50/50 then for Foles?

What is the actual issue with the Wentz injury Dappa?

Apparently the specific injury (back) will keep him restricted in the way he can move for a few months. Nothing to worry about long term, but for now he can't do what he needs to do. And likely can't for a playoff run.

The Browns v Ravens game is a beauty, tense finish coming up.

The Colts/Titans game to decide the winner in the tipping comp ... so after all that it is Clintosaurus vs DeeSpencer for the outright victory.

Leaderboard in the Comp (dark italics indicates final score)

  • 8 - Clintosaurus
  • 7 - Gorgoroth
  • 6 - DeeSpencer (Colts),  JV7,  layzie,  Dr.Gonzo,  titan_uranus
  • 5 - Dappa Dan (Colts)
  • 4 - Dee Zephyr (Colts),  Macca (Colts) Go the Biff
  • 3 - Demon Dave

Wowee, what a finish in the Browns-Ravens game.

Will be interesting to see what happens to the Steelers from here.

I hope the Browns build on this season for 2019.

Browns couldn't get it done so the Ravens win the AFC North.  That was an exciting finish to the season and we've still got the Colts/Titans game to follow.  Mariota not expected to play so the Colts are favoured.

Apparently if the Colts/Titans game ends in a tie then Pittsburgh gains the wild-card spot.  You just never know.

Oh man, a little a bit of faith in the kicker, around a 57 yarder was it for the Browns should they have attempted the FG?

Wow Eagles. What a wacky end to the year. I've never been in one of those where you're hoping for a win and other results to fall your way to make it. That was fun.

From here I'm bullish on Eagles vs Bears. Bears will be warm favourites but look out for the experienced team and QB.

Saints won't be stopped on the way to NFC Championship game though. It'll be Rams v Saints easy. And rightly so.

Love seeing Steelers miss out too.

Interesting call but a lot of these sorts of calls fall under the 'Unwritten Rule' category DZ.  Seen it happen before where the team with nothing to gain apart from the 'Win' endeavours to win by getting a TD rather than a 3 pointer.

Therefore,  I wasn't surprised by the call.  Their own fans might have wanted to try for the TD too (or at least get closer to the uprights and then go for the field goal if time is running out)

Schedule for next week (all times AEDT)

Sunday 8.35am  Colts/Titans @ Houston

Sunday 12.15pm  Seattle @ Dallas

Monday 5.00am  Chargers @ Baltimore

Monday 8.30am  Philadelphia @ Chicago

Browns could have run the ball at least once in the final drive. They had 2 timeouts I think.

Ironically the team you're up against in week 1 of the playoffs is the team that helped you get there.   Just hope that Foles gets up for the game as you're almost certainly going to need him up against the Chicago D.

If you do happen to win you'll be up against the Saints in week 2 I believe where as if Chicago win they will be up against the Rams in week 2.  But I've seen any number of teams win the whole thing after starting out in week 1 of the playoffs (including a number of wild-card teams)

Anyway,  keep us posted on the Eagles QB position if you can.

By the way,  Louis Riddick has been singing the praises of the Bears for at least the last month and on Friday he declared them as SB winners.  Defense does travel but the Bears are going to have to travel at least once on the road to get to the SB.  Probably twice.

And we have a winner in the tipping comp for the 2018 season!

Congratulations go out to @DeeSpencer  ... well played and well done!  DeeSpencer scored heavily in the 2nd half of the season and even missed a couple of weeks so is a worthy winner.

Hard luck to former winners in @Clintosaurus  & @Dappa Dan  in coming equal 2nd on points gained ... it came down to the very last game to decide things so the whole comp couldn't have been scripted better.

Another former winner in @Gorgoroth  shared 3rd place on points along with  @Dee Zephyr  and yours truly.

Commiserations go out to @JV7 & @Dr. Gonzo  who both led the Comp for a long period there and then both got passed in the last week.  That's tipping for you!  We might have to start calling you 'Schillaci' JV!

As for @layzie  @titan_uranus  @Go the Biff  & @DemonDave  - there's always the Post Season tipping comp for the 2nd chance!

But thanks to all for participating.  It's been a lot of fun for me this season with a dozen people involved and for a while there I thought we were going to have multiple winners.  But fair play to all in the way that you've participated - my task in running the comp has been made quite easy because of that.  Hope to see you all for the post season tipping comp!

Final Tally in the Tipping Comp

  • 9 - DeeSpencer
  • 8 - Clintosaurus,  Dappa Dan

Just can’t manage a silver!

Gratz to all the winners and again thanks for the effort of running it Macca!!!

Whilst I'm here ... had a bit of a small do-over of the post season tipping comp and came up with the following points system.  Remembering that straight winners (home or away) only are required and we've traditionally given scorelines as an add-on.

But whilst the scorelines haven't been needed previously,  I've incorporated the scorelines into the SB match so as to add some interest and to keep people interested.

Week 1 - For each winner - I point

Week 2 - For each winner - 1 point

Week 3 - For each winner - 2 points

SB -  Winner - 3 points plus ... an extra 2 points if the actual winning score (not margin) of the winning team falls within 3 points of your team's nominated winning score.

Example - Actual score ends up as Ravens 30 Seattle 28

If your scoreline had the Ravens winning and if the score you post up is anywhere from 27 - 33 points for the Ravens,  you'll be awarded 3 points for the win and 2 extra bonus points from the example provided.  n.b.  Your scoreline has to have the Ravens winning to qualify for the 2 bonus points.  The losing team's score in the SB is not relevant with regards to the possible bonus points available.

So it's fairly straight forward apart from SB week where you can gain a total of 5 points if your scoreline is on the money.  If we can get 4 or 5 starters or more,  we can go ahead with it.  And if you've got some thoughts on the post-season tipping comp,  feel free to express those thoughts.   Anyway,  here are the games for week 1

Schedule for next week (all times AEDT)

  • Sunday 8.35am     Colts @ Houston
  • Sunday 12.15pm  Seattle @ Dallas
  • Monday 5.00am    Chargers @ Baltimore
  • Monday 8.30am    Philadelphia @ Chicago

The Eagles into the finals you beauty! GO JOHNNO

Thanks again @Macca like I’ve said previous years it’s a great bit of fun the tipping comp! Always adds a little extra interest to the season!

Season has gone quickly once again, can’t believe we’re back into the post season already... FWIW I’m tipping a Saints/Cheifs SB with the Saints winning (as much as that hurts as a rival NFC south)

Latest is he's bruised but will play week 1. Has me worried though looking down the line and seeing Mack coming at you. Two weeks running he's taken heavy hits there.

Well done again on tipping fun Macca. Good to get back on the podium.

Cheers @Macca

I wouldn't have won without your generous weekly notifications. And to be honest working some Sunday evenings had me checking demonland late before bed and doing my tips as Shefty was announcing the injuries that worked in my favour.

Loving the wild card match ups this year, seems a really strong group of teams.

An early play off prediction - the AFC is underrated and the NFC is a bit overrated.

An early hope - Colts win so they go play the Chiefs, and the Ravens win and get the Pats match up.

Here's an interesting read from ESPN

Barnwell's 2018 lessons: What this NFL season means for 2019

And the lines for next weekend

Indianapolis @ Houston (-2.5)
Seattle @ Dallas (-2.5)
Chargers @ Baltimore (-2.5)
Philadelphia @ Chicago (-5.5)

Thanks Macca,

Would be interested in how the winning tally stacked up against previous seasons. Seems this year more than any a lot of short priced favourites got rolled, knocking us all for six. Was pretty slow going for all until the back end of the season.

Can't believe how quickly this one has gone !

I believe it's the lowest winning total GTB but in terms of degree of difficulty,  it's been off the charts this season so the winning total by DS needs to be looked at that way.

I think Clint set the high-score record last year of around about 14 or 15 points but I'd have to scroll back to check the other 4 seasons.  Previous to Clint's record the high-score might have been 12 or so.

One thing I do know is that the last week regularly delivers the 3 points to most of the participants ... but again,  the form is easier to read with teams resting players whilst other teams that have to win usually do so.  With the odd exception such as the Vikings against the Bears.

Colts 23  Houston 28

Seattle 21  Dallas 24

Chargers 22  Baltimore 27

Philadelphia 17  Chicago 20

  • GAMEDAY: Brisbane

It’s Game Day, and the Demons are back on the road with a massive challenge ahead — facing the reigning premiers, the Brisbane Lions, at their Gabba fortress. The Lions are licking their wounds after a shock draw in Tasmania last week, while Melbourne’s season hangs in the balance. Can the Dees defy the odds and pull off a miracle to keep their razor thin finals hopes alive?

  • NON-MFC: Round 10

The Sir Doug Nicholls Round kicks off in Darwin with a Top 4 clash between the Suns and the Hawks. On Friday night the Swans will be seeking to rebound from a challenging start to the season, while the Blues have the Top 8 in their sights after their sluggish start. Saturdays matches kick off with a blockbuster between the Collingwood and Kuwarna with the Magpies looking to maintain their strong form and the Crows aiming to make a statement on the road. The Power face a difficult task to revive their season against a resilient Cats side looking to make amends for their narrow loss last week. The Giants aim to reinforce their top-eight status, while the Dockers will be looking to break the travel hoodoo. The sole Saturday game is a critical matchup for both teams, as the Bulldogs strive to cemet their spot in the top six and the Bombers desperately want break into the 8. Sundays start with a bottom 3 clash between the Tigers and Kangaroos with both teams wanting to avoid the being in wooden spoon contention. The Round concludes with the Eagles still searching for their first win of the season, while the Saints look to keep their finals hopes alive with a crucial away victory. Who are you tipping and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • PREVIEW: Brisbane

And just like that, we’re Narrm again. Even though the annual AFL Sir Doug Nicholls Round which commemorates the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture to our game has been a welcome addition to our calendar for ten years, more lately it has been a portent of tough times ahead for we beleaguered Narrm supporters. Ever since the club broke through for its historic 2021 premiership, this has become a troubling time of the year for the club. For example, it all began when Melbourne rebranded itself as Narrm across the two rounds of the Sir Doug Nicholls Round to become the first club to adopt an Indigenous club name especially for the occasion. It won its first outing under the brand against lowly North Melbourne to go to 10 wins and no losses but not without a struggle or a major injury to  star winger Ed Langdon who broke his ribs and missed several weeks. In the following week, still as Narrm, the team’s 17 game winning streak came to an end at the hands of the Dockers. That came along with more injuries, a plague that remained with them for the remainder of the season until, beset by injuries, the Dees were eliminated from the finals in straight sets. It was even worse last year, when Narrm inexplicably lowered its colours in Perth to the Waalit Marawar Eagles. Oh, the shame of it all! At least this year, if there is a corner to turn around, it has to be in the direction of something better. To that end, I produced a special pre-game chant in the local Narrm language - “nam mi:wi winnamun katjil prolin ambi ngamar thamelin amb” which roughly translated is “every heart beats true for the red and the blue.” >y belief is that if all of the Narrm faithful recite it long enough, then it might prove to be the only way to beat the Brisbane Lions at the Gabba on Sunday. The Lions are coming off a disappointing draw at Marvel Stadium against a North Melbourne team that lacks the ability and know how to win games (except when playing Melbourne). Brisbane are, however, a different kettle of fish at home and have very few positional weaknesses. They are a midfield powerhouse, strong in defence and have plenty of forward options, particularly their small and medium sized players, to kick a winning score this week after the sting of last week’s below par performance.

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

There was a time during the current Melbourne cycle that goes back to before the premiership when the club was the toughest to beat in the fourth quarter. The Demons were not only hard to beat at any time but it was virtually impossible to get the better them when scores were close at three quarter time. It was only three or four years ago but they were fit, strong and resilient in body and mind. Sadly, those days are over. This has been the case since the club fell off its pedestal about 12 months ago after it beat Geelong and then lost to Carlton. In both instances, Melbourne put together strong, stirring final quarters, one that resulted in victory, the other, in defeat. Since then, the drop off has been dramatic to the point where it can neither pull off victory in close matches, nor can it even go down in defeat  gallantly.

  • CASEY: Footscray

At twenty-four minutes into the third term of the game between the Casey Demons and Footscray VFL at Whitten Oval, the visitors were coasting. They were winning all over the ground, had the ascendancy in the ruck battles and held a 26 point lead on a day perfect for football. What could go wrong? Everything. The Bulldogs moved into overdrive in the last five minutes of the term and booted three straight goals to reduce the margin to a highly retrievable eight points at the last break. Bouyed by that effort, their confidence was on a high level during the interval and they ran all over the despondent Demons and kicked another five goals to lead by a comfortable margin of four goals deep into the final term before Paddy Cross kicked a couple of too late goals for a despondent Casey. A testament to their lack of pressure in the latter stages of the game was the fact that Footscray’s last ten scoring shots were nine goals and one rushed behind. Things might have been different for the Demons who went into the game after last week’s bye with 12 AFL listed players. Blake Howes was held over for the AFL game but two others, Jack Billings and Taj Woewodin (not officially listed as injured) were also missing and they could have been handy at the end. Another mystery of the current VFL system.
