Great. So what happens now?

Should we expect this to hurry up contract talks and what not?

- "Telstra will broadcast all matches including finals using the Telstra NextG service that can be viewed on mobile phones and iPads." Does this mean matches will be available on a standard broadband connection or just Telsta NextG?

Not sure but I suspect it will be similar to what Big pond do with V8 super cars now.

I.e. a live stream from the track if you use Big pond. might have to invest in a T box!

Now we know why players have been hanging out on signing contracts.

I would expect a rash of signings in the next few weeks.

Maybe news on Scully in the next couple!

The answer is yes as the footy will also be available to stream straight to your tv via TBox which operates on a broadband or wifi connection.

If you have a TBox everygame will be available live.

There is still the CBA to be thrashed out.

If many thought there was already saturation of AFL on TV etc, we ain't seen nothin yet.

The game just got bigger.

Loving the 9 games live on Foxtel!

No more crap like the Suns game having to watch a delayed coverage on channel 7!

And the return of a Fox Footy channel will be great.

So, are we ditching Telstra for our website?

More importantly, will I need to buy Foxtel? 4 games a week (with the rest on Foxtel) makes me think that we'll get Collingwood/Carlton/Hawthorn/Essendon repeatedly more often than not, and Foxtel will pick up us (i.e. the slack).

Will Tel$tra still be charging for us to watch games live?

Posted

Well, I am already planning to get Foxtel next year so I can access all 9 games live (and I know I can watch every Melbourne game live). Smart move by Foxtel, they will have a surge in subscriptions at the start of the 2012 footy season. At least 4 games (Friday night, Sat arvo, Sat night, Sunday arvo) will still be on 7 with 3 of those live (Sat arvo 90 minute delay in Vic).

They mentioned that there will be three games Sunday, one at 1.10pm, one at 3.15pm, and one at 4.30pm. How are Foxtel supposed to show all three of these games live? They will need at least two channels if they are indeed live due to the overlap.

From the article:

A typical round will feature one match on Friday night, five on Saturday - including a new twilight time slot - and three on Sunday; some of which have slightly new start times to previous seasons.

Match 1: Friday night 7.50pm EST, 8.40pm EST when played in WA or SA

Match 2: Saturday afternoon, 1.45pm EST

Match 3: Saturday afternoon, 2.10pm EST

Match 4: Saturday twilight, 4.10pm - 5.40pm EST

Match 5: Saturday night, 7.10pm - 7.40pm EST

Match 6: Saturday night, 7.10pm - 7.40pm EST

Match 7: Sunday early, 1.10pm EST

Match 8: Sunday afternoon, 3.15pm EST

Match 9: Sunday twilight, 4.40pm EST

AFL seals Broadcast deal !

Looks pretty good for fans across Australia. More live TV.

Only if you pay for it with Foxtel.

Its been a slow creep over the years and Foxtel are slowly but surely putting a strangle hold on free to air football. Sad but inevitable.

I dont have Foxtel at home and I am not intending to have it installed. I will have to go to the pub more and get mates to tape games for me.

Foxtel can have multiple channels on one channel via a digital select button. You choose which game you want to watch. They do this already for the premier league as well as tennis.

What I meant by more live TV - Friday night, Saturday night and Sunday afternoon games will be televised live on free-to-air. That's much better than current delayed telecasts.

PS. Getting to the pub more, could be considered a good thing for some :)

They did mention they adding additional channels to be able to run the required matches live.

I'm just glad I don't have to watch channel 7 for footy anymore from 2012.......they suck in my book!

Thanks for the heads up Great One and Real Demon.

Even if you don't have/get Foxtel, the deal is still probably better than what we have currently. At the moment, we get four games on free-to-air and four on Foxtel (in a typical round, we will exclude the 7 game rounds for this year).

Of the four games currently on free-to-air, they are all delayed by at least 30 minutes (I think Sat night on Chan 10 is the closest to live). From next year, you still get your four games in the same time slots (Friday night, sat arvo, sat night, sun arvo) with three being live. Thus, even if you do not get Foxtel, you are still in a better position. And, you know each game is live each week so you can always go to the pub to watch it. However, with Foxtel showing all games live, pubs will be forced to choose between matches that overlap...

Only conjecture so far but I've heard FOXFooty will be $18 a month.... That's not cheap for one channel. I'll get it but I'm not happy about it.

I checked the page before and the basic package is $44 per month and the Sports package is an additional $16 per month (this includes about 6 current sporting channels plus it should include the new Foxtel AFL). This means you will need to fork out about 60$ per month. This assumes you cannot just get the sports package. When I used to have Austar, you had to have the basic package at a minimum.

Samsara, with the original FoxFooty it was seperate to the original sports package from 02-06 or whenever it was. The only time it was free was when you already had the premium package. Given they just paid 750$ million I can guarantee you it will not be with the normal sport channel.

Previously I think the AFL channel was included if you have the sport package, but could also be selected on its own. Not definate on this if anyone else could confirm.

Thanks Demonland 7. Dohh!!

FFS, just bundle it with your bigpond, phone etc and threaten to jump ship and have it thrown in for free. Works for me everytime.

Foxtel Prices:

$60 a month if you want to watch the footy. +

If you are getting it for the first time there is installation which is about $100 up front.

OR

Do what I do. I had Foxtel/Austar for 2 months than I cancelled.

Than I got my parents to bring me there Foxtel box and I plugged it into mine.

So all they have to do is order another box which is $13 a month then all I have to pay is $13.

Been researching. Good news:

He said the AFL coverage will be included in Foxtel's standard sports package. He would not discuss pricing specifics but said there would be "no major uplift in price".

Fox Sports AFL, a dedicated AFL channel, will be available at no additional charge to sports-tier subscribers.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

A few new faces joined our veteran Demonland Trackwatchers on a beautiful morning out at Gosch's Paddock for another Preseason Training Session. Lever was also on restricted duties and appeared to be in runners.  The main group was doing end-to-end transition work in a simulated match situation. Ball mov

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
