I think everyone should be prepared to be somewhat disappointed immediately after the draft, when we realise we didn't pick the guy rated highly in the media, but it shouldn't be soon after that when everyone calms down and realises that Barry actually watches hundreds of hours of underage footy and knows what he's talking about... so the guy he picks is probably a future gem

Spot on........

I call that Gysbertia.

Yep, or Grimesia, Chipia, Bailia......

Alternatively both those stories could be true. I don't imagine Heppell or Darling would be confirming them. The most likely misinformation in those situations would be coming from the player to talk themselves up not the recruiter talking them down. Occam's Razor.

Entirely irrelevant, but I really hate people using Occam's Razor as a reason why something can't be true. Occam's Razor is not a hard and fast rule. It in no way disallows complex or convoluted notions, but merely suggests that these are less likely than simple ones. The number of times I've been involved with endless arguments with people who can only repeat variations of "Occam's Razor says that that's impossible!" is staggering.

OH, sorry. I thought you were drafting for need. If you want a tall forward and you take "best available tall forward" and he doesn't make it in preference to a good small that seems silly. But I must have misunderstood.

LUCAS COOK KEY FORWARD - THATS WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT - PEANUT!

For Old55 ...

Emma Quayle in today's Age:

This unique situation (The Suns number of picks) meant there were more mind games than usual being played in the days leading up to the draft, and even the final hours, when Essendon list manager Adrian Dodoro and coach James Hird were supposedly meeting to decide between Prestia and Atley with pick No. 8. The Bombers wanted Gold Coast to take a player they didn't want at No. 7, but the Suns wanted the Bombers to do the same thing at No. 8 so they could get the second one on their list with the No. 9 choice.

I'd say that's a home run with the bases loaded old boy.

Buy me some peanuts and crackerjacks ....

That's not the same as telling one kid he is the selection & even going as far as uploading a profile to the club website, then blaming it on hackers.

Essendon made no promises.

They only pretended the choice was between 2 guys.

They made the right decision for their club.

Dyson Heppell said recently that a number of clubs had been calling him to ask about his groins.

I reckon we dodged a bullet there ie I'm glad he didn't make it to 12. No doubt this kid can play against other kids. However, I've seen some very interesting extensive footage that puts many doubts in my mind that he is not worth a top 10-15 pick. Thank-you Essendon ... I'm not 100% convinced they did all the research as extensively as they should. I have a feeling that this was a late opportunistic pick ... good luck to them. B)

So you think that you have done better research than the Essendon football club on their first round pick? I'm sure that they have seen more than your extensive footage, may have even seen him live a few times.

No I think I can now see why he got to pick 8. I'm glad he didn't make it to 12. Oh yes ... and who had the footage has seen him play more than a "few times" ... maybe why he thought he was a somewhat "risky ballsey pick at 8" :) Its wasn't a "highlights package" and one you will never see on you-tube.

Pick 8 is a huge investment ... I wish the Bombers luck. Now dont get me wrong I'm not saying he wont be a good player. Just I'm glad we didn't have to invest our first pick on him. B) And Yes, I'm straight out suggesting that the Bombers might not have invested as much time as they would normally have done ... but thats only my allegation - one I'm positive they would never substantiate. IMHO the Bombers were marginally blindsided on this one.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
