Gysberts is unfortunately way overated on this forum.

Reminds me of Dunn and Bate when they first started and how much

hype there was around them both.

I think Gys has really been under the hammer this preseason with the workloads expected of the players. A few weeks behind the other players from the reports that I have read on here

I dont think anyone has made that statement in this thread on Gys

You have only said in 100 words or more what most have said.

FWIW, he is 20yo and played only 18 games in 2 years. In that time he was managed to scoop 2 Rising Star nominations from few appearances. I think criticism of his kicking is a little pre mature as a young kid in an overwhelmed midfield finds his feet. There is enough to be excited about with this player as he matures.

There is no doubt that this guy has ability, however, he isn't a great trainer and will have to improve his stamina dramatically to become an elite player and he may even drop out of the top 24 .

Started with injury and has had a bout of flu or some like a few weeks ago. The injury didn't allow him to get in the gym time needed to build him up so he is behind in development, the illness may explain some of the indifferent performance. Even the ball magnet he is was not getting any ball and that's a concern but I would like to see a full season from him, a very tall inside mid, ball magnet who seems to make good decisions. A wait and see for me.

Brock faded away after injuries unfortunately.

In his earlier years, and especially 2006 he was a very

valuable part of our midfield.

For some reason people are claiming that 'sky is the limit

for Gysberts. Claiming that he has the potential to be elite.

I can't see anything elite about him apart from his ability to

win the ball in close. How many players do we have on our list

that also have the ability to win the ball in close?

I'm not writing him off. But I think people have ridiculous expectations

of this kid just because he managed to get high possession numbers

in his first couple of games. It's absurd. He has so many weaknesses.

We could have made a better choice at number 11.

the big question here is does he have the urgency needed?

can this kid run down an opponent and cause a turn over?

can he follow up on his disposals for a 2nd, 3rd, 4th effort?

can he smother the ball as an opponent tries to kick it?

at the moment, i dont think he does

He get's the footy stmj, that is a very good starting point for a mid. He also has very good peripheral vision and exceptional hands. This kid will make it I reckon, just may need to tick another box or to to be a staple in a Neeld midfield.

For an AFL footballer, you have got to be able to do more than win

the ball in close dandeeman.

He has quick hands yes, but he has below average kicking, defensive

running, endurance, speed, strength, tackling, smothering etc etc.

Potentially elite footballers do not possess many (if any) below average attributes.

We need to draft some kids with elite kicking skills.

Look at hawthorns list. What a balance of attributes they share.

Draft? do we really want to draft a player only to wait 5 years for him to show us somthing.

hawks have brought a number of players more than drafting recently.

If they can keep they're injury count down for the next few years,

they will win multiple flags.

We need kids that can kick.

2009 Draft Camp Test Results:

Kicking test (six kicks, scored 1-5 points)

1. Gary Rohan 23 points 77% efficiency

=2. Dustin Martin 22 points, 73% efficiency

=2. Jordan Gysberts

Maybe he lacks a bit of composure at the moment but I'm tipping that his kicking will improve with more games. This isn't helped by the fact that he has poor endurance at the moment and that a lot of his possessions are in heavy traffic/contests. With more experience I think his kicking won't be too much of a worry

He might have meant 'weekend plans'?

Then his post goes from "going way too early" to "stating the bloody obvious". Not like you to give undue credit rpfc!

what don't you understand silly billy?

when brock left for the blues we got pick #11...we used that that secure gysberts. It has been a common point of discussion since Gysberts started playing afl.

It's billy. I don't go around saying d!ckhead disco do I?

Wha tI don't understand is your patting on the back that we picked up a player, with pick 11, that is better than Brock McLean. Yes, I understand that we got pick 11 for Brock, which is where we chose JG, but I would like to think that we got the better end of that deal. Put it this way, if Carlton offered us the last pick in the rookie draft and picked me, I think the MFC would still be in front.

What I really like about the kid is that his football is instinctive, you can't teach that. You either have or you don't. What I also noticed this year is that he can also take a good grab. Give him a strong body and endurance to match and this kid could be anything. I'm seriously excited by the GYS.

Needs to build up - has all the right skills and instincts to be a real gem.

Hopefully Craig and Missen will get his body right ... then....wham!!

Joel Corey mk II. Will be in our top 2-3 midfielders by the end of next year. Huge upside as long as his body holds up.

Gysberts walked into the Afl and managed mid-20s possessions immediately .

He is a ball magnet and has good awareness .

Still physically a teen and not really a "unit" big enough to play on the ball all day .

Training photos show he has put on a bit of weight .

Doesn't have any major defects except possibly endurance which is man made anyway .

Could be anything .

Has the critical and elusive quality that genuine ball handlers need . TIME .

People are implying that he could be a star after a few games. Yes. I'm sure I have heard the words 'star', 'gun' in other threads.

Me neither!

Well I remember.

Maybe it's something to do with age old timer. ; )

You and Nasher seem to be on the same page with the memory business.

...and maybe you are on your own in the hyperbole industry... :)

I agree I exaggerated a little with the words I used.

Touche.

However, I still believe people love to talk up our young players a ridiculous amount. Gysberts being one.

Comparisons to Joel Corey, Pendles, even Dal Santo. I mean really.

Haha STMJ, I'm with you all the way with your thoughts on Gysberts, and how people get lovers nuts about players that have a couple of reasonable games early in their career.

Was thinking on Saturday night about leaving Davis on Hale, and how it was a "learning experience" for the kid. FMD, I would've been putting Sellar on him right from the start, because I'm fcuked if I think he (Sellar) is a walk up start for Round 1, and it would've been good to see how he went against a 1/2 reasonable opponent (Hale is not that good people). Yet there are a lot who are head-over-heels with Sellar on here! He was delisted by a club last year, we picked him up with pick 50-something, and he hasn't shown a great deal in the NAB Cup, but some had him locked based on what they saw of him at training!!!!

James Sellars stats vs Collingwood: 13 disposals, 3 tackles, 100% efficiency! (the only player on the night to register 100%)

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo
