Mark Neeld

Real Demon

I like the appointment and think its what we need. What I also like is the lengths both he AND MM went through in order to come up with this decision. Clearly both he and Mick are sure that Neeld has made the right decision and that hes certainly ready to come here. Melbourne HAD to get this one right, there were no second chances here and im sure we did enough to give ourselves the best opportunity in ensuring weve made the right decision.

Anyone else get the feeling perhaps He was the one that MM believed should be the next coach of Collingwood. I reckon Neeld is ready to prove that he was the man to go to rather than a fairytale in Buckley

But listening to his interviews, he looks to be going about this the right way. Hes got a very good rap from around the league, especially from MM and he already knows what we need to improve on. He knows we have the talent and if he can add the much needed structure to our game play, we can already start improving on where we are and become where we should be

It seams that for a while now the players have been told they will be amazing and theyve been waiting around for it to happen, but now we actually have someone with a few non-negotiables to ensure it happens and show them that it takes hard work to become premiership players, not just talent. I hope the boy realise theyre in for the hardest pre season of their lives!!!!!

We weren't able to get an 'experienced' coach, even though we tried for Clarkson, and with Eade, Laidley and Craig all available. Mick had to take a year off, and Ross didn't take us into consideration - preferring Freo.

So we had to throw out plan 1- going for an experienced coach (if that was ever truly Gary's plan) and go for option 2 - find the best assistant coach in the land and get him to Melbourne before he is picked up by someone else.

It appears both Adelaide and Melbourne were interested in signing Neeld, so a decision was requested asap by the club, regardless of Neeld's involvement with Collingwood's push for the flag. He weighed up the merits of both lists and chose us.

My initial preference was for a recognised hard nut like Scott Burns, partly because that seems to be the mould that produces successful coaches, and our 'bruise-free' football image needed fixing. Burns has the reputation of being a tough physical competitor, whereas Neeld was a taller and more lightly built, and didn't have a reputation of being one of the league's hard men of the'90s.

Mark Robinson hinted at this in an interview with Mick yesterday, and Mick chopped him up. MM pointed out that you couldn't

get two more different coaches than Sheedy and Mal Blight, yet both achieved the ultimate success. Interesting to note that the one thing Neeld wants from his team is hardness.

Matthews also said that he was not sure if Neeld was ready to coach a senior team 2 years ago, so he moved Neeld to manage the midfield. MM now reckons he has no doubt Neeld is ready. Unlike Hird, Neeld has served a long apprenticeship.

  • 1 year later...

It is now 24 hours since the news broke and I have to say guys I was absolutely under whelmed by the appointment.

My intial reaction was We could not get or afford the real thing so we got his proxy!

He is now the coach and like it or lump it I will have to get used to it.

Sorry for being the only negative on here

But I will wait and see.

With this appointment I am firmly it the actions speak louder than words camp.

It may well be that I am weighted down by too many false dawns.

So dee-luded I will wait and see.

BUMP!

I remembered this post as it stood out from the throng at the time. I wondered if you've seen enough now Old Dee

Everyone bar the most steadfast (pig headed) Neeld supporters have seen enough. He simply has to go.

    DERAILMENT by KC from Casey

It wasn’t quite a trainwreck although at times, it sure looked like one, so I’ll settle for “derailment”.  The trip to Brighton Homes Arena in Springfield outside the back of Brisbane might not exactly be the same place where Homer Simpson’s family resides but, if you listened closely to the utterances of the Casey Demons fans both at the ground or watching via livestream, you could hear lots of groaning and plenty of expressions of “D'oh!” reverberating in the background, particular

TEN YEARS AFTER by Whispering Jack

Things have changed in the more than ten years since the West Coast Eagles decimated Melbourne by 93 points on the MCG early in the 2014 season. The two sides had not met at the home of football in the interim until yesterday when Melbourne won by a comfortable 54 points to remain in contention for this year’s finals series. Back in those days, the Demons were in the midst of their Great Depression but they have since tasted premiership glory and experienced a long enough period among

GAMEDAY: Rd 17 vs West Coast

It’s game day and the Demons return to Melbourne to play the Eagles at the MCG for the first time in over a decade. A win keeps the Dees finals hopes alive whereas a loss will almost certainly slam the finals window shut.

    CROSSROADS by The Oracle

Melbourne stands at the crossroads.  Sunday’s game against the West Coast Eagles who have not met the Demons at the MCG in more than ten years, is a make or break for the club’s finals aspirations.  That proposition is self-evident since every other team the club will be opposed to over the next eight weeks of footy is a prospective 2024 finalist. To add to this perspective is the fact that while the Demons are now in twelfth position on the AFL table, they are only a game and a half b

    DELUGE by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons overcame their inaccuracy and the wet inhospitable conditions to overrun the lowly Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval in Cramer Street, Preston on Saturday. It was an eerie feeling entering the ground that in the past hosted many VFA/VFL greats of the past including the legendary Roy Cazaly. The cold and drizzly rain and the sparse crowd were enough to make one want to escape to the nearby Preston Market and hang out there for the afternoon. In the event, the fans

    INSANITY by Whispering Jack

Somehow, the Melbourne Football Club managed it twice in the course of a week. Coach Simon Goodwin admitted it in his press conference after the loss against the Brisbane Lions in a game where his team held a four goal lead in the third term:   "In reality we went a bit safe. Big occasion, a lot of young players playing. We probably just went into our shell a bit. "There's a bit to unpack in that last quarter … whether we go into our shells a bit late in the game."   Well
