WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - BILLY STRETCH

Featured Replies

Sorry. The most vivid memory I have of the 1988 Grand Final was Steven Stretch, in miles of space on a wing during the first Quarter, spill a simple mark because he heard Dippa's footsteps. It was soft beyond belief.

Stretch was a good running HBF who could take a good grab, he was not gutless as you suggesting.

Name of Drugs you are on please??

1988 Grand Final no less - squibbed against Dipper big time.

Short memories......

Yeah, because being carried off on a stretcher would have been the smartest thing to have done ...

You cant judge SS on one dropped mark .

'88 was a dog day afternoon .

They all squibbed it-and Hawks were a bigger ,stronger ,better side .

Stretcher was a top wingman/hbf with better kicking, running ability than 98 % of players running around today.

I think you guys left out the fact that SS was waiting for a hospital ball on the wing with Dipper coming from one side and Dermie from the other - which one of us would not have taken a step back?

You sound like Peter King, with a nugget. It could be something or it could be nothing..... maybe.

Careers are judged by performance in finals. And Stretch's career was definitely marked by that incident. Having said that I am reliably informed he was one of the first players picked every week. I liked him as a player.

But if you bother to read the threads above I was responding to this quote below which is simply untrue.

I would take him over Morton anyday because his skills were so much better - his physicality is probably about the same.

Yep, you can judge an entire career based on one day...

Honestly. If my 5 year old came up with this stuff, I'd be disappointed.

Agree, the similarities between Steven Stretch and Cale Morton in physical attributes and skills is very similar. But that's where it stops. Stretch whilst not the most aggressive or physical player, did not shirk contests or get intimidated by them, and this is where he reigns so much more supreme than Morton.

huh? Stretch didn't go near a pack in his whole career, more like Davey but not as quick, both beautiful left foot kicks.

Steven Stretch was a natural right footer but you'd have hardly known as he was near ambidextrous on his left.

It's rubbish that he didn't go near a pack his whole career.

This guy really doesn't deserve to be spoken of in the same breath as Aaron Davey or Cale Morton. He was in another class.

its funny how easily you forget

Only fond memories of stretcher

but boy seeing that video makes me think how well he compares to others of his vintage

clear eyed erudite and seems to have the coaching vernacular down pat

still has passion for Dees it would seem you could do worse for somone to review likely SA talent

While I am not necessarily happy with the notion of bagging Cale again - you cannot put Aaron in such a place simply on his last two years.

From 2004 to 2010 he was a fantastic contributor for this club and won a Bluey in 09, indeed he was a reason to go to the footy in 08 and 09.

Fair enough. I think the disappointment of his past two years has left a pall though over what he 'achieved' earlier in his career.

I don't think his 2010 was that great either to be honest.

I'd take Stretch over Davey at both their peaks.

Stretch won the B&F in the year we broke our 23 years finals drought and played over 150 games, yet the most vivid recollection you want to share about this former player on a thread dedicated to potentially drafting his Son is that one incident ?

Sorry. [censored] poster.

He must watch football differently to the rest of us.

......and the sons of past players shall lead them out of the darkness

Sounds like he has a good head on his shoulders which doesn't mean he will be the best footballer, but I have heard good things about the kid.

Gees he speaks well for a 15 year old, sounds like he has a good head on his shoulders.

Hopefully he develops into a player similar to his old man, if not better.

......and the sons of past players shall lead them out of the darkness

Avenge your father Billy!

........and it is written ,that Prince Jack of Vines and sir Billy the kid stretchmarks slay the evil Skull voldermort, in the 2015 grand final avenging their fathers , and restoring dignity and respect to the mighty and Victorious Melbourne football club.

So how exactly do we judge Robbie Flower's career then?

Typically off the mark.

TBM Bobby Skilton also apparently a dud?

Robbie Flower was just a front running showman in a great team who got carried for most of his career.

(Cue knives , guns, death threats ,lawyers ,car bombs from every direction).

  • REPORT: Carlton

I am now certain that the decline in fortunes of the Melbourne Football Club from a premiership power with the potential for more success to come in the future, started when the team ran out for their Round 9 match up against Carlton last year. After knocking over the Cats in a fierce contest the week before, the Demons looked uninterested at the start of play and gave the Blues a six goal start. They recovered to almost snatch victory but lost narrowly with a score of 11.10.76 to 12.5.77. Yesterday, they revisited the scene and provided their fans with a similar display of ineptitude early in the proceedings. Their attitude at the start was poor, given that the game was so winnable. Unsurprisingly, the resulting score was almost identical to that of last year and for the fourth time in succession, the club has lost a game against Carlton despite having more scoring opportunities.

  • CASEY: Carlton

The Casey Demons smashed the Carlton Reserves off the park at Casey Fields on Sunday to retain a hold on an end of season wild card place. It was a comprehensive 108 point victory in which the home side was dominant and several of its players stood out but, in spite of the positivity of such a display, we need to place an asterisk over the outcome which saw a net 100 point advantage to the combined scores in the two contests between Demons and Blues over the weekend.

  • POSTGAME: Carlton

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.
