Another coaching rumour

Okay, yes, it's a more typical rumour of the 'I've heard' variety. But the man involved makes it all the more interesting.

Bomber wants back into a senior coaching gig.

(Related point - is it about time we just had a coaching megathread along the same lines of the TS megathread?)

Funny I've been wondering if it would be worth making some enquiries in that direction. He seems to be the forgotten man at the moment, playing a mentoring role with Hird but not being mentioned anywhere in the coaching options. It would be a huge coup if we could land him.

If he wanted a senior gig, he'd still be at Geelong.

He spent 10 years at Geelong and it was starting to turn sour with the Ablett issues. He might have gone around for one more year, but I don't know how well it would have functioned. I think he got out at a reasonable time. Obviously it's all speculation, but I don't think it's unreasonable to test the waters.

Guys getting paid more at Essendon to be an assistant that we'll offer him for the main gig. Not that money is an issue for him I believe.

However I just don't think he was plain burnt out last year, I think he genuinely had enough of the pressure and was happy to step away. He's always said he wasn't a career coach.

I'm sure we should approach him, but I think he's long odds to be remotely interested.

Interesting, he went on too long with the cats by a season or so, and has had a rest of sorts.

He looked like a pig Basking earlier in the Year but by Mid Season it looked like he and Hird saw things a little differently.

I wonder?

That's the extent of what I've heard. The year 'off' has done him good and he's raring to go again.

Probably to do with the MFC list being suited and playing the way he had Geelong set up (although nowhere near as well) too.

This may just be a more sophisticated rumour but...the account I heard was that at a corporate function last week he was asked if he would coach again and he replied that he had had his "gap year" and now Hird was off and running he was ready to coach again.

Our mob knows about this.

Bomber doesn't need a coaching gig, he needs some sleep........

I heard a rumour Scully is going because he and Bomber didn't talk all season

If that's the case & if it's true, that as your alluding to, that he's interested in MFC, then I wonder if the money splash talk has caught on his ear lobe??? I'e need some convincing that he's truly ready and wants to leave the Club he, well, slipped through to.

Bomber is overrated. I dont want him. People forget that he was at the Cats a long time, and supporters were calling for his head for years before he turned it around. Im not sure he is the right option for us. Not totally sold on his ability.

Bomber to coach again...This was mentioned on the 3AW rumor file on Monday - pure speculation and most likely no truth involved.

Next ...

It wouldn't surprise me to see James Hird step aside for Bomber Thompson.

Not interested in him.

Maybe that would be a good thing as you would think he now knows what he did wrong last time and will only take him half as long to get it right. (or maybe not)

I'm not sure I can agree with that. He took a long time to get them going because they were pretty messed up when he took over. He built that team from the ground up (along with his recruitment team). I don't know if any of their premiership players were at the club before he took over, but if they were it wouldn't be many. It takes time to put together a top side from scratch, something we forgot with DB. Bomber did that and when his gun recruits were hitting their prime the team exploded and won two flags. DB has already done the hard work on the Demons, collecting the young talented players and getting games into them. If Bomber took over it would be very much like when he'd already been with the cats 4-5 years.

Not to many premiership let alone dual premiership coaches would be "overrated". Bomber started at Cats in 2000, finals that season then missed finals 3 years in a row. Finals in 04, 05. Missed finals in 06 and had the "review".07 flag, 2nd in 08 and flag in 09... Looks pretty good comapred to ANYTHING we have had in the last 60+ seasons....

As an aside:

Scarlett drafted in 97. Wojcinski in 98. 99 was insane for them (in order): Corey, Spriggs, Bray, Foster, Chapman, Ling, Enright.

Barry Stoneham retired at the end of 2000... Mooney came to the club in 2000 from North. Josh Hunt and Max Rooke drafted in 2000.

2001 was another monster draft for them (in order): Bartel, James Kelly, Charlie Gardner, Steve Johnson, Garry Ablett (FS), Henry Playfair ....

Thanks to Footy wire for the details too.

Bomber would up & leave to take the Dons head coach job a nanosecond after it became available, no matter what stage of contract he was at.

Wayward kicking for goal, dump kicks inside 50 and some baffling umpiring all contributed to the Dees not getting out to an an early lead that may have impacted the result. At the end of the day the Demons were just not good enough and let the Hawks run away with their first win against the Demons in 7 years.

  • NON-MFC: Round 09

Round 9 kicks off out west with the Dockers hosting a Collingwood side resting several stars. Fremantle need to make a statement on their home deck after some disappointing form on the road, while the Magpies will be keen to maintain their Top 2 position. Friday night sees a must-win clash between two sides desperate to stay in touch with the eight. St Kilda have shown glimpses while Carlton are clinging to relevance after a flat start to the season. Saturday’s twilight game at Marvel pits the Bombers against a struggling Sydney outfit. Essendon can’t afford another close match against a lower-ranked side, while the Swans risk sliding down the ladder even further. Up in Darwin, the fourth-placed Suns will look to extend their stay in the top four. The Bulldogs have hit their stride with three big wins on the trot and will be very keen to consolidate on their momentum. The always fiery Showdown looms as pivotal for both clubs. Adelaide are eyeing a spot in the Top 4 with a win, while Port Adelaide’s season could slip away if they drop another game and fall further behind the pack. Sunday begins with a yawn fest between Richmond and West Coast. The Tigers need to bank the points to stay clear of the bottom two, while the Eagles are still chasing their first win of the year. The Giants face one of the league’s toughest road trips as they travel to GMHBA Stadium to face the Cats. With GWS at risk of a third straight loss, Geelong will be eager to consolidate their position inside the eight and start their climb up the ladder. The round wraps up with the top-of-the-table Lions heading to Ninja Stadium to take on the second-last Roos. The Lions should easily take care of the struggling Roos who might be powerless against the best in the comp. Who are you tipping and what are the best results for the Demons?
