Still disappointed from his side's meek exit from top-eight contention with a loss to St Kilda last weekend, North coach Brad Scott says his team needs polish added in the off-season to take the next step.

And he has promised the Kangaroos will be active in October's trade week to help achieve that aim.

"If we can add that polish, we're confident that 2012 is going to be a really exciting one for us," Scott said.

"You're always looking to improve your list.

"We sit ninth on the ladder at the moment and it's clearly not good enough.

"We'll be looking at anything we can to improve our list.

"We're going to be really aggressive, really ruthless to ensure that we improve from 2012 and beyond.

Well North have declared their intentions, it would be nice to see us adopt the same approach.

Do we really need to come out and declare it in the media though?

I'm happy if we simply approach trade week with that sort of intent.

+1 . Who knows we may have three quite handy draft picks, a surplus solid defender, a surplus ruckman, surplus mid sized/small forwards. We might end up holding quite a decent hand at the trading table. It sounds like there are already several clubs intending to trade Richmond, Nth Melbourne, Freo for starters so it will be interesting how it all unfolds.

That sounds good until you look at the names and talent:

Warnock, Spencer, Dunn, Bate, and Maric...

We have our big bodied key forward already.

With Gawn coming along nicely (see his recent game against Port Melbourne) Jamar is the man.

Or more to the point - a Jamar, Gawn, Martin rotation.

Before you say 'we can't play all three'....... Bollocks (I'll see you a Brown, Dawes, Cloke and Jolly)

We need an ablett like uncompromising tough nut inside player with a laser boot. His name is Dion Prestia and he will be a star!

Ok. Fire away....

Voted for the defender.

We've got Strauss who I'm 100% confident will make it, but I reckon we need another gun kick.

We've got key forwards in Watts, Cook, Fitzpatrick and Martin/Jamar/Gawn, small forwards in Maric and Wonaeamirri and inside midfielders in McKenzie, Moloney, Gysberts, Sylvia, Trengove and Scully. We lack that other defender.

Blease and Tapscott will both be more damaging pumping it inside 50 rather than out.

I'd go hard for Prestia if we can get him.

Wouldn't hold my breath though. Pretty sure he signed an extension just recently.

In the draft I reckon our best bet will be HBFers with pick 12.

There's a few around that mark that would be handy.

That way Grimes can slide into the midfield rotations.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
