidents until the drunkenness of New Year's Eve got him sacked from the Lions.

I think his cards were marked by then. He had lost far too much both physically and mentally and the game was changing. Despite his creditable attempts at rehabilitation and the goals he kicked at Casey and in the NT, his dash was done. 

As Caroline Wilson pointed out in her recent Age article, players like the Fev and Andrew Lovett have run out of brownie points. Today should confirm that.

Regardles of his antcis off-field, and your own personal opinion of him, today we saw the final nail in the coffin of one of the great Full Forwards of recent time. Sadly for Fev, he won't get the send-off that football-wise, he probably deserved.

In revisiting this thread I came across your post- and I have one question for you - you most surely be dreading the possibility of us taking Travis Tuck?

What a strange question you ask. There is absolutely no correlation between Travis Tuck & Fevola!

One has been a serial pest and general [censored] for at least a decade. The other was basically crying out for help. Fevola had his last chance with the Bears and totally blew it. I have no sympathy. Travis Tuck was pretty much hung out to dry by the AFL because of this very dangerous 3 strike policy. I hope he gets all the assistance he needs. But in the end, its only up to Travis. IF Tuck had been recruited I would not be worried at all. Fevola on the other hand....

What a disgrace that nobody picked up Fevola in the draft today. This guy has played 10 years at the highest level, won Coleman medals and would be worth 3 goals a game to our club. That he likes a few drinks and a bit of a gamble doesn't mean anything because we are drafting him to kick goals, not be a nun.

This pathetic attitude of only drafting choirboys is exactly why we haven't won a flag in over 45 years, and we'll continue to fail forever until we draft Fev.

If Jai Sheahan doesn't ever kick 100 goals in a season then I'm going to be calling for Prendergast, Neeld and Schwab's heads. Even if he does, we should have drafted Fev too and then we'd have two players that kick 100 goals in a season!

What a strange strange post. I think Williams is a great pick up and could be a long term goalkicker for us. Fev would not have been.

We went for big bodies to complement our already good young talent. i love the look of our list and coaching panel right now. can not be in better shape as far as I'm concerned.

But we're always drafting for the future. Fev has proven that he's a super-mega-champion. Imagine a forward line of Fev, Clark and Watts, with Howe and Jurrah. Fev is a goalsquare full forward, so we'll just empty out the forward 50 and kick it to him, while we get our other 4 tall forwards to play outside 50. Then we can kick it to Fev who will kick 100 goals.

Every idiot knows that Fevola is amazing, but he's been kept out of it by the AFL elite. They just can't stand that someone from a humble background like Fev can become such a superstar while private schoolboys like Watts still haven't kicked 100 goals after 3 years.

Fev is a real man. The AFL just can't accept that. And Vlad is just covering for his love children because Brisbane, one of his interstate clubs, were too stupid to keep him. When Fev walked out on Brisbane the AFL made shady deals with clubs to make sure that he wouldn't play again because Brisbane were embarrassed.
